The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Babylon Citizens Council On The Arts Receives National Endowment For The Arts Grant

BACCA (Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts) is pleased to announce that they are receiving a grant of $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support the planning, design and execution of an organizational marketing and outreach initiative with the goal of increased community engagement, and a focus on increasing equity and accessibility.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support organizations across the country, including BACCA. The arts help communities to thrive,” said Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD., chair of the National Endowment for the Arts. “Meaningful engagement with the arts can have many benefits, from contributing to collective healing and mutual understanding,

to strengthening local economies.”

With this support, BACCA will design and distribute new digital and print graphics as well as informational and publicity materials in multiple languages, and host arts programs and provide resources with ASL interpretation and language translation services.

“We are grateful to the NEA for its continued support,” said BACCA Executive Director Liz Mirarchi.“ This grant will allow BACCA to continue to ensure the organization’s programs and arts opportunities are visible and accessible to all members of our local community.”

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought 4-Session Training In November

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will

have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities; deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

(b) that a tax is hereby voted therefor in the amount of not to exceed $9,700,000 to finance such cost, such tax to be levied and collected in installments in such years and in such amounts as shall be determined by said Board of Education; and

(c) that in anticipation of said tax, the Board of Education may authorize the issuance of bonds of the School District in the principal amount of not to exceed $9,700,000 and a tax is hereby voted to pay the interest on said bonds as the same shall become due and payable.

Such Bond Proposition shall appear on the ballot used for voting at said Special District Meeting in substantially the following abbreviated form:

risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, and administration of Naloxone (Narcan). Each registered participant will receive a free Narcan kit at the completion of the training.

NORTH BABYLON’S RECORD-BREAKING RUNNING BACK - North Babylon High School senior running back Nathaniel Griffith broke three separate records during the varsity football game against Smithtown High School West on Oct. 1. Griffith made history during the homecoming game, breaking the North Babylon High School, Suffolk County and Long Island single game rushing yards record with 38 carries, 489 yards and seven touchdowns. In addition, the North Babylon varsity football team broke the previous school scoring record in their win by putting up 75 points. Babylon Encouraging Donations To Assist Puerto Rico And Florida In Wake Of Hurricanes Fiona And Ian

The images emerging from the State of Florida in recent days and Puerto Rico in recent weeks are heartbreaking. As a shoreline community that has experienced devastation caused by Mother Nature, our hearts are with the people of Puerto Rico

and Florida as are our thoughts and prayers. We will soon mark the 10 year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy devastating our community. In the wake of Sandy, Babylon received immense support through all sorts of donations.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the Babylon Town Board are encouraging residents to show Puerto Ricans and Floridians the same generosity we were shown 10 years ago through monetary donations to private funds set up to support those affected by both storms.

PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is a disaster relief fund that has been focused on rebuilding Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017. Following Hurricane Fiona’s impact on the island, the organization is collecting money for short and long-term humanitarian needs. The PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is organized in partnership with the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico, a 501(c)(3) tax deductible corporation.

The Florida Disaster Relief Fund. The Florida Disaster Relief Fund is the state’s official private fund established to assist Floridians in response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Ian. Donations to

the fund are made through the Volunteer Florida Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible charity organization. State officials have announced that the disaster relief fund is the best way to help Floridians who are struggling in the wake of Ian.
