Seniors Acknowledged During Ceremony

On the evening of June 8, West Babylon Senior High School honored and recognized members of the Class of 2023 with scholarships and awards for

their achievements both in and out of the classroom during the school’s annual Senior Awards Night.   West Babylon Senior High School Principal Stephen

O’Leary welcomed the soonto-be graduates and their families. He congratulated the seniors for their dedication in the classroom, their community and to

giving back. Seniors received scholarships and awards from members of the West Babylon community. In addition, seniors were

awarded scholarships from organizations outside the West Babylon community. Each student was called to the stage one by one to receive one of

many community awards, memorial scholarships and academic excellence honors.

More Than 100 New Members

Welcomed Into West Babylon NJHS

Joined by family, friends and administrators, West Babylon Junior High School welcomed its newest members into the National Junior Honor Society in a ceremony held in the school’s auditorium on May 24.

National Junior Honor Society adviser Ms. Limperatos welcomed guests to the ceremony and recognized the importance of their hard work and dedication to their school

Principal Dr. Carlos Falcon echoed those sentiments and commended the students on their character and commitment to their academic journey.

Current National Junior Honor Society officers spoke about the five pillars of the organization and their importance: character, scholarship, leadership, service and citizenship. The officers lit a candle to

symbolize the pillars. Each of the 120 new inductees was called to the stage to be recognized and presented with a certificate by Dr. Falcon. West Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly administered the oath of induction to the newest members, who pledged to uphold the standards and principles of the National Junior Honor Society.

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a lifeaffirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10 , from 7 pm to 8 pm.

Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree it’s about time they had a holiday to remember… and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.

The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

Downey Receives Top Female Scholar-Athlete Honors

West Babylon High School senior Lacey Downey has been named the recipient of the Butch Dellecave Award as Suffolk County’s top female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Throughout her career in West Babylon, the senior-athlete has been recognized for her performance on fields and courts more than any other student-athlete in Long Island history, collecting eight Newsday All-Long Island selections in girls lacrosse, girls basketball and field hockey.

The Dellecave Award recognizes a studentathlete not only for performance on the field

but also in the classroom, community service and outside activities. The 23rd annual awards were presented at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on June 11.

“To win this award is a superb feeling,” Downey said. “Look at the other [nominees]: people who are going to Navy, people who are joining the Army, people who work in the neonatal [unit] at a hospital. It’s a surreal feeling to have been chosen among all those incredible people.”

Downey will be attending Boston College in the fall and will play lacrosse while pursuing an engineering degree. “

Grief Healing Workshop Series

Pinelawn Memorial Park, in collaboration with COPE Foundation, offers a free, monthly online grief healing workshop series to help families on their journey of grief after a loved one has passed.

interactive discussion about food and grief, sharing her personal story, recipe ideas, advice, and observations about the connections we form through food.
