TOWN OF BABYLON DECLARES MARCH IRISH-AMERICAN MONTH

During a recent board meeting, Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the town board officially declared March as Irish-American Heritage Month in the Town of Babylon, recognizing the significant contributions of Irish ancestors and their descendants and the shared values between Ireland and the United States. The Babylon Ancient Order of Hibernians, led by President Jim McGrath, accepted the resolution, with Pipe Major Bob Farrell performing a beautiful hymn to mark the occasion. Councilman Terence McSweeney sponsored the resolution, highlighting early Irish immigrants' diverse roles in shaping American society, from teachers and firefighters to business owners and more. McSweeney even got a chuckle and applause from those in attendance when he mentioned one of his favorite contributions was the invention of Guinness. Supervisor Schaffer announced that the town hall's Coppola would be illuminated in green throughout March as a tribute to Irish-American Heritage Month.

Recycled And Found: International Mixed Media Virtual Arts Exchange And Exhibition

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) and Sognare Insieme Viaggi travel agency are proud to announce their partnership in presenting an innovative international arts exchange: the “Recycled and Found” mixed media exhibition.

This is one of many special

events as BACCA celebrates its 50th year of service to the community through the arts. This virtual showcase will bring together artists from Calabria, Italy, and Long Island, New York and the Greater New York Metro area, inviting them to redefine artistic

boundaries by crafting mixed media artworks from unconventional found materials.

Calabria, Italy and Long Island, New York, both have vibrant artistic communities eager to foster connections and champion environmental

stewardship. The Recycled and Found exhibition serves as a platform for these artists to collaborate, inspire, and envision a sustainable future through their creative expression.

Participating artists were encouraged to utilize a variety of discarded materials including, but not limited to, plastic waste, reclaimed metal, and paper within their work. The exhibition aims to challenge viewers to reconsider the value of everyday items while promoting sustainable practices through art.

Featured artists from Long Island include Bri Sander (UpSculpt), Gregory Rapp, Tom Brydelsky, Sarah Vitale, and Scott Schneider (Toxic/Nature Studios).

Featured artists from Italy include Curator Luigi Impieri, Stefano Ricci, Antonio Froio, Delio Piccioni, Alfredo Granata, and Antonio De Pietro.

Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Babylon Winter Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Winter 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the

Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.” Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Babylon:

• North Amityville Nutrition Center, 48-C Cedar Road, Amityville: Wednesday, March 20, 10 am – 1 pm

Advocates assist with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP –formerly known as food stamps), Medicare Savings Program and

Heating Emergency Assistance Program (HEAP) applications. They also can provide information on Medicare, answer questions and make recommendations and referrals. “For more than three decades, the Suffolk County Office for the Aging has been providing full and troublefree access to critical services,” Donnelly said. “I am glad to see their great professional community outreach program continue and hope that every senior resident will make full use of it.”

Key objectives of the exhibition include forming an organizing committee of artists representing both Italy and the USA, inspiring viewers to become agents of change in their communities, fostering collaborative work, and establishing a unique framework for international arts and ideas exchange.

The program will feature:

A Virtual Art Exhibition: An online 3D gallery showcasing the work of ten artists, with five residing in Italy and five in New York.

Artist Panel Discussions for Exchange: Selected

artists will engage in a private “working and sharing session” and an online panel discussion, which will be recorded and open to the public, where they will discuss their work and artistic practices. Details on all events will be available on babylonarts.org.

Easter Sunday Mass Celebrations

Celebrations of Easter Sunday Mass are known for their joyous nature regardless of where Christians happen to be. But few, if any, celebrations of Mass can match the scope of the celebration in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the public celebration to be canceled in 2020 and

2021, but it returned in 2022. A sizable number of celebrants returned along with it, as estimates suggested around 50,000 people were on hand to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on the plaza directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on April 17, 2022. Pope Francis led the Mass, which was concelebrated with 280 priests, 25 bishops and

23 cardinals. But the crowd attending Mass was just the beginning, as Pope Francis later delivered his Urbi et Orbi benediction, a papal address and apostolic blessing the pope delivers on solemn occasions, from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica before an estimated crowd of 100,000.

Assemblyman Durso Announces

Annual Pet Food Drive

Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park), in coordination with Long Island Cares, is inviting the community to participate in his annual Pet Food Drive to help families keep their pets out of shelters and remain at home where they belong.

Assemblyman Durso is asking residents, community organizations and pet lovers to kindly donate unopened bags of dog and cat food,

canned pet food and pet supplies. All items collected will be donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry, operated by Long Island Cares, which provides free pet food and pet supplies to pet-owning families in need throughout Long Island.

Donations can be dropped off at Assemblyman Durso’s district office located at 512 Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park or at various other locations

Technology Director Appointed In West Babylon

West Babylon School District has named Cory Kindelmann as director of K-12 student data and instructional technology, effective Jan. 3.

Since 2022, Mr. Kindelmann has worked as the director/coordinator of instructional technology at Glen Cove City School District. Prior to that, he served as the director of instructional technology at Family Life Academy Charter Schools in New York City from 2020-2022 and Educate LLC from 2015-2020 as an instructional technology coach.

Mr. Kindelmann holds a Bachelor of Science degree in childhood education from SUNY New Paltz, and a master’s degree in instructional technology educator P-12 from New York Institute of Technology. He also holds an advanced diploma in school/ district leadership and technology K-12 from New York Institute of Technology.

Babylon Firefighters Receive High Honors

one of the Babylon Village volunteer firefighters when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest. High quality CPR was immediately started by firefighters Giuseppe Pergolotti and Richard Nixon, as well as Giuseppe’s wife April, who is a nurse.

The ambulance crew arrived and applied an AED, and the patient was defibrillated three times in an attempt to revive him. En route to the hospital the patient not only regained spontaneous circulation but was conscious and alert. The patient, who was

discharged with no deficits, joined the firefighters at the ceremony. The national average for cardiac arrest survival is 7-8%. The positive outcome of this situation can be largely attributed to the quick actions of those on the scene and the

immediate high-quality CPR they provided.

Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney was on hand for this award ceremony and said “The commitment and dedication displayed by our volunteer firefighters make them

truly exceptional. I’m honored to be here to celebrate with our Babylon Village firefighters and EMS personnel who are an exceptional group of individuals and deserve recognition for their selfless service.”
