WEST BABYLON LITTLE FREE LIBRARY INSTALLATION - On Thursday, November 3rd, Town of Babylon residents Jessica Cozzi, Jamie Cozzi, and Kaleigh Hannigan held an opening ceremony for their brand-new Little Free Library at Scott Park in West Babylon. The library was entirely community-funded, with the girls raising over $1,300 in under ten hours. Visitors can take a book that interests them and leave one of their own in its place, and readers of all ages are welcome to stop by! On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall along the New Jersey coast during a full moon and high tide cycle. These combining forces

led to a storm surge as high as eight feet in many of the south shore communities on Long Island. The Town of Babylon was heavily impacted by Hurricane Sandy’s harsh winds, flooding and lasting

effects, yet many first responders and residents courageously stepped up to combat the damage and aid those in need.

PSEG Long Island’s Power To Feed Long Island Initiative Collects

More Than 42,500 Meals To Help Local Families Struggling With Food Insecurity

PSEG Long Island recently announced that its 2022 Power to Feed Long Island initiative raised the equivalent of 42,616 meals – nearly 43% more than its 30,000meal goal – thanks to the generosity of Long Islanders. Joined by representatives from Island Harvest Food Bank and Stop & Shop, and by community volunteers who contributed to the initiative, the company made the announcement at Island Harvest’s headquarters in Melville.

“PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island initiative has brought out the best in our community and we are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of Long

Islanders,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO of PSEG Long Island. “With their help, we were able to collect 12,616 more meals than the lofty goal of 30,000 we set in June. This is a powerful affirmation of what Long Island is all about. Helping each other is just what we do. I am so proud of our employees who supported these events with their time, money and efforts.”

Breaking down the results, 14,897 pounds of food was collected at the six sites, along with $13,367 collected online and in cash donations and gift cards. The breakdown in each area is as follows:

“PSEG Long Island’s extraordinary efforts in exceeding the expectations of its second annual Power to Feed Long Island initiative is extremely gratifying,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “We are grateful for their ongoing commitment to helping improve the lives of our neighbors who face the daily challenge of not having enough to eat. We are also thankful to PSEG Long Island’s employee ambassadors, our partner Stop & Shop and the countless Long Islanders who donated to the PSEG Power to Feed Long Island food drive.”

Power to Feed Long Island was created by PSEG Long Island in 2021 to provide the public with venues where they live and work to donate food and personal care items to their neighbors. Food collection events were held at six Stop & Shop supermarkets in Massapequa, Riverhead, Smithtown, Carle Place, East Northport and West Babylon from July through September.

“Stop & Shop is proud to continue our ongoing support of the efforts of Island Harvest to address food insecurity across Long Island,” said Stefanie Shuman, community relations manager, Stop & Shop. “PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed

Long Island enabled our caring customers to take part in food drives held at Stop & Shop stores across Nassau and Suffolk by helping their neighbors in need. This program underscores that when we work together we can make a difference in assisting those combatting hunger and food insecurity.”

Summer is a difficult time of year for food banks, pantries and programs because vacations cause a decrease in donations and collection drives are not top of mind. It is also a time when children out of school are not receiving daily free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch, which puts a heavier burden on their families. Compounding the issue, the pandemic and the increased inflation rate have further strained local food programs and emergency feeding programs.

Several dozen PSEG Long Island employees participated in the food drives as Power to Feed Long Island ambassadors. They agree that safely getting back out into the community to help their neighbors was a rewarding experience.

Record Amount Of Donations Collected For Annual Pasta And Sauce Drive

Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta recently joined with the Sons of Italy Constantino Brumidi Lodge to host the 5th annual Pasta and Sauce Food Drive, which has become a yearly initiative to help collect items to benefit the Town of Babylon Food Pantry.

The 2022 Pasta and Sauce Drive received a record amount of donations with over 1,000lbs of pasta and hundreds of jars of sauce collected. Councilman Manetta was joined by

Gregory, Town Clerk Gerry Compitello, Receiver of Taxes Jennifer Montiglio and Department of Human Services Commissioner Traci Fonville to tally the donations and thank all who contributed.

