DECISION DAY CELEBRATED IN WEST BABYLON - On May 2, West Babylon Senior High School recognized the post-secondary plans of the members of the Class of 2023. The date is known as the official “decision day” for those students headed to college in the fall. In celebration of Decision Day, students and staff at West Babylon Senior High School proudly wore their college gear to school and gathered with their friends for photo opportunities. Interesting facts about Memorial

Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day.

The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony where they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by Southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have

influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning of summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin, are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Deputy Presiding Officer of Suffolk County Legislature Steven J. Flotteron recognized West Babylon’s Kerry Rudden as this year’s Suffolk County 1916 Easter Rising Memorial Scholarship recipient. She was presented with a $1,500 check during the Annual Wreath Laying

and Remembrance at the Easter Rising Centennial Memorial located at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

A coalition of Irish American groups in Suffolk County joined in a campaign to raise funds for a memorial to the 1916 Easter Rising. Members of the local

chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Emerald Societies of the Suffolk County Police and Fire Departments and the Gerry Tobin Irish Language School erected the memorial behind the Peter Cohalan Court complex in 2016.

Town Of Babylon Proclaims May As Jewish Heritage Month

The Town of Babylon recently issued a proclamation to declare May as Jewish Heritage Month.

Deborah Peretz, the Northeast Regional Director of IsraelLINK at StandWithUs, attended the recent Town Board meeting and accepted the proclamation on the organization’s behalf.

“Judaism has such an important role not just across the Town of Babylon but throughout the country and world as well,” said Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta. “It is crucial that we continue to enhance the inclusivity of our diverse community. My wife and her family are Jewish, and when you witness the amount of

antisemitism occurring in the world, you recognize the need for impactful action.”

The recognition of May as Jewish Heritage Month is one step in the Town of Babylon’s plans to enhance the comfortability, safety and celebration of Long Island’s Jewish population. The Town is also partnering with organizations championing Jewish identity and combating antisemitism, such as StandWithUs. As an international, non-partisan education organization that supports Israel and fights antisemitism, StandWithUs is working with the Town on awareness initiatives.

“As you know, antisemitism is on the rise,” said Deborah Peretz, who leads the educational branch of StandWithUs Northeast. “The best way to ensure our children have a safe future is through education, so thank you to the Town of Babylon for taking this important step.”

“We are proud to have a significant Jewish population and to partner with Jewish groups on important campaigns, especially combating antisemitism,” said Councilman Manetta. “As public officials, it is our role to make sure everyone knows bigotry is not tolerated and the Jewish community is welcome.”
