Town Of Babylon Honors Local Student For Service To Veterans

The Town of Babylon recently honored 10-year-old West Babylon resident Tyler Sullo for his exceptional service to veterans in the community. Tyler, the student body president of Forest Avenue Elementary School, declared helping local veterans to be a part of his electoral platform. Inspired

by his veteran grandparents and those in his community, he fulfilled this goal through his organization of a heartwarming dinner to benefit veterans.

“In West Babylon, we are lucky to have great people like Tyler who make up our community to help all of our organizations run,” said

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “That is what living in the Town of Babylon is all about.”

Tyler organized a free February 13 dinner for veterans that not only provided a delicious meal of spaghetti and meatballs but a sense of togetherness and gratitude near Valentine’s

Day and $1,000 raised for American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon as well. Tyler and his family coordinated with over two dozen local businesses to secure items for 29 raffled-off gift baskets, and funds were also raised through a 50/50 raffle. American Legion Post 1634 was incredibly grateful for the funds, which will help

maintain the building and its services to veterans, including crucial veterans support groups.

In a ceremony, the Town of Babylon Board presented Tyler with a certificate of appreciation, and American Legion Post 1634 bestowed him with an outstanding service award. “It goes without saying that this is

a tremendous thing to do, particularly for someone of his age,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “As a veteran, I am grateful to Tyler for recognizing the need to help our veterans and the incredible impact he can have.”

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

free Narcan Training on Thursday, May 4, 2023 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Babylon Village Hall - Board Room, 153 W Main Street, Babylon.

A trained specialist from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s office will discuss signs of an opiate overdose, overdose risk factors, recognizing

and responding to an overdose, and the administration of Naloxone (Narcan). Each registered participant will receive a free Narcan kit at the completion of the training.

33rd Annual Judged Art Show

The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), with the Town of Babylon, presents its 33rd Annual Judged Art Show from May 15 through June 13, 2023 at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street, Babylon, NY 11702. The show is open to all Long Island and Metro Area artists in the following categories: Oils, Acrylics, Watercolors, Drawing (Pencil, Pen, Marker, Colored Pencil), Charcoal & Pastels, Mixed Media, Digital, Photography, and Sculpture. There are also two student categories, Grades 5-8 and Grades 9-12.

A Call to Artists has been issued inviting all Long Island and Metro artists to register and submit up to 3 current works not previously exhibited in a BACCA show. All registered artists will have at least one piece accepted. The registration deadline is Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 11:59PM.Registration information, the submission form, and the payment form are available on the BACCA website at www.babylonarts.org/ judged-art-show. Women’s History Month Program

Ceremony & Reception will take place at Old Town Hall on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 from 6PM to 8PM, and the public is invited to attend.

The Judged Art Show will be on view Monday through Friday, May15th to June 13th from 10AM to 4PM, and on Saturday, May 20th from 10AM to 1PM, at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village. This unique building is on the national Register of Historic Places and provides a beautiful setting for BACCA’s 33rd Judged Art Show.

Diego Garcia will be this year’s Art Show Judge. Long Island born and raised, self-taught painter Diego Garcia has had a natural passion for art since childhood. Diego began his artistic journey by finding inspiration in popular icons like Michael Jackson and Walt Disney. The graffiti culture and honors art classes at Brentwood High School catalyzed Diego’s talents at a very young age. He started to take his craft seriously around age 17 with commission work and local group exhibitions. Since 2015, the artist has had six successful solo gallery exhibitions, alongside many group

and highlighted artist showcases, from Long Island to Chelsea, NY.

work has had a significant impact, on her students and the community at large. Diane taught life lessons, in addition to dance fundamentals, such as discipline, time management, selfconfidence, and teamwork. Her former students feel grateful for the lessons she

taught and they have carried those lessons forward as teachers and mentors to others.

Apply Now For West Babylon’s 2023-2024 UPK Program

Applications to enter the West Babylon School District’s Universal Prekindergarten program lottery for the 202324 school year are now open. The Universal Prekindergarten program will be funded by a New York State grant. The UPK program will be run by SCOPE and will be housed out of select elementary schools. Parents must provide transportation to and from the program.

To be eligible, the child must be a resident of the West Babylon School District and must turn 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2023. Applicants will be selected by a lottery to attend this full day program. To participate in

this lottery, ALL completed forms and required documentation must be submitted via email to Central Registration at WBregistration@ wbschools.org or hand delivered to Central Administration Registration Office, 10 Farmingdale Road, West Babylon, NY 11704 or fax to (631) 376-7019 by 4:00 PM on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.

Applications for West Babylon School District’s 2023-24 Universal Prekindergarten program lottery can be found on the district’s website, www. wbschools.org.

The lottery will take place virtually on Friday, May 12, 2023, at 10 a.m.

The Zoom link for the lottery will be posted on our website. At this time, the district does not have the exact number of spots available. The district is waiting for finalized numbers from New York State.

Residents who are accepted into the program will need to complete additional documents required by SCOPE.
