of her proposed bill, New York Senate Bill S5424. The bill will revoke the driver’s license of anyone convicted of a BWI, a meaningful step in maintaining the safety of our waterways. Boating safety advocate Gina Lieneck
also discussed Brianna’s Law. Taking effect in 2025, Brianna’s Law will require every boat operator to complete a state-approved boating safety course. The law, passed in 2019, is named after Lieneck’s daughter,
Brianna Lieneck, who was tragically killed in a boating crash in the Great South Bay in 2005. The Town has frequently collaborated with Lieneck on boating safety initiatives, including Operation Dry Water.

Pet Partners Looking For Some Special Animals
April
30 Is National Therapy Animal Day: Consider Volunteering With Your Pet
It’s no secret animals can have a positive impact on a person’s mental and physical health. That’s why every year thousands of facilities such as libraries, schools, hospitals, assisted living, and more ask Pet Partners volunteers to bring therapy animals to visit and provide comfort to their students, residents, patients, and customers. This April 30 is a special day to recognize the beneficial role therapy dogs and other therapy animals, in partnership with their human companions, play in creating happier, healthier communities.
Unfortunately, there’s a shortage of therapy animal teams in the United States. Pet Partners is the nation’s leading registry of therapy animals, and their volunteer teams can’t fulfill all the requests they receive for therapy animal visits. The need for therapy animals has never been greater to provide comfort and support, especially after the impacts of the pandemic, economic uncertainty, and social discord in recent years.
The good news is that a wide variety of species can be therapy animals, not
just dogs. Cats, equines, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mini pigs, birds, and even llamas and alpacas are eligible for registration through the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program, which makes more than three million visits a year.
“An animal’s temperament is what determines whether they might make a good registered therapy animal with Pet Partners, not any specific species or breed,” said Pet Partners President and CEO C. Annie Peters. “Many of our therapy animals are rescue pets, and they assist everyone from veterans with PTSD, seniors living with Alzheimer’s, students with literacy challenges, patients in recovery, and people with intellectual disabilities. We couldn’t be more grateful for all that our volunteer therapy teams do for people in need around the world.”
Therapy animals have a special aptitude for interacting with members of the public and enjoy doing so. Therapy animal handlers have a strong trust-based bond with their pet and facilitate interactions that benefit

all involved. The handleranimal pair takes part in an extensive evaluation process to make sure they will be successful with people in a variety of circumstances.
We have experts available to talk about the value therapy animals bring to communities, what behaviors a pet should exhibit, how the process works and more. We also have therapy animal handlers all across the United States who would love to talk about the joys of volunteering with their pets.
Pet Partners is also specifically seeking more cats and handlers to become registered volunteer teams. In partnership with Cat Person, a cat care brand, a research study on the Cat Human Bond found that cats can provide a special form of comfort that dogs cannot. Special incentives are also being offered for new cat teams.

GIRLS TRACK EXCELS AT NATIONALS - From March 8-10, the West Babylon girls varsity track team competed at the nationals in Boston and New York City. Niomi Allison, Ja’Nasia Johnson, Alejandra Garcia, Camila Garcia and Sophia DiCiero all represented West Babylon at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in Boston and at the Nike Nationals in New York City. Camila Garcia was named an All-American at the New Balance Nationals in the 1-mile race walk. She is a five-year member of the West Babylon varsity team, and three-year captain. She took on race walk as a freshman and immediately excelled. She has consistently been ranked high in Suffolk County in this event. Photos courtesy of West Babylon School District

Dispite the blustery cool morning many attended and anxiously awaited as the festivities commenced at 10:00 a.m. when “Patty Cottontail” was accompanied by Mayor Mary Adams as they commenced the Easter Bunny Parade around Argyle Lake as some donned Easter Bonnets.
Patty Cottontail stopped to high-five a young bunny eared bystander.
All participated in the festivities, family and friends.
Girlfriends gathering to meet Patty Cottontail, the cool thing to do!
Afterward, Patty Cottontail took photos with the picturesque background of Argyle Lake with all that joined the parade. By this time, Patty Cottontail was hungry and needed a nap.
On Saturday, March 30, 2024, the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce joined forces with the Village of Babylon’s Easter Bunny Parade around Argyle Park, Bunny Photos, and an Easter Egg Hunt that took place in the Downtown Babylon Village Business District.

