Pet Food Drive in Partnership with Baxter’s Pet Pantry & Long Island Cares

Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) is inviting the local community to participate in his Pet Food Drive taking place through Wednesday, May 12, 2021 to help more pets stay out of shelters and remain at home with their families-where they belong.

Assemblyman Durso is asking residents and community organizations to kindly donate unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned food, pet supplies,

and food for other animals such as hamsters and birds.

All items collected will be donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry, operated by Long Island Cares, which provides free pet food and pet supplies to pet-owning families in need in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Contractors For Kids www.contractorsforkids.org

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child.

They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders.

CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done.

Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids.

Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help.

Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses.

So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have

filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help!

Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/ electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings.

Additionally, on June 14th CFK will be holding their 15th Annual Golf Outing at Woodside Club in Muttontown. This will be a COVID-19 compliant event...all local guidelines will be adhered to! There will be boxed breakfast, beverage carts, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, barbeque and of course, golfing.

If you would like to attend as an individual player, in a group of 4 players or you would like to sign-up as a sponsor, you can. However, space is limited. There are 7 various sponsorship opportunities, ranging from $3,000 to as little as $100. All proceeds will go back to support the mission of Contractors For Kids.

The completed application must be received by the District Clerk, at least seven (7) days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. No absentee voter’s ballot shall be canvassed unless it shall have been received in the Office of the Clerk of the School District no later than 5:00 P.M., prevailing time, on the day of the election, Tuesday, May 18, 2021. A list of all persons to whom absentee ballots shall have been issued will be available for inspection by qualified voters of the District in the said Office of the Clerk on each of the five (5) days prior to the day of election, except Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M., prevailing time and shall be available at the polling places on the day of the vote. Any qualified voter may, upon examination of such list, file a written challenge of the qualifications as a voter of any person whose name appears on such list, stating the reasons for such challenge. Any such written challenge shall be transmitted by the District Clerk or a designee of the Board of Education to the inspectors of election on Election Day during all hours of voting and registration. The District Clerk shall be at Election District No. 1.

AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that Military voters who are not currently registered may apply to register as a qualified voter of the West Babylon Union Free School District as defined by Section 2018(d)(1)(b) of the Education Law and Part 122.2 (f) of the Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.

Military Absentee Ballots (1) A military voter may designate a preference to receive a military voter registration, military ballot application and/or military ballot by mail, facsimile transmission or electronic mail in their request for a registration application, ballot application or ballot.

The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is highlighting the art works of Town of Babylon residents and the stories behind these artists which will be featured regularly in the South Bay’s Neighbor.

In commemoration of Memorial Day, it begins its series with the works of Edward Stephenson Bates, a World War II veteran, devoted father, and celebrated painter who lived in Deer Park until his death on January 29th, 2021. The article was written by Jason Jenkins, BACCA Program Coordinator. a man proud of his serving Sadly, Shirley would pass his country. From traveling on early in their marriage, to share his story with after which Bates returned primary school students to New York in continuance to receiving countless of life and in search of new official community and opportunities. In 1958 he county awards, Bates was married Gladys Owens, and recognized and formally for nearly 60 years the two honored for his service built a life together and by the United States raised a combined family Honor Flight Network at a with four more children Washington D.C. festival in of their own. Bates led his family with pride, dignity, 2016.

After WWII Edward Bates and boundless love – all which were moved to Ohio, where qualities EDWARD instilled in his six children he managed a steel mill STEPHENSON BATES factory. There he would who would each go on to Born on June 5, 1925 marry Shirley Foster and lead their own successful in Atlantic City, N.J. Mr. together the couple would lives.

Bates began crafting his have their first two children.

While living in New York legacy during the Great Depression. He graduated from high school wellregarded amongst his peers, and at 18 years old he was drafted into United States Navy to serve during WWII. After completing boot camp Bates and his group were among the first transferred to the prestigious Naval Air Technical Training School in Tennessee where their entry would break through the barriers of segregation.

He emerged from training with a rank of Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class and was assigned to the Floyd Bennett Naval Air Station in Brooklyn, New York. While his training group’s entry into the aviation school was historically significant, those unfortunate circumstances prevented him from serving on an aircraft carrier.

However, no amount of discrimination would get Gaucho, 20 x 27, oil in the way of Bates living as

Edward Bates fully immersed himself into the art world.

He began by managing the distribution of fabrics between international textile companies and would also pick up working as an illustrator for women’s wear.

Although he displayed an early talent and interest in visual arts as a child, winning Bamberger and Scholastic awards at age 12, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that Bates received a set of oil paints from his uncle and embraced oil painting as his main artistic medium.

Bates’ first oil painting, Gaucho, was painted at such a level of artistic maturity and craft comprehension that one would have to question if he did not train with the Renaissance master El Greco himself.

In no way was this a mark of beginner’s luck; Bates’s artistic talents were selftaught and consistently nurtured through everything he achieved.

For example, his aviation mechanical training surely served as a foundation for his technical precision in portraiture, creating a style that functioned comfortably between realism and the limitless sublime. Whether it was from watching boats sail along the Atlantic City Bay or sailing himself, Bates would inherit the essence of the sea which he instilled within his portraits of historical and cultural figures whose faces would shine with the fluid vitality of the ocean.

Two Girls from Benin, 22 x 24, oil Mr. Bates was truly a communal man and in addition to exhibits at the annual Brooklyn Fulton Street Art Fair, Brooklyn Museum and US Supreme Court, Bates took part in countless others as an active member of the Fulton Street Arts Consortium and the 20th Century Creators.

This nationally acclaimed artist would later move to Long Island with his daughter, settling in Deer Park, where he continued to participate in community and arts council activities.

He was also a member of the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts. Bates’ commitment to his craft, culture, and multiple communities found him highly celebrated throughout life, and especially on Long Island – notably in 2013 by the Town of Babylon for his contribution to cultural history, and in 2014

for his one-man career retrospective show at the Conklin House.

Edward Stephenson Bates lived his life to such a high degree that every entry of his story can be read as poetic fate. The culmination of his life’s work reaches beyond just historical contribution because his life, being one of boundless love, dedication, and talent, allows him to break through temporal barriers with an eternal reach, inspiring all who encounter his story and work.

(6) Irrespective of the preferred method of transmission designed by a military voter, a military voter’s original military ballot application and military ballot must be returned by mail or email to the appropriate District Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. of the date of the election.

BABYLON FIRE DEPARTMENT MOURNS LOSS OF PAST CHIEF - Earlier this month, Suffolk County Fire Rescue suffered the loss of Babylon Fire Department Past Chief and 53 year member Brad Maier. Chief Maier also served as a Deputy Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services, and currently served as a County Deputy Fire Coordinator and photographic contributor to FireNews. Chief Maier left a lasting impact on firefighting throughout Babylon and all of Suffolk County, and he will surely be missed.
