Essential Project Expected To Be Completed Over The Next Few Weeks

The Town of Babylon is pleased to announce that a shoreline stabilization capital improvement project is currently underway at Tanner Park in Copiague. Spearheaded by Deputy Supervisor and Parks Chairman, Tony Martinez, the project aims to safeguard the coastline.

The scope of work involves the construction of approximately 386 linear feet of rock revetment, installation of approximately 412 feet of coir logs, and backfilling and planting with native vegetation. This comprehensive approach not only fortifies the shoreline

but also contributes to the preservation of local ecology.

erosion issues exacerbated by events like recent coastal storms, we are ensuring the long-term resilience of our waterfront areas.”

The necessity for this project arose from the erosion that began to undermine the shoreline, particularly evident after Hurricane Sandy. This

erosion also impacted the entrance to the Howell Creek canal near Tanner Park Marina. With Suffolk County’s dredging of the channel in 2022, the urgency to stabilize the area became paramount to prevent further erosion and protect vital infrastructure within Tanner Park.

The Town of Babylon remains committed to proactive measures that prioritize environmental sustainability and community resilience along our south shore.

Completion of the Tanner Park shoreline stabilization project is anticipated in the next few weeks.

Applications to enter the West Babylon School District’s Universal Prekindergarten program lottery for the 202324 school year are now open. The Universal Prekindergarten program will be funded by a New York State grant, run by SCOPE and housed at Forest Avenue, John F. Kennedy, Santapogue and Tooker Avenue elementary schools. Parents must provide transportation to and from the program.

To be eligible, your child must turn 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2024. Applicants will be selected by a lottery to attend this full day program. In order to participate in this lottery, ALL completed

forms and required documentation must be submitted via email to Central Registration at WBregistration@ wbschools.org or hand delivered to Central Administration Registration Office, 10 Farmingdale Road, West Babylon, NY 11704 or fax to (631) 376-7019 by 4:00 PM on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

The lottery will

West Babylon Names New Guidance Director

West Babylon School District has appointed Laurie Mitchell as director of guidance K-12 effective Feb. 1. She replaced Gina Curcio.

Ms. Mitchell previously served as director of guidance K-12 in the Lynbrook Public School District since 2019. Prior to that, she was the guidance chairperson for grades 6-12 and a school counselor in the Lynbrook Public School District since 1999.

Ms. Mitchell holds both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in business administration from Dowling College. In addition, she has a master’s degree in school counseling from LIU Post. She also holds certifications in school administrator/supervisor and school district

Town Of Babylon Boosts Local Business Cybersecurity

Councilman Anthony Manetta Hosts Event To Assist Local Small Businesses And Not-For-Profit Organizations

Anthony Manetta recently hosted an event to enhance the cybersecurity of local small businesses and notfor-profit organizations.

The Town of Babylon was joined by U.S. Congressman Andrew Garbarino, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, President of LISTnet Paul Trapani and Department of Homeland Security and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) cybersecurity advisor Stan Lyzak to convey this crucial information to protect the finances and information of local businesses and organizations and their customers.

“Cybersecurity is a pressing issue,” said Councilman Manetta. “Small businesses and not-

for-profit organizations— cornerstones of our community—are often left vulnerable to cyberattacks and can be irreparably damaged by them if they do not take the necessary steps ahead of time. Our event provided these local entities with valuable training, resources, tips and strategies to help them safeguard against cyber threats.”

The Town of Babylon’s

event bridged the cybersecurity gap small businesses and not-forprofits often experience due to a lack of resources and attention. Congressman Garbarino stressed to attendees the importance of cybersecurity, and District Attorney Tierney explained the legal system’s role in combating cybercrime.

Paul Trapani and Stan Lyzak provided practical

knowledge and actionable steps for those in attendance to protect their businesses’ and organizations’ valuable data, finances and reputations from hackers.

“The victim pool is widening,” said Paul Trapani. “Initially, large businesses were targeted because they have deep pockets, but many of these hacking tools are now automated. Someone can run scripts

and find vulnerabilities and, unfortunately, target businesses of all sizes.”

The Town of Babylon’s cybersecurity event worked to combat these news cybercrime trends and provide small businesses and not-for-profit organizations with the resources, training and attention they require to continue thriving and serving the community.
