Northwell Direct, NYPD Announce Finest Care: Free, Confidential Counseling For Police Officers

Northwell Direct and The New York Police Department recently announced a new collaboration that will connect the 36,000 uniformed Members

of Service with free, confidential counseling and other mental health services. Finest Care enables officers to call a confidential Northwell Health behavioral health

access and navigation center to be assessed and linked to Northwell’s expansive network of psychologists and psychiatrists through the Northwell Direct provider network*. Northwell Direct is owned by Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider and private employer.

“Northwell Direct is honored to be able to provide New York’s Finest with the highestquality mental health services available,” said Nick Stefanizzi, CEO of Northwell Direct. “By providing a confidential and easy-to-use navigation service, we’re breaking down barriers and changing how behavioral health is accessed. With Finest Care, the dedicated public servants of the NYPD will be immediately connected to the help they need by making a simple phone call.”

The 24/7/365-day-a-week call center will be available

for all uniformed Members of Service and all calls will be received and triaged by trained nurses and masterlevel therapists. If a Member of Service is experiencing an acute crisis, the nurse or therapist will be able to arrange for an appropriate and immediate medical response, including the dispatch of an ambulance or access to emergency tele-psychiatry services.

“We are excited to be able to increase police officer access to Northwell’s stellar behavioral therapy teams, and wide choice of venues, helping us provide Finest Care, everywhere,” said Eli Kleinman, MD, MPH, NYPD chief surgeon.

“Finest Care through Northwell Direct is an excellent resource for NYPD, said Lokesh Reddy, MD, NYPD deputy chief surgeon. “Our police officers will have more access to exceptional mental health services.”

“To best serve our women and men police officers,

the NYPD is dedicated to ensuring the continuity of all aspects of our proactive and comprehensive wellness program,” said Dr. Adria Adams, the director of the NYPD’s Health and Wellness Section. “And our collaboration with Northwell Direct is integral to that important work. It ensures there is no interruption in accessing immediate mental health care, outside of the department, on an ongoing basis, in a comprehensive manner, and with a health partner that offers a large footprint of service facilities throughout our region. We know this continuation of the Finest Care program will meet our officers’ needs with the thoughtfulness and confidentiality they require.”

Appointments with a psychologist or psychiatrist for comprehensive evaluation and counseling will be available within 48 hours of the call for urgent issues. In-person or

virtual visits will be offered to accommodate personal preference and schedule.

“Mental health disorders are among the most common illnesses in our communities, and they can have a severe impact on functioning and quality of life,” said Manish Sapra, MD, executive director of the behavioral health service line at Northwell Health. “Police officers face unique stressors not seen in the general public. We are confident this program will help reduce stigma associated with seeking and accepting help.”

Members of Service can be seen at Northwell Health facilities located in: Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Manhasset, Bay Shore, Port Jefferson, Glen Oaks, and Ossining.

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

On Friday, November 11, Long Islanders join all Americans to mark Veterans Day, a day to honor those who’ve served our country and protected our freedoms.

In this spirit, our Charity of the Month for November is one of Long Island’s leading advocates for the interests of our veterans, the Ronkonkoma-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

While MHAW serves all residents in Suffolk County by offering comprehensive services and advocacy that focus on mental health as well as overall health and wellness, the organization places a major focus on assisting Suffolk County’s veteran population.

MHAW provides a high-level of support for our community’s veterans regarding affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, reintegration skills, and other necessary supportive services. MHAW truly serves a surprisingly large number of veterans. Home to more than 800,000 veterans, New York State has the fifth-highest veteran population of any state nationwide, and some 72,000 veterans reside in Suffolk County, the most of any county in the Empire State. Indeed, that Suffolk County figure is 18 percent higher than the number for Erie County, which ranks number two.

Sadly, our country’s veteran population, which includes our local veterans, face substantial mental health challenges.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, the rate of major depression among military veterans is five times as high as

that of civilians, and the rate of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is nearly 15 times higher.

Left untreated, these invisible wounds can have devastating effects on veterans and their families. According to the RAND Center, a non-profit, public policy, research organization, people affected with depression, PTSD, and traumatic brain injury can exhibit higher rates of other unhealthy behaviors, higher rates of physical health issues, and higher rates of suicide than those who are not affected.

MHAW tackles these challenges facing veterans in several strategic ways. In future columns this month, we’ll explore four of their standout initiatives: One significant component of MHAW’s veterans services is the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project, named after an Army medic from Mt. Sinai who succumbed to PTSD upon his return from Iraq. A second element is MHAW’s work in providing permanent housing with support services to veterans. A third program is called Supportive Services for Veteran Families, which functions in partnership with EOC of Suffolk, Inc. And a fourth component are MHAW’s food pantries and its efforts to battle food insecurity

Babylon Elementary School Welcomes New Principal

The Babylon Union Free School District has hired Thomas Keogh to be principal of Babylon Elementary School. Mr. Keogh previously served as assistant principal at Birchwood Intermediate School in the South Huntington Union Free School District.

Mr. Keogh said he approaches his role by making school a place where children are excited to go, similar to a place like Disney World. “When the children come to school, I want them to feel that same excitement,” he said. “I want to make it an environment where staff, students and parents work as a team and where everyone is excited about education and lifelong learning.”