“On behalf of the Town of Babylon, I would like to sincerely thank all of the businesses, organizations and residents who contributed to our most successful pasta and sauce driver yet,” said Councilman Manetta. “The Town of Babylon Food Pantry is an invaluable resource to our community

and I am grateful to all who have helped keep their shelves stocked,” he added.

Councilman Manetta would also like to extend a special thank you to the West Babylon Lions Club, Constantino Brumidi Lodge, Roomers, Belfast Gastropub, Reed Taylor Beauty, West Babylon Public Library, Greybarn, Positions Dance Studio, the Village of Babylon, Strega Rose Tattoo Arts, and the Bay Village Civic Association, all of which contributed to making this year’s drive a success.

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

Since Veterans Day occurs in November, our Charity of the Month is one of Suffolk County’s foremost advocates for the interests of our veterans, the Ronkonkoma-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide range of support services to Suffolk County veterans by connecting them with affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, case management, financial and legal referrals, employment assistance programs, and food pantries to help combat food insecurity.

This article in particular focuses on one important component of MHAW’s veteran services, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Named to honor the memory of an Iraq War hero and Army medic from Mt. Sinai who lost his battle with PTSD, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer initiative offered in collaboration with the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

The Dwyer Project serves veterans, service members, and their families with such post-service transitional issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury, although a formal diagnosis is not required for participation. They offer weekly peer groups both in person and virtual, and they also host monthly in-person community resource activities as well as a bi-monthly senior veteran group.

The Dwyer Project’s trained “Veteran Peer Mentors” have served in various branches of the Armed Forces and understand the reintegration needs of those who have been in the military, regardless of era or branch of service. This Project accepts all veterans, no matter their discharge status. All group sessions are confidential and anonymous in a safe, and trusting environment, free of judgment.

“Peer specialists are critical allies for our veterans,” says Colleen Merlo, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. “They understand what other veterans are going through and can offer

support, advice, and suggestions to enhance recovery-oriented care.”

As described by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, peer support workers are “people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.”

It is a true power to have this type of communication,” said one a local veteran that is involved with The Dwyer Project.

“My facilitators are fantastic in organizing programs and ideas for how to help each other. The group is fundamental to what we need. When you get veterans together and get them talking, they can work out their issues. This is one of the most important programs for veterans I have ever seen.”

The Dwyer Project’s free, confidential, peer-to-peer approach has attracted support from both veterans and mental health professionals statewide. In fact, this year’s state budget includes funding for this Project in all 62 counties. Additionally, a national veteran peer initiative is pending in Congress, and it all started here in Suffolk County.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Board of Education of the West Babylon Union Free School District, in the County of Suffolk, New York, has adopted a resolution on September 28, 2022, authorizing a Special District Meeting of the qualified voters of said School District to be held on

Tuesday, December 6, 2022 between the hours of 7:00 o’clock A.M. (Prevailing Time) and 9:00 o’clock P.M. (Prevailing Time), at the following voting places: (1) Board Room of the Administrative Wing of the Senior High School, 10 Farmingdale Road, West Babylon, New York, for those persons residing in Election District No. 1 and (2) Santapogue Elementary School, 1130 Herzel Boulevard, West Babylon, New York, for those persons residing in Election District No. 2; for the purpose of voting upon the following Bond Proposition:

