The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs’ (CDMRP), Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) consumer advocate recently participated in the evaluation of research applications submitted to the BCRP. Joanne Marquardt was nominated for participation in the program by the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. As a consumer reviewer, Joanne was a full voting member, (along with prominent scientists) at meetings to help determine how the $150 million appropriated by Congress for Fiscal Year 2022 will be spent on breast cancer research. Consumer reviewers are asked to represent the collective view of patients by preparing comments on the impact of the research on issues such as diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life. When commenting on serving as a consumer reviewer, Joanne said that , “It was an honor to participate in insuring that breast cancer research has an impact that will transition from the laboratory to the patient.Consumer advocates and scientists have worked together in this unique partnership to evaluate the merit of research applications since FY92. Place your ad in the Classifieds. 631-226-2636 Ext. 276 At a recent meeting of the Babylon Town Board, Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman DuWayne Gregory and the rest of the board presented Meagan Reilly and Don Chiappetta, two seasonal employees at Cedar Beach Marina, with the Town of Babylon Heroism Award, the highest honor offered. In June of 2021, Meagan and Don were working at the Marina when Meagan noticed a bicycle in the brush off of the Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway near the entrance to Cedar Beach Marina. The two rushed to the scene and found cyclist Alex Szulman, who was disoriented and injured after passing out while riding his bike.Meagan, a young nursing student at the time, quickly sprang into action, calling 911, and addressing Mr. Szulman’s injuries until paramedics arrived. Meagan noticed that Mr. Szulman was wearing and ID bracelet, allowing her to communicate with him using his first name. She was able to ask questions, checking the level of disorientation that could be associated with a head injury, and help make him feel more comfortable. “It was a miracle that Alex passed out exactly where he did and we will be forever grateful to Meagan for her deep compassion and nursing skills that helped Alex have a good outcome after a very scary situation that might have ended much worse if it weren’t for her,” Carla and Alex Szulman said in a letter to the Town. “This story is a perfect testament to the terrific seasonal staff we have working at all of our parks facilities each year,” said Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “On behalf of the board, it is my honor to present Meagan and Don with the Town’s heroism award and thank them for life-saving action they took when they came to Mr. Szulman’s aid last summer,” he added.
Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.
