Babylon High School Named A School Of Distinction
Prestigious Athletic Award Was Given To Only 20 High Schools In Suffolk County For 2022-2023
Babylon JuniorSenior High School has been named a School of Distinction for the 2022-2023 school year by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). This prestigious award is given only to schools in which all of their varsity sports teams have achieved NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Team status throughout the course of the school year. Babylon was one of only 20 high schools in Suffolk County to be named a School of Distinction, and one of only 35 across the Island.
“This recognition is a testament to our student athletes’ dedication both on the field and in the classroom,” said Babylon Athletic Director Michael De Joseph. “Congratulations to our students, coaches, and staff for this great accomplishment.”

Towards the end of each sports season, the NYSPHSAA honors varsity teams that have excelled both athletically and academically as Scholar Athlete teams. The NYSPHSAA specifically awards varsity teams that collectively earn a grade point average of 90 percent or higher during the season. Babylon High School had all 24 of its teams achieve Scholar Athlete status throughout all three seasons for 2022-2023.
“This is another reminder of the Babylon School District’s excellent record both academically and athletically,” said Superintendent of Schools Carisa Manza. “Our student athletes worked so hard throughout the year, and we are so happy that their collective efforts are being recognized.”

On Friday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island summer food collection drive comes to West Babylon.
Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity. PSEG Long Island is giving out reusable shopping bags and LED lightbulbs as a thank you.
With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative. Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there

Babylon Cares Coalition, recently held a School Supply Drive at West Babylon High School. Approximately 200 backpacks full of supplies
were handed out to local students to kickstart a successful school year.

Babylon Youths Take 3rd Place In Annual Battle Of The Books
Babylon Public Library youths take 3rd place in Suffolk County’s annual Battle of the Books competition!
Every summer, Suffolk County libraries gather with teams of young adult players (entering grades 6-9) to test their trivia mettle on six selected books. Each library team reads the same six books
during the summer with a culmination trivia challenge in August. On August 12, thirty Suffolk County libraries met at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge to participate in the Battle of the Books.

Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon
Lightning Warriors, a not-for-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York.
This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.
“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.
All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and post-race refreshments.
Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more selfesteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”
Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.
