Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind.

I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. A TOWER OF TOOTHPICKS - West Babylon Junior High School students in Heidi Birr’s class were tasked with creating a tower out of toothpicks and minimarshmallows as part of a makerspace activity in the library. The tower design needed to be strong enough to hold several bookmarks and a paint pallet. The tallest structure was 6.5 inches and held the bookmark. Saving the Gingerbread Man District participated in a hands-on STEM lesson during their FLEX library period on May 22nd.

Students were tasked with creating a bridge to bring the gingerbread man safely home and away from the hungry fox. Students used straws, toothpicks, pipe cleaners and Q-Tips and created their own gingerbread man to test their creations.

BROADWAY COMES TO BABYLON: The Argyle Theatre

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut.

Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre.

Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick

off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. As the show opens with the song named in tribute, Runyonland, the lights come up on a truly entertaining evening of song and dance.

In this production, the Argyle has built a true gem. With the stage filled with thousands of light bulbs, the only thing that shines brighter than the scenery - which mimics the streets of old Broadway - are the performances of their professional actors pulled fresh from the streets of NEW Broadway.

Getting to this point was no mean feat for the Perlman family, who have put several millions of dollars and countless late-evening hours into the project. But if you talk to them, their passion for and commitment to the performing arts is infectious, which no doubt contributed to their ability to surround themselves with a hardworking team of

I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. Accomplished Staff Members During the May 7th Babylon School District Board of Education meeting, two Babylon School District staff members were celebrated by the community for both their accomplishments and for their commitment to enhancing education for students.

Babylon Elementary School first-grade teacher Yanirez Rodriguez was presented with a certificate courtesy of the Board of Education for being recognized by Sen. Phil Boyle as a “Teacher of Excellence” at his annual Teacher of Excellence Awards Dinner.

Ms. Rodriguez has been with the district for more than 10 years and is credited with being involved in multiple district committees, and greatly assisting with English as a New Language students

in her native Spanish language in an effort to build confidence among students.

“She is always championing the finest instructional practices to advance student growth,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi.

“She makes sure that the students meet their benchmarks as firstgrade learners, and, more importantly, she really knows how to make that connection with parents and families of the students that she has in her class.”

Additionally, former Babylon Junior-Senior High School football coach Hans Wiederkehr was recognized for being inducted into the 2018 Suffolk County Sports Athletic Hall of Fame.

During his time as coach from 1988-2002, the

football team reached the playoffs 12 times and won nine league titles. Mr. Wiederkehr committed 32 years of his life to the Babylon School District working multiple educational buildings.

While in district, he served such roles as physical education teacher, district director of interscholastic athletics, physical education and health and as an administrative assistant at Babylon Memorial Grade School.

He will be retiring this year.

“Hans has done amazing work as both a teacher and a football coach on Long Island,” said Mrs. Rozzi.

“You’re not just retiring from Babylon, but you’re going on to wonderful things too, and just know that we valued all the times you’ve been teaching here.”

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services.

They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries!

The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden!

This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Its mission is to establish positive and supportive mentor relationships with a statewide, school-based, unique one-to-one Mentoring Program that aims to reduce the number of students dropping out of school. They leverage the resources of communities, schools and businesses to match youth with volunteer mentors who are screened and trained. As the NYS Mentoring Program wraps up the 2017-2018 school year, they are starting to work on their Fall programs. They are searching for compassionate mentors to work with the students they serve here on Long Island. Coca-Cola Scholar West Babylon Senior High School student Eric Donohue has been named a 2018 Coca-Cola Scholar.

Each year, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation awards 150 scholars with a $20,000 scholarship to be used toward postsecondary education.

This year, 150,000 applicants applied for the 150 scholarships.

After the initial application, the applicant pool reduces to about 2,000 students, then the next round of applications advance 250 students to an interview process in which the 150 scholars are selected.

Scholars attended a leadership weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, in April, where they participated in

leadership development training, and visited attractions in Atlanta, including the World of Coca-Cola Museum.

Heading to Finals After making it through the first round of judging, four West Babylon Senior High School actors and actresses will be competing in the final round of the 2018 Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance, the New York Chapter of the Jimmy Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards.

Fifty students from across

New York were chosen for the final round of competition.

The district congratulates the following students: David Grant (Chairman); Mackenzie Grimes (Princess Puffer); Danielle Del Orfano (Rosa Bud); and Amanda Riche (Edwin Drood).

The four students will be competing based on their performances in the high

school’s musical, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.”

The students will be coached with industry professionals at a studio in New York City on May 19th.

Following this, a live stream of their culminating performance and announcement of winners will be found on Facebook. One female and one male will be named as winners.

However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet.

For veterans who have been honorable discharged from the military the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veterans discharge papers for proof of service. This being done and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased.

The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is open the entire casket may be draped with the flag.

2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket may be draped with a properly folded flag.

3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket.

4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open and only the stars are to show when the flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket.

5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag.
