While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits.

Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

by Patrick Donohue, an Army combat veteran. Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

This non-profit offers veterans various weekly classes. Whether a veteran wants to sign up for one to heal, learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is a spot for them! Three outstanding high school student athletes, women’s basketball point and shooting guard Gemma Mendola from Babylon

High School and women’s softball players -- both from Lindenhurst High School -- Keelynn Kelly and Kaylin McDonald have signed letters

of intent to attend Suffolk County Community College next fall.

“By signing a letter of intent,” explained Suffolk

County Community College Athletics Director Neftali Collazo, “these student athletes are committing to Suffolk for the academic year, just as Suffolk is committing to these outstanding young ladies. We are committed to both their academic and athletic success and proud to call them Sharks!”

Lindenhurst High School’s Kaylin McDonald, a centerfielder, middle infield and utility player plans to major in liberal arts and general studies at Suffolk and said she is excited to continue playing softball and start her future. “I would love to maintain a 4.0 GPA and win an athletics award,” McDonald said.

Suffolk’s Emergency Medical technician program. Mendola said she plans to “excel both on and off the court.”

Uplifting Troops All Around The Globe • Service members can be called at a moment’s notice to leave their families and homes to respond to emergency situations – all amidst a global pandemic.

As troops work to save lives in moments of crisis, Mobile USO vehicles provide vital resources, support and comfort. These units also help serve the National Guard in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornados and more. Equipped with food preparation areas, WiFi, TVs, relaxation areas, gaming stations and outdoor activities, these USO centers on wheels are a welcoming haven for military members in hard-to-reach areas.

• Virtual and in-person entertainment reconnects service members to experiences and memories of home. Since April 2020, USO Military Virtual Programming (MVP) entertainment programs have hosted 135 sessions with more than 170 entertainers. MVP events reached 49 countries, including 22 ships at sea and 52 U.S. states and territories.

Attendees engaged with celebrities via live Q&A sessions, performances, one-on-one calls and more than 140 live “look-ins” at military locations.

• The USO Care Package Program provides service members with two different types of care packages: Snack Packs and Toiletry Packs. These care packages give busy troops a needed boost.
