Dr. Heather Zinkin, a radiation oncologist at Northwell Health in Huntington, will provide important information to empower patients to take hold of their health. Topics to be discussed include health screenings, prevention, vaccines, and more.

Dr. Heather Zinkin has a special interest in integrative medicine, patient wellness and nutrition. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from NYU School of Medicine and performed her medical internship

at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed a residency in radiation oncology at a combined program at Tufts and Brown University and served as chief resident. She then returned to her hometown where she has been practicing for the past 15 years and was appointed Chief of Radiation Medicine at Huntington Hospital. She has given many survivorship lectures both in hospital and community settings including active participation in the Northwell Wellness Center. She has also served on various physician panels for community education and holds certificates in Nutrition from Cornell University.

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations.

NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time,

What Is Yom Kippur?

Yom Kippur is an annual holiday in the Jewish faith. Considered the holiest day in Judaism, Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement. According to History. com, Yom Kippur marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe. Those 10 days represent a period of introspection and repentance. On Yom Kippur, faithful Jews are asked to make amends and seek forgiveness for sins committed during the previous 12 months. Yom Kippur has many traditions, including a roughly 25hour period of fasting and prayer. Jews believe that God judges all people’s fate for the coming year during the 10 Days of Awe, which begins with the Jewish New Year celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Due to the significance of Yom Kippur, Jews refrain from working on the holiday. That includes high-profile professional athletes. In fact, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax, a practicing Jew, famously refused to pitch in Game One of the 1965 World Series because the game was scheduled to take place on Yom Kippur. Religious services on Yom Kippur bear such significance that some congregations seek additional space to accommodate all worshippers. While the 25-hour fast is a significant component of the holiday, some people are exempt from fasting. Women who have recently given birth, the sick, and the elderly are allowed to eat during Yom Kippur. Those who observe the fast do so because it is believed to cleanse the body and spirit. As significant as the fast is, food still plays an essential role in Yom Kippur observations. For instance, feasts on the eve of Yom Kippur tend to be plentiful, so people who will fast can gather strength for the holiday. In addition, once the fast has ended, another festive meal takes place. Yom Kippur begins sunset of Sunday, September 24, 2023. Ends nightfall of Monday, September 25, 2023.

PSEG Long Island Provides Long Island Cares With Nearly $30,000

PSEG Long Island commends Long Island Cares, Inc. – the Harry Chapin Food Bank’s commitment to the environment for installing an electric vehicle (EV) charging station at its Hauppauge headquarters.

The food bank received rebates of $29,313 for installing a workplace electric vehicle charger with two ports, which will help it save money so it can support more families in need. The charger will power the organization’s growing EV fleet of vans and trucks, and allow employees and visitors to charge their EVs for free.

“PSEG Long Island applauds Long Island Cares for installing an EV charging station and purchasing EVs to replace some of its gas-powered vehicles,” said Michael Voltz, director of Energy Efficiency and Renewables, PSEG Long Island. “These measures will help support

the environment and also save the organization money. Hopefully it can also serve as a model for other organizations. We’re happy to support this wonderful philanthropic organization in more ways that help them provide food for our neighbors in need.”

With fewer volunteers coming through the door, one population is stepping in to take up the slack – specialneeds individuals. As part

of their day, many specialneeds individuals perform a range of tasks for not-forprofits that help to keep the doors open and the milk of

human kindness flowing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was

at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception.

Special-needs individuals step in to do the most basic tasks to more intricate things such as data entry, interacting with donors and computer and office tasks.

“Our clients make the decision about which organizations they’d like to volunteer with,” says Christina Abbinanti of Life’s WORC in Garden City. She said that clients participate as part of the Program Without Walls that allows special-needs individuals to integrate into the community. The clients volunteer at a range of organizations throughout the week. “They also learn valuable job and interpersonal skills.”

At Hair We Share on Long Island, special-needs volunteers keep the doors

open and allow the allvolunteer organization to continue to provide free, hand-laced wigs to medical patients. The wigs, which average $4,000 each, are custom fitted to patients.

“Volunteers are our life blood,” says co-founder Dean Riskin. “We have no paid staff. We have seventyfive-thousand ponytails we are sitting on that need to be sorted, weighed and bagged and we couldn’t do it without them.”

In addition to getting a warm feeling about helping, special-needs volunteers hone important work and

social skills that help them when they apply for jobs.

Lung Association Launches First LUNG FORCE Walk

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths on Long Island –and throughout the U.S. In an effort to end lung cancer, the American Lung Association is launching its first ever LUNG

FORCE Walk Long Island at Eisenhower Park on October 7, 2023

LUNG FORCE initiative unites those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers to stand together against lung

cancer. LUNG FORCE Walks happen all around the county as celebratory and welcoming events that provides critical funds for lifesaving lung cancer research, early detection initiatives and awareness.

Babylon High School Ranked Among Nation’s Top High Schools

The Babylon Union Free School District is proud to announce that Babylon Junior-Senior High School has been recognized among the nation’s 1,000 best public high schools, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual list for 2023. The ranking placed the school at 93rd in New York State and 846 in the nation among 17,680 public high schools. Babylon High School school was one of only seven schools in Suffolk

County to make the list.

“This is a great accomplishment for our high school and one that our community should be proud of,” said Superintendent of Schools Carisa Manza. “Congratulations to not only Principal Al Cirone and his staff, but to all of Babylon’s educators and support staff members who provide expert guidance to our students throughout their time in our schools.”

Babylon High School

holds a total enrollment of 442 students with a 10:1 student-teacher ratio, a 97 percent graduation rate and a 68 percent AP participation rate. The top schools are ranked methodically using different measures of student success such as college preparedness, math and reading proficiency and performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate.

The New York City Walk, which took place in May, saw more than 1,000 people participate, raising over $275,000.

Nicole Sturiano, a resident of Ridge, New York and captain of Team Jeanine has helped raise over $50,000 and has participated in the New York City LUNG FORCE Walk since its inception in 2015. She said, “My sister, Jeanine, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at only 42 years old. After just two years of fighting the toughest battle of her life, Jeanine passed away on December 1, 2015. Our team has been walking to carry on the legacy of my sister, to advance the effort to find a cure, and to bring

awareness to lung cancer. I hope one day to see a world free of lung cancer so that no one has to suffer the way my sister did, and no one has to lose their loved one to lung cancer.”

The LUNG FORCE Walk is great for friends, family and company teams to come together to support people with lung disease and lung cancer, have fun and get some great exercise. To be eligible for recognition, students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 assessment scores that are within the top 10% of assessment takers in each state for each

award program or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP exams in ninth and 10th grade.