Mr. Keogh received his master’s in elementary education from Adelphi University and advanced graduate certificates in educational technology and educational leadership from Stony Brook University. Mr. Keogh initially worked in human resources before moving to education as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher in 1997 at Maplewood Intermediate School, where he spent the bulk of his career. “I had always wanted to be a teacher, and I realized I had to do what made me happy,” he said. “So, I made the switch, and I have not looked back since.”

While at Maplewood, Mr. Keogh said he sought to learn more about the education field and was increasingly finding himself instructing other teachers in various capacities, whether it was through giving presentations at superintendent’s conference day or helping at the South Huntington teacher center. While earning his certificate in

educational technology at Stony Brook, the college brought him on as an adjunct professor in the field.

Moving into more of a leadership role suited him. “When you’re in a leadership position, you get to really form your own bonds with other teachers and share your ideas and expertise,” Mr. Keogh said. “I started to realize the impact I could have as a building principal.”

In 2018, Mr. Keogh was made assistant principal at Birchwood before coming to the Babylon UFSD, where he said he has already received a warm welcome. “This is such a wonderful district to raise your children,” he said. “It has that small town feel to it, and staff here is always telling me how wonderful a place it is.”

As a member of the League of Women Voters (LWV), a 102 year old nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, this is my “busy season.” With my LWV colleagues, all volunteers, I speak to groups, answer countless questions, organize and moderate debates, and write articles; all as outreach during election season. Additionally, we encourage all citizens to vote responsibly in every election in which they are eligible, whether that be fire districts, libraries, school districts, local, state or federal. Your vote is your voice and I urge you to use it this Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th. Below is some significant information to keep in mind:

• Be sure you are registered to vote prior to heading to the polls.

• Because of redistricting, mandated by the US Constitution after the (2020) census, some of your district numbers may have changed! You can find your polling place easily on the NYS Board of Elections (BOE) website at www.voterlookup. elections.ny.gov. If you don’t have access to the internet, go to your local public library, where you can find assistance to get on one of their computers. Your information is private.

• You may have applied for an absentee ballot. If you plan to vote this way, the same website allows you to track your ballot to be sure it’s been received and will be counted by your county’s BOE. With a new tracking system now in place, if you have applied for an absentee ballot, but you decide you’d rather vote in person, you will not be able to cast your vote in a machine during early voting or on Election Day. Instead, you’ll be given an “affidavit ballot” and the BOE will check your records

• This year you’ll be voting for your local member of the House of Representatives, one US Senator, NYS Governor and Lt. Governor and your local member of the NYS Senate and NYS Assembly. In Suffolk County, you’ll also vote for County Comptroller and County Clerk. There may be some local races on the ballot too.

• There is a NYS Environmental Bond proposition on the back of your ballot. If approved, this would allow the NYS Comptroller to issue and sell $4.2million in bonds to be used to fund environmental protection, natural restoration, resiliency, and clean energy projects. This is not a tax, investors buy NYS bonds.

• Suffolk County also has a countywide proposition clarifying the wording of the term limits law and four Suffolk townships have local propositions too. Nassau does not have a county proposition on this year’s ballot.

Please plan ahead; learn about the candidates and know what’s on your ballot. You can visit www.vote411. org, enter your address (no need for your name or personal info) and you will see the offices, candidates, and propositions that will be on the ballot. All candidates were sent questions and given the opportunity to answer them on the site; sometimes candidates refuse to respond, this is indicated.

No one ever should be too busy, too disinterested or even too frustrated to vote. Your vote is your hard-earned right, but also your obligation as an American citizen.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Kicks-Off Annual Mags & Munchies Program

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) is proud to announce that their annual Mags & Munchies Fall Product Program is now open and will run through November 16, 2022. The Mags & Munchies program is a financial literacy program where Girl Scouts sell various products, including magazines, and delicious nuts, snacks, and chocolates. The program presents Girl Scouts with an opportunity to give back to their communities—while providing girls with entrepreneurial, goalsetting, and decisionmaking skills in preparation for the start of the Girl Scout cookie season.

“We are incredibly excited for this year’s Mags & Munchies program,” said Tammy Severino, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, President and CEO. “Through this program, Girl Scouts will learn invaluable entrepreneurial, digital marketing, and e-commerce skills. The program provides girls with new opportunities to learn important business skills while still having fun!”

Products can be ordered in person

from a Girl Scout or picked up at local community locations during the Booth Sale season. Girl Scouts can also share a link to their personalized shop, where customers can choose to have products shipped right to their homes. Girls will build an online shop, create an avatar that looks just like them, and record a message for their virtual likeness to deliver to friends and family. There are also many other ways for girls to engage in the program, including uploading their own personal videos, earning virtual rewards for their avatars, and tracking their progress.

This year, customers will have a variety of new snack options.

Buyers can select healthy assortments, including the Cranberry Trail mix, which includes cranberries, raisins, almonds, banana chips, walnuts, and cashews; or sweet treats like the Peppermint Bark Rounds or Mint Chocolate Trefoils. Each Girl Scout can accept orders through their digital store in addition to taking paper orders. Customers can also

subscribe to hundreds of magazines or renew current subscriptions to benefit their favorite through their Girl Scout and her troop.

In addition, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County continue to support Long Island Cares as part of its ongoing efforts to support Long Islanders facing food insecurity. Those looking to support can purchase products through Care to Share, and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County will donate products to those in need.
