The Town of Babylon recently honored 10-year-old West Babylon resident Tyler Sullo for his exceptional service to veterans in the community. Tyler, the student body president of Forest Avenue Elementary School, declared helping local veterans to be a part of his electoral platform. Inspired

by his veteran grandparents and those in his community, he fulfilled this goal through his organization of a heartwarming dinner to benefit veterans.

“In West Babylon, we are lucky to have great people like Tyler who make up our community to help all of our organizations run,” said

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “That is what living in the Town of Babylon is all about.”

Tyler organized a free February 13 dinner for veterans that not only provided a delicious meal of spaghetti and meatballs but a sense of togetherness and gratitude near Valentine’s

Day and $1,000 raised for American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon as well. Tyler and his family coordinated with over two dozen local businesses to secure items for 29 raffled-off gift baskets, and funds were also raised through a 50/50 raffle. American Legion Post 1634 was incredibly grateful for the funds, which will help

maintain the building and its services to veterans, including crucial veterans support groups.

In a ceremony, the Town of Babylon Board presented Tyler with a certificate of appreciation, and American Legion Post 1634 bestowed him with an outstanding service award. “It goes without saying that this is

a tremendous thing to do, particularly for someone of his age,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “As a veteran, I am grateful to Tyler for recognizing the need to help our veterans and the incredible impact he can have.”

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

The Town Of Babylon Hosts The Wall That Heals Exhibit Helps Spread The Healing Legacy Of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Town of Babylon will proudly host the traveling exhibit The Wall That Heals from October 5 to 8, 2023 at Tanner Park. A 375-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., the traveling exhibit pays tribute to over three million Americans who served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. Similar to the exhibit, a smaller replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall drew thousands to Town Hall back in 1995.

“When we talked about doing this again, it was a nobrainer,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to support our veterans in this meaningful manner and provide access to a powerful monument to all in our community. We would like to especially thank Charles Spencer for his instrumental role in bringing this exhibit to the Town.”

The Wall That Heals spreads the healing legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.. This exhibit aids thousands of veterans in their healing process, empowering them to encounter The Wall in the familiarity of their own communities and emboldening their strength and courage. It also serves as an important source of peace for family and friends of veterans and

learning tool for others in the community.

“It is an honor to host The Wall That Heals,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “I believe it will truly have a profound impact on our residents and encourage all to engage with this important exhibit.”

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”

RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.

Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then

get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

Mr. Shingler is a PTA Honorary Life Recipient and PTA Distinguished Service Award Recipient. In 2009, he received the NYSUT Community Service Award for his service to the Boy Scouts of America and for being co-founder of Woods

Road’s staff holiday concert, which helped raise funds for members of the community.

Mr. Shingler is the adviser to the Belmont STEAM Club and can often be found calling numbers at WINGO or spending time at various other PTA events. During COVID, he volunteered at the high school every week, helping unpack and prepare deliveries from Island Harvest for distribution to

the community. His service to the community extends to North Babylon Community Youth Services, where he has served as the director of the before care and Almost Home programs for the past six years. He also volunteers his time at the Anthony J. Tatti Youth Center during the summer helping with his wife’s theater program.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Summer Camp Program Returns For Summer 2023

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s (GSSC) registration for its beloved summer camp programs is officially open! Girl Scouts can expect a jam-packed roster of exciting new events and curricula for the upcoming 2023 summer camp sessions. This year’s summer camp programs will run from June 26th through August 25th at Camp Edey in Bayport. Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s summer camp offers a wide range of activities and programming, from STEM to the arts, all summer long.

“We are thrilled to have girls back at Camp Edey this coming summer,” said Tammy Severino, GSSC President & CEO. “Camp is a long-standing

tradition in Girl Scouts and offers our girls a variety of opportunities to learn and explore in an empowering place. We can’t wait to share the campgrounds with girls from all across Suffolk County this year and encourage anyone who wants to take part to join us.”

Girl Scout summer camp helps expand girls’ interests, confidence, and knowledge in the outdoors in a fun and safe space. During camp, girls can learn new skills with the backing of a global sisterhood that helps them expand their horizons while connecting with their communities. GSSC’s summer camp programs are part of the ongoing mission to help girls discover and

connect with the world around them as they take action to make it a better place for all.

Every Girl Scout can find a summer camp program that is right for them at GSSC summer camp. This year’s programs include Day Camp for girls in grades 1-6, Teen Ventures (grades 7-9), and Sleepaway Camp (grades 5-9). These programs include everything from swimming, scavenger hunts, outdoor sports, crafts, gaga ball, disc golf, and much more.

Camp Edey is located in Bayport on 95 acres on the Sans Souci Lakes. It is home to the Juliette Low Friendship Center and has two pools, an archery range, and more.

New York Senator Monica R. Martinez’s Bill Passes, Providing Timely Death Benefits For Volunteer Firefighters And Ambulance Workers

Senator Monica R. Martinez’s bill S.4711 has passed the Senate, ensuring timely payment of death benefits for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers who die in the line of duty. The bill amends Section 7 of the Volunteer Firefighters’ Benefit Law and the Volunteer Ambulance Workers’ Benefit Law, mandating payment of benefits within ninety days upon the filing of application.

“Delaying payment of death benefits causes significant financial and emotional distress to the beneficiaries of our

volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers,” said Senator Martinez. “It’s unacceptable for families to wait over six months to receive the compensation they are entitled to. This legislation will provide much-needed relief to those who have lost loved ones in service to their communities.”

The bill encourages communication and coordination between volunteer fire and ambulance service organizations, workers’ compensation boards, volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers and their families to

work together and determine whether a death or injury occurred in the line of duty. This process can be a long and daunting one and this legislation will remove the burden of excessive delays in payment.

“I’m proud to have sponsored this bill and grateful for the support of my colleagues in the Legislature,” said Senator Martinez. “Volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities. It’s our duty to ensure their families are taken care of in the event of a tragedy.”
