CLUBS MAKES CONNECTIONS - West Babylon Junior High School has dozens of clubs for students in all grades to connect with peers. The art club meets weekly; one day for sixth grade students and another for seventh and eighth graders. The club is currently working on vision boards and has completed projects such as origami, scratch art and shells/rock art this year. Another club option for students who love to write is the newspaper club. Summertime Could Be Employment Time For Qualifying Suffolk County Youths

Qualifying Suffolk County residents between the ages of 14 and 20 may be able to secure summer employment through the 2023 Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)-funded Summer Work Experience Program, according to Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) who is making applications available through his district office in Huntington Station.

“This program, offered through the Suffolk County Department of Labor, is a wonderful way for County youths to take advantage of their time off from school to earn money to help with their personal or family expenses,” Legislator Donnelly said.

Deadline to apply is June 23, 2023 with the program scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 3, 2023 and run for seven

weeks through Friday, August 18, 2023. Qualifying program participants will be paid $15 per hour and may work up to 25 hours each week. Besides the age qualifications, applicants must meet United States residency requirements and the gross annual income of the participant’s family must not exceed:

• $29,160 for a family of one

• $39,440 for a family of two

• $49,720 for a family of three

• $60,000 for a family of four

• $70,280 for a family of five

• $80,560 for a family of six

• For family units of more than six, add $10,120 for each additional family member

Youth applicants automatically qualify for the program if they are receiving: Food Stamps, Public Assistance, Home Energy Assistance Program

(HEAP), Social Security Income (SSI), or Medicaid. If you do not meet the income guidelines and do not receive any of the benefits listed, your application will still be considered based on availability of additional funding.

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations.

NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of

time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs. Anyone interested should call Western Suffolk BOCES to meet with a counselor. Call 667-6000, Ext. 327 to register.

Beginning at North Babylon High School, the ride by was led by the North Babylon Fire Department and followed by the North Babylon High School marching band. At Marion G. Vedder Elementary School, students and staff lined the school’s driveway, holding up signs of encouragement and inspiration. ALS Ride for Life will visiting schools across Long Island from May 8-19. The organization was founded in 1997 with the mission of raising research funds to find a cure for ALS, supporting patients and their families through patient services and increasing public awareness. At least two $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded to students who have had personal experience with homelessness. Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certified trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

The dogs they train are taught specialized tasks and skills such as retrieval of dropped items, positional cues to extend their handler’s personal space when in a crowded setting, counterbalance, nightmare interruption, pressing buttons

Town Of Babylon Distributes Funds To Shannon Romanchuk Saturno Foundation

At a recent Town Board meeting, the Town of Babylon presented the Shannon Romanchuk Saturno Foundation with a $25,000 check from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding the Town has distributed to local nonprofits, small businesses and veterans organizations. Shannon’s mother and father, Jean Marie and Gene Romanchuk, and her

accepted the check on behalf of the foundation.

“The Romanchuk family has been here several times over the years for important community contributions,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “The first time was when Shannon was still with us, as she worked with myself, the Town Board and members of the state legislative delegation. She passed away shortly

Shannon Romanchuk Saturno was a Babylon Elementary School teacher deeply dedicated to her community who sadly passed away from breast cancer in 2016. In her honor, her family formed the Shannon Romanchuk Saturno Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps

through uplifting measures and advocates for breast cancer awareness and prevention.

“The foundation has accomplished a great deal and impacted so many lives in the community,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “We are looking forward to seeing the amazing work you do.”

States and the leading cause of disability in older age. Each year approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke. While approximately 80% of those who have a stroke will survive, the majority of these will remain with some degree of physical impairment or disability.
