Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings.

(b) that a tax is hereby voted therefor in the amount of not to exceed $9,700,000 to finance such cost, such tax to be levied and collected in installments in such years and in such amounts as shall be determined by said Board of Education; and

(c) that in anticipation of said tax, the Board of Education may authorize the issuance of bonds of the School District in the principal amount of not to exceed $9,700,000 and a tax is hereby voted to pay the interest on said bonds as the same shall become due and payable.

Babylon Encouraging Donations To Assist Puerto Rico And Florida In Wake Of Hurricanes Fiona And Ian

The images emerging from the State of Florida in recent days and Puerto Rico in recent weeks are heartbreaking. As a shoreline community that has experienced devastation caused by Mother Nature, our hearts are with the people of Puerto Rico and Florida as are our thoughts and prayers. We will soon mark the 10 year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy devastating our community. In the wake of Sandy, Babylon received immense support through all sorts of donations.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the Babylon Town Board are encouraging residents to show Puerto Ricans and Floridians the same generosity we were shown

10 years ago through monetary donations to private funds set up to support those affected by both storms.

PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is a disaster relief fund that has been focused on rebuilding Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017. Following Hurricane Fiona’s impact on the island, the organization is collecting money for short and long-term humanitarian needs.

The PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is organized in partnership with the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico, a 501(c)(3) tax deductible corporation.

The Florida Disaster Relief Fund. The Florida Disaster Relief Fund is the state’s official private fund established to assist

Floridians in response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Ian. Donations to the fund are made through the Volunteer Florida Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible charity organization. State officials have announced that the disaster relief fund is the best way to help Floridians who are struggling in the wake of Ian.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

On The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank, The Museum Of American Armor Seeks Those Who Crewed These Legendary Vehicles

On the 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe during

World War II, the Museum of American Armor is seeking to honor those veterans who crewed these legendary

vehicles along their families.

The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank

families to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary on Thursday, November 10th at 12 Noon, on the eve of Veterans Day 2022.

“Sadly, we recognize that many of the Sherman tank crews are gone but their legacy is lasting. The invitation is out to all surviving Sherman tankers but we are also asking the families of Sherman veterans to join us in ceremonies that mark the 80th anniversary of when this iconic tank was introduced into combat,” stated Kevin Carroll, the Armor Museum’s Community Affairs Director.

Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us. The Sherman tank is an important part of that

story and so we are asking tanker veterans or their survivors to come forward and help us preserve their legacy.”

In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he undertook the creation of the museum. “You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational display,” observed Mr. Kadish.

Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different manufacturers during World War II, making them available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German opponents, the Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively fast, and

produced in great numbers. As combat evolved during the conflict American tankers changes their tactics to confront and defeat the enemy’s superior armor.

Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the globe. But to put that in perspective, we need to hear from our Sherman veterans and their families as we pay tribute to a weapon that was manned by brave Americans nearly a century ago.”

Assemblyman Durso & Drug Free Long Island To Hold A Free Narcan Training In Babylon Village

Assemblyman Michael Durso and Drug Free Long Island (DFLI), in partnership with the Village of Babylon, Suffolk County Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey, Senator Phil Boyle, and Senator Alexis Weik, will be holding a free Narcan Training on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the Babylon Public Library.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. The training will include an opiate informational

presentation, overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, and administration of Naloxone (Narcan). Each registered participant will receive a free Narcan kit at the completion of the training.

West Babylon BOE Adopts Bond Resolution Community Vote Planned For Tuesday, Dec. 6

During the Sept. 28 meeting of the West Babylon Board of Education, the board adopted a resolution to submit a bond proposition to the voters of the district on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

The proposed projects focus on necessary safety capital repairs at West Babylon Senior High School and South Bay Elementary School. At a cost not to exceed $9.7 million, the following projects, if approved by voters, would be seen through completion:

• Full replacement of the West Babylon Senior High School roof.

• Water service line and condensate tank replacement as well as subsequent driveway reconstruction at South Bay Elementary School.

• Reconstruction of South Bay Elementary School parking lot, including additional parking, paving, upgraded draining, curbing, sidewalks and lighting.

• Reconstruction and replacement of asphalt in the west area of the back field, including replacement and added drainage

Babylon High School senior running back Nathaniel Griffith broke three separate records during the varsity football game against Smithtown High School West on Oct. 1. Griffith made history during the homecoming game, breaking the North Babylon High School, Suffolk County and Long Island single game rushing yards record with 38 carries, 489 yards and seven touchdowns. In addition, the North Babylon varsity football team broke the previous school scoring record in their win by putting up 75 points. Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park), in partnership with Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP Suffolk) and the New York State Office of the Aging, recently held a free Medicare 101 Seminar at the West Babylon Public Library.

A trained Health

Insurance Information and Counseling Program (HIICAP) coordinator from RSVP Suffolk covered the basics of Medicare, including Parts A, B ,C & D; Medicare Savings Program, Extra Help, and EPIC. The program also reviewed upcoming changes ahead of the Annual Open

Councilman McSweeney Officiates Wedding Before Couple Relocated Overseas

Town of Babylon Councilman, Terence McSweeney received a phone call from a longtime neighbor and friend to officiate the marriage before the couple moved overseas to Austria. Brad & Megan McGuire wanted their families to witness the matrimony before Megan & Brad moved overseas. McSweeney, who became a marriage officiant in September of 2018, was overwhelmed with pride that his long-time neighbor thought of him to be a part of their special day. “Growing up on our street in North Babylon, our neighbors were more like family. We did a lot together, from barbecues, block parties, graduation parties, and holidays. We all considered each other a part of our extended families,” said Councilman McSweeney.

Megan was fortunate enough to be offered a position with the International Atomic Energy Agency overseas in Vienna Austria. Her then fiancé Brad was pursuing a degree in Marine Science at Stony Brook University and had to remain in the U.S. while

completing his fieldwork. They had gotten engaged in April before Megan had to leave for Vienna and decided to have an intimate wedding ceremony at the end of the summer at Overlook Beach. Brad will join her in Vienna

after being apart for four months.

Megan and Brad are incredibly grateful for Councilman Terry McSweeney’s help coordinating and officiating their special day.
