Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Summer 2023 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Babylon:

West Babylon School District welcomed back students and staff for the start of the 2023-2024 school year. Students were all smiles as they kicked off the new year with plenty of smiles and sunshine to start their day on Sept. 5. With their backpacks filled with new school supplies, the elementary students were eager to start

the school year, meet their teachers, and reconnect with their friends. The district’s youngest learners met with their teachers and explored their new classrooms and buildings prior to the start of the school year.

At West Babylon Junior High School and West Babylon Senior, teachers, staff members and

administrators greeted students at the building entrances. The incoming sixth grade and ninth grade students familiarized themselves with their buildings, lockers and schedule during their respective orientations prior to the start of the school year.

What Is Yom Kippur?

Yom Kippur is an annual holiday in the Jewish faith. Considered the holiest day in Judaism, Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement. According to History. com, Yom Kippur marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe. Those 10 days represent a period of introspection and repentance. On Yom Kippur, faithful Jews are asked to make amends and seek forgiveness for sins committed during the previous 12 months. Yom Kippur has many traditions, including a roughly 25hour period of fasting and prayer. Jews believe that God judges all people’s fate for the coming year during the 10 Days of Awe, which begins with the Jewish New Year celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Due to the significance of Yom Kippur, Jews refrain from working on the holiday. That includes high-profile professional athletes. In fact, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax, a practicing Jew, famously refused to pitch in Game One of the 1965 World Series because the game was scheduled to take place on Yom Kippur. Religious services on Yom Kippur bear such significance that some congregations seek additional space to accommodate all worshippers. While the 25-hour fast is a significant component of the holiday, some people are exempt from fasting. Women who have recently given birth, the sick, and the elderly are allowed to eat during Yom Kippur. Those who observe the fast do so because it is believed to cleanse the body and spirit. As significant as the fast is, food still plays an essential role in Yom Kippur observations. For instance, feasts on the eve of Yom Kippur tend to be plentiful, so people who will fast can gather strength for the holiday. In addition, once the fast has ended, another festive meal takes place. Yom Kippur begins sunset of Sunday, September 24, 2023. Ends nightfall of Monday, September 25, 2023.

Babylon Youths Take 3rd Place In Annual Battle Of The Books

Babylon Public Library youths take 3rd place in Suffolk County’s annual Battle of the Books competition!

Every summer, Suffolk County libraries gather with teams of young adult players (entering grades 6-9) to test their trivia mettle on six selected books. Each library team reads the same six books

during the summer with a culmination trivia challenge in August. On August 12, thirty Suffolk County libraries met at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge to participate in the Battle of the Books.

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations.

NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time,

or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

of their day, many specialneeds individuals perform a range of tasks for not-forprofits that help to keep the doors open and the milk of

human kindness flowing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was

at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception.

Special-needs individuals step in to do the most basic tasks to more intricate things such as data entry, interacting with donors and computer and office tasks.

“Our clients make the decision about which organizations they’d like to volunteer with,” says Christina Abbinanti of Life’s WORC in Garden City. She said that clients participate as part of the Program Without Walls that allows special-needs individuals to integrate into the community. The clients volunteer at a range of organizations throughout the week. “They also learn valuable job and interpersonal skills.”

At Hair We Share on Long Island, special-needs volunteers keep the doors

open and allow the allvolunteer organization to continue to provide free, hand-laced wigs to medical patients. The wigs, which average $4,000 each, are custom fitted to patients.

“Volunteers are our life blood,” says co-founder Dean Riskin. “We have no paid staff. We have seventyfive-thousand ponytails we are sitting on that need to be sorted, weighed and bagged and we couldn’t do it without them.”

In addition to getting a warm feeling about helping, special-needs volunteers hone important work and

social skills that help them when they apply for jobs.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths on Long Island – and throughout the U.S. In an effort to end lung cancer, the American Lung Association is launching its first ever

LUNG FORCE Walk Long Island at Eisenhower Park on October 7, 2023.

LUNG FORCE initiative unites those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers to stand together against lung cancer. LUNG FORCE Walks happen all around the county as

celebratory and welcoming events that provides critical funds for lifesaving lung cancer research, early detection initiatives and awareness. Registration for the Long Island event is open at LUNGFORCE.org/ LongIsland

“The Long Island community has been deeply impacted by Lung Cancer, and many Long Island residents have joined us for events in Manhattan and the Hudson Valley. This year, we are proud to bring our LUNG

Nicole Sturiano, a resident of Ridge, New York and captain of Team Jeanine has helped raise over $50,000 and has participated in the New York City LUNG FORCE Walk since its inception in 2015. She said, “My sister, Jeanine, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at only 42 years old. After just two years of fighting the toughest battle of her

life, Jeanine passed away on December 1, 2015. Our team has been walking to carry on the legacy of my sister, to advance the effort to find a cure, and to bring awareness to lung cancer. Zoom Workshop: Nutrition And Healthy Living

“Surviving Breast Cancer: Empower yourself with nutrition and a healthy lifestyle” is a free forum to be held on Friday, September 22 from 12 noon to 1 pm on zoom.

Dr. Heather Zinkin, a radiation oncologist at Northwell Health in Huntington, will provide important information to empower patients to take hold of their health. Topics to be discussed include health screenings, prevention, vaccines, and more.

Dr. Heather Zinkin has a special interest in integrative medicine, patient wellness and nutrition. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from NYU School of Medicine and performed her medical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed a residency in

radiation oncology at a combined program at Tufts and Brown University and served as chief resident. She then returned to her hometown where she has been practicing for the past 15 years and was appointed Chief of Radiation Medicine at Huntington Hospital. She has given many survivorship lectures both in hospital and community settings including active participation in the Northwell Wellness Center.
