Who Are Your “Toilet Paper & Paper Towels?”

As we still find ourselves enduring this pandemic, we are slowly yet surely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. T h e r e is talk of re-opening businesses, heightened anxiety seems to be diminishing and the curve has begun to flatten. My thoughts and prayers remain with those in need, as well as those serving on the frontlines. We will continue to stand strong and one day this pandemic will fully be behind us.

This past week, our Publisher was able to purchase toilet paper and paper towels in bulk. He kindly left a large stash of these items in our office and let each employee know that they can take some home as needed.

It was a selfless gesture and people appreciated it.

However, when I got home I chuckled at the thought of it! Who would have thought that toilet paper and paper towels would ever be viewed as hot items and that employees would get excited over the distribution of paper products?

Just like with those paper products, there are moments where I forget just how important they are to me.

Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only.

Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption.

The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time.

We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes.

As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff.

In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes.

During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only.

While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time.

How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19.

This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak.

To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The toughest part for pet lovers is that you must remember that you really should not be petting, snuggling, or sharing kisses or food with your pet!

He directly coordinates the delivery of high-quality professional development workshops to faculty on topics ranging from Google Drive, eSchooldata, Google Classroom and Smartboards.

Mr. Rose also leads the School Administrators Bargaining Unit and he has run the Alternative High School, but his leadership in the area of technology requires so many behindthe-scenes activities

that require immense amounts of attention to detail, collaboration and organization. He develops budgets and coordinates ordering and purchasing, while simultaneously looking for ways to improve systems and learning.

In the last year under his leadership, the district received new digital copy machines and the district’s router/switches were also upgraded.

Additionally, every classroom received training on how to use the new Smartboards.

The district congratulates Mr. Rose on this achievement and applauds his dedication he puts toward his position.

Mr. Rose will be recognized during a special ceremony scheduled in June.

Serve up homemade salsa this Cinco de Mayo

uch like St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by people with no trace of Irish heritage, Cinco de Mayo has become a day of celebration for people who do not trace their ancestry to Mexico. In fact, History.com notes that Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, where the day commemorates a symbolic yet not significantly strategic win by a heavily outnumbered Mexican army over French forces sent by Napoleon III to establish an empire on Mexican land. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to commemorate Mexican culture, including its much-loved cuisine.

Food is front and center at many Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Those who simply want to enjoy some homemade Mexican fare this Cinco de Mayo can try their hands at this recipe for “Fiery Corn Salsa” from Kelley Cleary Coffeen’s “200 Easy Mexican Recipes” (Robert Rose).

FIERY CORN SALSA Makes 2 cups 1⁄4 3

cup olive oil

tablespoons freshly squeezed

teaspoons minced fresh cilantro

3

tomatoes, seeded and diced

to 3 jalapeño peppers, seeded

11⁄2

cups corn kernels and diced

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, combine oil, lime juice and cilantro. Add tomatoes, corn and jalapeño to taste. Mix well until corn mixture is well coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour or up to 2 days.

TIP In place of the corn kernels, you can used canned corn, drained; frozen corn, thawed; or corn from the cob, cooked on the stove top. For a smoky flavor, use corn grilled on the barbecue grill.

inco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 defeat of the French by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla. That battle occurred during the Franco-Mexican War, which was an invasion of Mexico launched by the French in 1861. The French invaded Mexico as a result of newly elected Mexican President Benito Juarez's decision to suspend interest payments on loans the country took out from foreign countries. France was one such creditor, but the French were not the only country to send troops to Mexico in response to Juarez's decision. Spain and Great Britain also sent troops to Veracruz, but both countries entered negotiations with Mexico and ultimately

withdrew their forces. However, France, under the leadership of Napoleon III, wanted to ensure access to Latin American markets.

The French naval fleet's arrival in Veracruz forced President Juarez and his government to retreat. Months later, Juarez's force of 2,000 squared off against 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla.

Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mexican forces claimed victory, losing fewer than 100 men while French casualties numbered nearly 500. While the victory itself did not prove a major win in the war against the French, it symbolized the strength of the Mexican people and served to strengthen the resistance movement. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico, but has grown into a popular celebration of Mexican culture in the United States.

Some rescue organizations are seeing adoptions and fosters up but this is because people are homebound right now. This leaves the shelters worried about what will happen to the animals when people go back to work.

