North Babylon Student Suria Ramsagar Honored With Citizenship Award
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently recognized Suria Ramsagar of North Babylon with the 2022 North Babylon High School Legislative District 17 Citizenship Award.
Ms. Ramsagar is a dedicated student who has balanced academics with volunteer service. For the last three years, Ms. Ramsagar has been a part of the Drama Department’s
costume crew where her talent and skills have been helpful to other students.
She is also a member of the Student Equity Team, Students for a Better World, Gender Sexuality Alliance and the Student Council. She learned that she was the recipient of the award during the high school’s senior awards ceremony on Thursday, June 9 where Legislator Donnelly presented her with a
County Proclamation.
“It is a pleasure to recognize those that go above for their school and community and, based on her service and accomplishments, Ms. Ramsagar certainly embodies the intended spirit of the Citizenship Award,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I know that she has a very bright future, and I wish her all of my best.”

Mindfulness & Spirituality Workshop Through Art
Assistant Director for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, along with Kimberly Newman, BFA, Communications and Marketing Coordinator for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program.
The workshop will take place on four consecutive Thursdays—October 27, November 3, November 10 and November 17—from 10
am to 11:30 am.
All four sessions will start with a relaxation/breathing exercise. Then participants will complete several creative projects focusing on mindfulness & spirituality. These projects will help reduce negativity and will be self-soothing resulting in stress reduction.
Participants will need computer access with a camera, microphone, and
internet. Each attendee will receive a package in the mail containing: a printed packet outlining each session; printed sheets needed for activities; the zoom link for the workshop; and art supplies. Some additional everyday items will be needed. The packet will list everything needed for each session.
This workshop is free but registration is required and
members must commit to attending the entire fourweek-session. Registration ends on October 14.

Babylon UFSD To Launch Citizens Advisory Committee
Group To Provide BOE Input On Social Emotional Learning And Student Safety
In an effort to maintain an open dialogue with the Babylon school community, the Babylon Union Free School District Board of Education is launching a citizens advisory committee. The focus of the group will be to gather input regarding student social emotional learning as well as student safety, and to relay it to the board.
“From day one this board has been committed to regaining the trust of the greater Babylon community and to continuing healthy and open conversations with the stakeholders in the district that make it such a special place for learning,” said Babylon BOE President Carol Dell’Erba. “As we finally make a full return to normalcy following years of pandemic, we hope to gather input on reducing student anxiety and to allay any and all student safety concerns. We vow to take all committee input seriously, and we hope to turn it into actionable policy that will enrich the lives of all in our schools.”
Commenting on the formation of a citizens advisory committee in the District, Interim Superintendent of Schools Brian Conboy noted, “I was presented with the
idea of a citizens advisory committee not long after coming on as interim superintendent for the District. I have worked with these types of committees in the past and believe they can be a useful avenue for gathering additional information from residents. I look forward to the ideas and recommendations this committee can provide in helping us optimize our efforts in the area of our students social-emotional health and wellbeing”

Historically High Fuel Prices
Historically high fuel prices will undoubtedly prove to be one of the defining stories of 2022. As the average price for a gallon of gas reached heights drivers might never have imagined as recently as February 2022, some might
have wondered just how much that same gallon might have cost roughly 100 years ago.
According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1929 was 21 cents. Inflation
calculators indicate that 21 cents in 1929 would have about the same purchasing power as $3.59 has in 2022, suggesting that drivers had a far less painful trip to the pump in 1929 than they have had for much of 2022.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services
October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.
October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.
October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.
Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.
Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.
Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation. Since 1893, they have been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are blind, have low vision or combined hearing and vision loss. Their mission is to enable individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, have vision loss, or hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in the communities of their choice.

Our Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) is located in Port Washington and is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.
