Call To Artists: The Art of Carnaval

BACCA (Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts), Harper Bella, and Jose Tutiven - the Artists Create Change project and partnership through CRNY - invite artists to participate in “The Art of Carnaval,” the opening event of an ongoing project celebrating art forms that are part of global carnival festivals. Five artists will be chosen to have their work displayed at the BACCA Arts Center, 149 N. Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst, NY, at the opening event and celebration on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 and in the Arts Center display window from February 21st through March 31, 2023. The jurors will also present a virtual exhibition of works curated from the entries received (in addition to the five selected for the opening event), which will be available to view from February 22nd through May 1, 2023.

The deadline to submit work is Sunday, February 5, 2023 at 11:59PM EST. There is no entry fee; submissions are free to all. The jurors are Harper Bella and Jose Tutiven. For entry information visit https:// www.babylonarts.org/artof-carnaval .

Carnival (Carnaval in Spanish, Portugese, and French-speaking countries; Carnevale in Italy; Fasnacht in Switzerland); Karnawal in Poland; and Karneval in Croatia and Germany), is the festivity that takes place in many countries around the world during the last days and hours before the Lenten season. Carnival originated as a non-religious festival in ancient Egypt to mark the end of winter and welcome spring.

The counseling team at Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District is developing new initiatives and helping students achieve those goals this school year.

New for this school year, the counselors have launched a respect/ responsibility/relationship program. The 3Rs program uses common language to connect students and staff.

any of these expectations set forth by the program. They can turn in one pawprint for a reward or save up 10 and get a pair of cozy pajamas. The initiative sets a schoolwide behavior standard and acknowledges when students are displaying good behaviors. Support staff, cafeteria aides and security guards all have pawprints to give out.

Robert Moses counselors have also partnered with L.I. Crisis Center for push-in lessons on social-

emotional learning and awareness. During the interactive workshops, community educators speak to students on topics such as mental health, managing emotions and cyberbullying awareness, depending on the grade level.

Robert Moses counselors are also visiting sixth grade classrooms to work on goal setting and reflection on the first quarter of school for students. They are breaking down goals into short-term and long-term to help give

students a sense of direction, responsibility and respect, tying into the 3Rs initiative. They recently asked students to write down a goal on a feather. The feathers were all joined together to create an art mural of wings on a bulletin board that reads “Where Will Your Wings Take You.”

Working with seventh and eighth grade students, the counselors connect these goal-setting initiatives to their academic plans for high school and beyond.

They show students how to use Naviance to enter their goals and the planner tool helps them work on their organizational skills. The counselors work with eighth graders to start to explore different programs of study and think about the electives/options they have in high school.

Some additional initiatives offered at Robert Moses by the counseling staff include a Lunch Bunch program, where students can meet new faces, play

games and interact during their lunch period outside the cafeteria. Following morning announcements on Wednesdays, there’s a Wellness Wednesday tip of the day for students that connects back to different social emotional learning initiatives in the building. Eighth grade students can also sign up to be student ambassadors to welcome new students in the building or peer tutors/homework helpers after school for the younger students.

Local Foundation, Big Mission

The Chloe Belle Foundation is a local non-profit organization started by the family of Chloe. Chloe was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 25. She underwent countless treatments, but unfortunately the cancer only progressed. It eventually invaded her spine and left her paralyzed and in immense pain. Thirteen months later, Chloe passed away at home beside her family.

Chloe left a huge impact on those around her, she prioritized the happiness of others and brought joy wherever she went. The Lindberg Family started this foundation as a way to honor Chloe and continue her work here on earth. The mission of the Chloe Belle Foundation is to support children and young adults who have also been diagnosed with cancer, and offer them the same joy and light that Chloe herself was.

Remi Lindberg, President of The Chloe Belle Foundation said, “We have big goals for the foundation. I want Chloe to live on forever. She deserves

that. Most importantly, I want to bring Chloe’s kindness and love to the world on a large scale.”

The Chloe Belle Foundation will begin selling merchandise starting this February to benefit the foundation. They also will be hosting their annual toy drive in the spring, and will have more information on the event soon.

They will be collaborating with Mario’s Pizzeria in East Northport on February 21, 2023. When customers order on that day and mention The Chloe Belle Foundation, their foundation will receive 20% from the pre-tax sale.

The Federal Reserve (the Fed) made unprecedented rapid and consecutive interest rate hikes to try to lower inflation in 2022, watching the average mortgage rates from the beginning of the year more than double – something that’s never happened before in the same calendar year. This had a negative impact on buyer activity. Interestingly, as this happened, inventory levels only inched up a bit locally

In 2022 things changed. We had a moderation in home prices. Months supply of inventory increased causing longer marketing time to locate a buyer. The housing supply grew by single digits changing the balance between supply and demand, however, the active inventory was still below the norm as buyer demand pulled back due to higher mortgage rates.

Some buyers and sellers put their plans on hold and decided to wait until the market felt a bit more predictable.

What does that mean for 2023? What we are hearing is most people want to see more stability in the market.

For that to happen we’ll need to see inflation continue to drop and stay at an acceptable level. We expect inflation will be something to watch throughout 2023 and as it moves up or down and as interest rates adjust so will the real estate market.

It is expected that interest rates will range from 5.5% up to 6.5%. If inflation continues to drop we can see modest interest rate drops as well.

What Will Happen to Home Prices Next Year?

Homes prices are defined by supply and demand. If buyer demand is stronger than the supply of houses for sale we can see a moderate increase in house prices. If the reverse is true (less buyer demand and larger supply of houses for sale), then depending on the gap between supply and demand, house values can increase less, flatten, or even recede below current values.

I believe we will land somewhere in the middle with a low single digit or flat appreciation in 2023.

Bottom Line

The 2023 local housing market will move, based on what happens with mortgage interest rates and the interest rates will move on what happens with inflation.