There are some people who fear for their own well-being and financial stability, which motivates them to drop their pets off at the rescue shelter. They feel they can’t adequately take care of their pets during this time, so they surrender them, putting more strain on shelters.

Many shelters have to cancel fundraising events that usually bring in a lot of money to fund their programs.

Additionally, some shelters offer spring break camps as a fundraising tool, and those had to be canceled due to the pandemic.

Many rescue organizations and shelters are trying to help people care for their pets by providing them with food. This helps to keep the person from surrendering the animals to the shelter or rescue organization.

Food donations to many shelters are down, simply because people are focused on their own families and are staying home.

This leaves shelters scrambling to try to come up with enough money and food to continue feeding all of the animals, as well as providing them with any medical care they may need.

“The pandemic has

created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need. Our programs have helped countless animals including military members.

Without the support of the community, we will not survive and we cannot help the animals who so desperately need our assistance.”

Most of us are aware of the toll that the pandemic is having on humans around the country, and even around the world. Yet the economic impacts are being felt beyond humans. The animals are being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle in being able to provide their services.

Guardians of Rescue has had an increase in dogs to care for, while their financial stability to do so declines. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed with the hardest hit people who can’t feed their pets and taking in abandoned animals left to fend for themselves which has become a big problem. Now, they are now turning to the people and asking that their organization be rescued amid the pandemic.

“We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.”

6 Steps To Get Your CARES Act Funds Fast (StatePoint) Millions of U.S. residents will receive government stimulus payments (also known as Economic Impact Payments) under the CARES Act. Payments to eligible recipients will arrive by either direct deposit or a paper check.

Here are some helpful tips from Wells Fargo that may help you access your funds as soon as possible.

1. Determine if you qualify for a government stimulus payment. Your eligibility is determined by the federal government. To learn more about eligibility

and payment amounts, visit IRS.gov/coronavirus under the “Economic Impact Payments” link.

2. Learn how you’ll receive your stimulus payment. If you filed a federal tax return in 2019 or 2018 and typically receive your tax refund through direct deposit, your government stimulus payment will likely arrive the same way. If you did not file a tax return or have not given the IRS your direct deposit account information in the last two years, you’ll likely receive a U.S. Treasury check in the

mail 3. Set alerts for your government stimulus payment deposit. Use mobile and online banking to check your account balances from home so you know when the stimulus payment is deposited.

Set a deposit alert on your checking or savings account to be notified once you receive a direct deposit.

4. Know where you can deposit a paper check. If you have a checking or savings account, you may be able to make a mobile deposit if your bank has

a mobile app, or make a deposit at an ATM. Make sure to check your bank’s applicable daily and monthly mobile deposit limits.

5. Look before you leave. Make sure to verify if your local bank branch is open, as they may have reduced hours or services.

6. Beware of scams. If you receive a suspicious email or text message, don’t respond, click on links, or open attachments. Check out IRS.gov for more tips to help avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness.

These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials - resulting in shortages.

Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers?

The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they

have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice.

Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease.

Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl

(rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact.

Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well.

Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemicallybased cleansers for other home tasks.

Over $550,000 Raised in Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge Long Island Community Hospital has raised over $550,000 toward its $1,000,000 goal for the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge within ten days of announcing the campaign.

The matching grant is made possible by the KnappSwezey Foundation, Island Outreach Foundation and Gardener Foundation to help raise vital funding for the community hospital in their fight against COVID-19.

“The outpouring of support has been humbling, to say the least. In a short time our community has donated over $275,000, which has been generously matched by the Knapp family to reach over $550,000,” said Richard T. Margulis, President and Chief Executive Officer at

LI Community Hospital.

“Protecting our staff and responding to our patients needs during this crisis remain the top priority, especially as we see high numbers holding steady, and the Knapp Family COVID-19 Challenge is helping us meet these needs.”

On April 8th, the Knapp Family announced that they would match every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $500,000 to directly purchase vital personal protective equipment (PPE), supplies, equipment and other items necessary to keep healthcare professionals safe during this pandemic. These purchases are ongoing and include masks, gowns, eyewear and other protective gear in high demand.

“These past few weeks have been extraordinary for us all. Everyone has been touched by this virus.

It knows no boundaries.
