Award From BRIDGE NY To Enhance Phelps Lane Culvert

The Town of Babylon recently received funding from New York State’s BRIDGE NY initiative to replace a crucial culvert in the community. The BRIDGE NY initiative combats climate change through the support of projects that reduce the risk of flooding, improving structure resiliency and enhancing regional economic status as well. As part of the recent funding announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, the Town was awarded $1.96 million to replace the Phelps Lane culvert carrying the tributary to Carlls River in Suffolk County.

“This funding assists us in making the necessary

additions to improve the safety, sustainability and reliability of infrastructure,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “Our daily interactions with our crucial infrastructure, especially bridges and culverts, allow us to often take their resiliency for granted. However, it is our significant and perpetual use of them that makes the maintenance and upgrades of our infrastructure paramount.”

The $1.96 million award given to the Town of Babylon was part of $516 million in enhanced assistance allocated to 141 local governments by BRIDGE NY. Long Island received the most

funding of any New York region, totaling $73.5 million. Over 140 bridges and culverts in New York State will be enhanced to better withstand extreme weather and boost safety. Local governments will be supported throughout the entire process of their infrastructure improvements, from design to right-ofway acquisition to construction.

Prior to this recent designation of funding, the BRIDGE NY initiative distributed more than $716 million to local governments. The capital plan adopted by the State last year committed $1 billion to BRIDGE NY, almost doubling the size of the program.

Town officials stopped by the Suffolk County 1st Pct. on July 10th to wish Police Officer Margery “Margie” Marotta congratulations on her retirement from the Suffolk County Police Department after 28 years of exceptional service to the First Precinct! Supervisor Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Martinez, and Councilman McSweeney said they were proud to

join her and many others as she left the precinct for the last time earlier that week.

Best known for leading the Law Enforcement Explorers as an Explorer Post Advisor, Officer Marotta devoted much of her career to crime prevention, and helping residents learn emergency preparedness methods. Many kids who grew up

in the Town of Babylon over the last two decades will also recognize Officer Marotta as she served our schools as a School Resource Officer for much of her career.

The Town Board said they would like to extend its best wishes to Police Officer Marotta on her wellearned retirement. Thank you for your service and commitment to Babylon!

Senator Monica R. Martinez Announces $70K State Grant For West Babylon Steel Fabricator

Senator Monica R. Martinez has announced that West Babylon steel fabricator Red Ironworks, Inc. has been awarded a $70,000 Empire State Development (ESD) grant to assist in the expansion of its Kean Street facility and purchase equipment that will produce steel for the offshore wind sector.

State Awards $660,000 To Federation Of Organizations For Programs That Combat Drug Addiction

The Federation of Organizations for the New York State Mentally Disabled, a multi-service, community-based social wellness agency based in West Babylon, has been awarded $660,000 towards further establishing its comprehensive outpatient treatment programs for those suffering from addiction, Senator Monica R. Martinez announced. The award stems from the state’s Opioid Settlement Fund and is part of a $5.8 million distribution to similar programs throughout New York State.

Programs receiving this

funding will offer both an outpatient treatment program and an opioid treatment program at the same location to facilitate broad, people-centered services - particularly for opioid use disorder.

“Integrating treatments and centralizing these programs makes them more easily accessible and increases their success rate,” said Senator Monica R. Martinez of the award.

“Long Island continues to be in the midst of a severe opioid crisis,” she added. “We need programs like this that guide those suffering from substance use

disorders toward their road to recovery.”

Incorporated as a non-profit in 1972, the Federation of Organizations has since grown into a major health and human services agency providing a wide range of health and wellness services, senior and children’s services, housing, and support services for thousands of vulnerable community members on Long Island and New York City. Its Suffolk County community centers and clinics are located in Patchogue, Copiague, Medford, and Wyandanch.

PSEG Long Island’s Summer Food Collection Initiative

PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank are kicking off PSEG Long Island’s third annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive initiative.

Continuing through Sept. 22 – the last full day of summer – collection drives will be set up at six supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity.

Online donations are being accepted throughout the campaign at psegliny. com/feedli. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.

“We created PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island as a way to provide a venue for people to help people. In the past two

years, hundreds of Long Islanders have donated online and brought bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food to our collection sites to support the initiative,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Our goal this summer is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. PSEG Long Island is committed to playing an active role in improving the communities we serve. We are proud to partner with Island Harvest and our supermarket partners for the third year to help put food on the tables of families in our communities who need it.”

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and other

programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free or reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate continue to strain local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

“Island Harvest Food Bank is grateful to our valued partners, PSEG Long Island, for hosting the third annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection event to help address the critical shortage of food through the summer months for people facing food insecurity,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “With school feeding programs halted for the summer break, families already struggling to make ends meet are faced with additional challenges, and the support of PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and the generosity of their customers will help ease

that burden.”

Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate nonperishable food items. Collection bins and a drivethru, drop-off option will be available at each location.

The food drives will take place on Fridays as follows:

· Sept. 1 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop & Shop - 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport, NY

· Sept. 15 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop & Shop - 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon, NY

Representatives from PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank will be available at all locations to provide information on low-income programs and money-saving energy efficiency options.

Island Harvest has a need for specific items, including: Nonperishable food: Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as low-sodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato

varieties, tuna and chicken, rice, pasta, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food (no glass containers please).

Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.

Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.

Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.

Additionally, information will be available from PSEG Long Island on electric service payment plans and programs, and ways to save money through energy efficiency options.
