Beautification Ambassador Officially Inducted

Denise Heegan of North Babylon was recently inducted as a Beautification Ambassador by the town board. The Town of Babylon Beautification Program aims to preserve the town’s cleanliness and beauty. Denise’s appointment as an ambassador for North Babylon is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

The TOB Beautification Program stresses the importance of volunteerism and stewardship, recognizing the crucial role played by residents, local businesses, and community organizations in fulfilling its objectives.

Hospital Association Offers

$2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The

scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee.

JFK FIFTH GRADER NAMED POSTER CONTEST WINNER - Congratulations to fifth grader Aariz Chaudry from John. F. Suffolk County Legislature Irish American Heritage Award Recipient For The 11th LD

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized James J. Killen as the 11th Legislative District’s honoree at the 2nd Annual Irish American Heritage Celebration held at the H. Lee Dennison Bldg. in Hauppauge. This honor is for his life-long commitment in promoting Irish culture. Killen is a fourth generation Hibernian, as his great grandfather, Patrick J. Killen joined the AOH in New York City shortly after arriving from the Dundrum area of County Down in the late 1800s. His grandfather, also Patrick J. Killen, left County Down for NYC at the age of

thirteen with two of his older siblings around 1915 and joined the AOH in Queens County. His father, Joseph P. Killen, was a Nassau County Hibernian, then transferred to AOH St. Patrick’s Division 2 in Babylon so that he could be in the same AOH Division as his son, Jim, and his grandchildren Brian and Allison (LAOH). He is proud of his Irish American roots and has been active in promoting Irish culture and heritage since joining the AOH St. Patrick’s Division 2 in Babylon in 2001, serving as past president, is a 19-year member of Saffron Untied Pipe Band’s Color Guard,

Chairman of the Division’s Annual St. Patrick’s Ball for the past 15 years and is a current Trustee and oversees Public Relations. Killen is also on the Board of Directors at Babylon Hibernians. In addition, he is the past Director of Public Relations for AOH Suffolk County Board. He has served on the Inaugural Suffolk County Executive’s Irish American Heritage Month and continues his participation this year. He is also a member of NYC’s Irish Business Organization and a member of Long Island’s Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

The South Shore Audubon Society is offering two $1,000 scholarships for College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in the areas of biological or environmental science. This includes wildlife management, forestry, animal behavior, ecology, marine biology, oceanography, mammalogy, ornithology or the field of sustainable and renewable energy. Previous winners have used their scholarships to help purchase books, to pay for travel expenses to field sites, for specialized equipment or other educational needs.

It’s no secret animals can have a positive impact on a person’s mental and physical health. That’s why every year thousands of facilities such as libraries, schools, hospitals, assisted living, and more ask Pet Partners volunteers to bring therapy animals to visit and provide comfort to their students, residents, patients, and customers. This April 30 is a special day to recognize the beneficial role therapy dogs and other therapy animals, in partnership with their human companions, play in creating happier, healthier communities.

Unfortunately, there’s a shortage of therapy animal teams in the United States. Pet Partners is the nation’s leading registry of therapy animals, and their volunteer teams can’t fulfill all the requests they receive for therapy animal visits. The need for therapy animals has never been greater to provide comfort and support, especially after the impacts

of the pandemic, economic uncertainty, and social discord in recent years.

The good news is that a wide variety of species can be therapy animals, not just dogs. Cats, equines, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mini pigs, birds, and even llamas and alpacas are eligible for registration through the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program, which makes more than three million visits a year.

“An animal’s temperament is what determines whether they might make a good registered therapy animal with Pet Partners, not any specific species or breed,” said Pet Partners President and CEO C. Annie Peters. “Many of our therapy animals are rescue pets, and they assist everyone from veterans with PTSD, seniors living with Alzheimer’s, students with literacy challenges, patients in recovery, and people with intellectual disabilities. Therapy animals have a special aptitude for interacting with members of the public and enjoy doing so. Therapy animal handlers have a strong trust-based bond with their pet and facilitate interactions that benefit all involved. The handleranimal pair takes part in an extensive evaluation process to make sure they will be successful with people in a variety of circumstances.

We have experts available to talk about the value therapy animals bring to communities, what behaviors a pet should exhibit, how the process works and more. We also have therapy animal handlers all across the United States who would love to talk about the joys of volunteering with their pets.

Pet Partners is also specifically seeking more cats and handlers to become registered volunteer teams. In partnership with Cat Person, a cat care brand, a research study on the Cat Human Bond found that cats can provide a special form of comfort that dogs cannot. Special incentives are also being offered for new cat teams.

One Word That Can Change Everything

Last week, I pulled out of my office parking spot which is on the corner of Linton Avenue and Montauk Highway (across from the Lindenhurst Diner). I sat at the red light and looked back at my building to see a mural I had painted on it when I moved in two years ago.

I saw the side of the building as a blank canvas and thought about all the people who would drive by my building every morning and every evening. This was a golden advertising opportunity, but what did I want to tell them? Maybe I could paint something about JoAnn Cilla Real Estate or come up with a witty tag line to get people to call me if they were looking to buy or sell a house.

Nah, that’s not my style. I would rather let my friends and residents of Lindenhurst know how much I appreciate the support they gave me when I started my business in 2021. I also wanted to let people know who might be new to the area, or even those just passing through for the day, that we appreciated them spending time in our town.

Yes, that was it, but what three words would make people stop what they were doing to appreciate where they were at that exact moment?

Then it hit me…

I want the mural to remind people to pause and appreciate the big victories and the quiet moments. I want it to say to my clients, thank you for your trust and friendship. To my team, thank you for your dedication and hard work. And to our community, thank you for making Lindenhurst the best place to live. If you’re passing by, I hope the message inspires you.