On The Record To Save Local Reporting
Senator Martinez Joins Effort To Provide Tax Assistance To Preserve Community Journalism And Jobs
Journalists who have been looking for something good to report on may soon be able to turn the lens on themselves as the New York State Senate advances tax credits to local news outlets for the employment of community-oriented news journalists in its One-House budget proposal.
If included in the 2024 New York State budget, the Local Journalism Sustainability Act, sponsored by Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and co-sponsored by Senator Monica R. Martinez, would provide news organizations with a 50% refundable tax credit against the first $50,000 of each newsroom employee’s salary, up to $200,000 per outlet. This benefit would be limited to print and online newspapers and broadcasters with 100 employees or fewer that cover local community news.
“Local journalists tell the stories of America’s
communities,” said Senator Martinez. “They highlight the achievements of our neighbors, the successes of our school teams, and the efforts of our public officials. Unfortunately, with the contraction of local media over the past decade, these stories are being lost, and in their absence, misunderstanding and mistrust have taken hold. These narratives unite us, and without them, we will continue to drift further apart.”
According to a study issued by the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University, an average of 2.5 local newspapers per week ceased operations in 2023. This has resulted in over half of all U.S. counties now having limited access to reliable local news, and more than 200 counties are considered “news deserts.” In New York State, that decline has been even more pronounced, with 190 weekly newspapers closing down since 2004 in this, the media capital of the world.
on March 20, 2024 in Albany.
Pew Research Center findings also support this trend, with its reporting stating that the share of U.S. adults following the news closely has been in decline, resulting in shrinking audiences for several older types of news media, such as local TV stations, most newspapers, and public radio.
The 2024 New York State budget plan, which may include the Senate’s recommended inclusion of this credit, is due by April 1st.

A Brief History Of Earth Day
Earth Day is celebrated each April and draws attention to a range of issues affecting the environment. Earth Day aims to raise awareness in the hope of inspiring change. Earth Day is observed on April 22. According to
National Geographic, the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson was inspired to begin a national celebration uniting the environmental movement after witnessing environmental activism

in the 1960s. With the help of Denis Hayes, a graduate student at Harvard University, Nelson organized the first Earth Day. Twenty million people participated in events across the United States and strengthened support for environmental legislation like the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act.
Earth Day was expanded to a global initiative in 1990 under guidance from Hayes. Nearly 200 million participants in more than 140 countries now join together to protect the planet. Awareness continues to be raised each year regarding renewable energy and climate change.
One of the hallmarks of Earth Day celebrations is the planting of trees. Researchers estimate roughly 15 billion trees are cut down each year across the globe. By planting a tree every Earth Day, people can make a difference. Trees absorb carbon dioxide release oxygen and bolster ecosystems for wildlife. Shade trees can reduce reliance on fans and air conditioning systems.
The main message of Earth Day 2024 is the need to commit to ending reliance on plastics, says EarthDay.org. The goal is a 60 percent reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040. Plastics are bad for the environment a growing body of research indicates they have an adverse effect on the major systems of the body, including immune, respiratory, digestive, and hormonal systems.
Everyone can do their part to promote the ideals behind Earth Day. For 54 years, millions of people have been advocating for change to benefit the planet and human and animal health, and that fight is ongoing.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May.
Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 13th Legislative Pet Food Drive where muchneeded pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously donated to this annual drive.
All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and

cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets.
Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code requirements, all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. For more information or to make an appointment to donate outside of these hours, call (631) 8544433.
“Hard times impact all members of the
family, including our animal companions,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Families shouldn’t have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their beloved pets. I am happy to partner with Long Island cares again on this important and much needed cause.”