(a) That the Board of Education of the West Babylon Union Free School District, in the County of Suffolk, New York (the “School District”), is hereby authorized to (i) reconstruct and/or replace the roof at the West Babylon Senior High School, at the estimated maximum cost of $7,450,000 and (ii) replace the water service line and condensate tank; construct driveway, parking lot, drainage, asphalt, pavement, curb, lighting and sidewalk improvements; reconstruct the west playground and install new basketball hoops at South Bay Elementary School, at the estimated maximum cost of $2,250,000 (collectively, the “Project”), substantially as described in a plan prepared by BBS Architects, Landscape Architects, and Engineers, PC, Patchogue, New York (the “Plan”), which Plan is on file and available for public inspection at the office of the District Clerk; all of the foregoing to include all original equipment, furnishings, machinery, apparatus and ancillary or related site, demolition and other work required in connection therewith; and to expend therefor, including preliminary

costs and costs incidental thereto and to the financing thereof, an amount not to exceed the estimated total cost of $9,700,000; provided that the estimated costs of the components of the Project as set forth in the Plan may be reallocated among such components if the Board of Education shall determine that such reallocation is in the best interests of the School District;

(b) that a tax is hereby voted therefor in the amount of not to exceed $9,700,000 to finance such cost, such tax to be levied and collected in installments in such years and in such amounts as shall be determined by said Board of Education; and

(c) that in anticipation of said tax, the Board of Education may authorize the issuance of bonds of the School District in the principal amount of not to exceed $9,700,000 and a tax is hereby voted to pay the interest on said bonds as the same shall become due and payable.

Such Bond Proposition shall appear on the ballot used for voting at said Special District Meeting in substantially the following abbreviated form:

AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that personal registration of voters is required and no person shall be entitled to vote at said Special District Meeting to be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 whose name does not already appear on the register of said School District, or who does not register as hereinafter provided, except as may otherwise be provided by the Laws or Regulations of the State of New York. AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that applications for absentee ballots may be applied for at the office of the District Clerk, Administrative Offices, 10 Farmingdale Road, West Babylon, New York beginning November 1, 2022 between the hours of 8:00 o’clock A.M. (Prevailing Time) and 4:00 o’clock P.M. (Prevailing Time), Monday through Friday, except holidays in accordance with Section 2018-a of the Education Law. A list of all persons to whom absentee ballots shall have been issued will be available for inspection by qualified voters of the School District in said office of the District Clerk during regular business hours on each of the five (5) days prior to the day of the Special District Meeting, except Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, between the hours of 8:00 o’clock A.M. and 4:00 o’clock P.M. (Prevailing Time)

and shall be available at the polling places on the day of the vote. Any qualified voter may, upon examination of such list, file a written challenge of the qualifications as a voter of any person whose name appears on such list, stating the reasons for such challenge. Any such challenge shall be transmitted by the District Clerk or a designee of the Board of Education to the inspectors of election on Election Day during all hours of voting and registration. Military ballot applications received in accordance with the foregoing will be processed in the same manner as a non-military ballot application under Section 2018 of the Education Law. The application for a military ballot should include the military voter’s preference for receipt of the military ballot by mail, fax or e-mail.

to the Office of the District Clerk, Central Administration Building, 10 Farmingdale Road, West Babylon, New York 11704. (c) que, en anticipación a dicho impuesto, la Junta de Educación puede autorizar la emisión de bonos del Distrito Escolar por un monto principal que no exceda los $9,700,000 y por la presente se vota un impuesto para pagar los intereses de dichos bonos a medida que éstos venzan y sean pagaderos. Dicha propuesta de bonos aparecerá en la boleta electoral utilizada para la votación en dicha reunión especial del distrito en forma sustancialmente abreviada:

RESUELTO:

La votación se llevará a cabo mediante el uso de máquinas de votación o boletas de papel según lo dispuesto en la Ley de Educación y las urnas permanecerán abiertas entre las 7:00 a.m. (hora prevaleciente) y las 9:00 p.m. (hora prevaleciente) y todo el tiempo que sea necesario para que los votantes presentes puedan emitir su voto.

Y SE NOTIFICA POR LA PRESENTE, que se requiere la inscripción personal de los votantes y ninguna persona tendrá derecho a votar en dicha Junta Especial del Distrito que se realizará el martes 6 de diciembre de 2022 cuyo nombre no figure ya en el registro de dicho Distrito Escolar, o que no se inscriba como se dispone a continuación, salvo que las Leyes o Reglamentos del Estado de Nueva York dispongan lo contrario.
