T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true.

Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions.

Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions.

Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions.

Both seniors recognized the power of social media when researching their projects.

“Nowadays, people’s lives revolve around social media. We tend not to look up from our phones to see what’s actually happening around us,” Emma said. “I felt that reaching an audience by using my social platform was the most effective way to inform and start a conversation.”

Emma’s project had her turning to Instagram to gauge the community’s response to several questions pertaining to single-use plastic pollution.

She found that while 89 % of those surveyed perceived the current usage of plastic as harmful to the environment, not all agreed with the county’s ban on single-use plastics.

Moving forward, Emma encouraged individuals to support those bans, donate to organizations involved with oceanic cleanups and acknowledge the importance of recycling.

Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

It’s much easier to us to talk to you directly about your pet’s health.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850.

It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

Military voters who are qualified voters of the school district may apply for a military ballot. A military ballot application may be requested from the District Clerk and must be returned, in person or by mail, to the Office of the District Clerk, at

Law Office Building Was Built During Lincoln Presidency, Has Ties to Long Island Lawyers Who Founded the Brooklyn Bridge Corp and Became State’s Top Judge and Gilda Gricka.

The Village of Babylon Historical and Preservation Society’s Historic Homes Commitee is dedicated to researching and preserving the history of historic homes and structures in the Village of Babylon.

The building that houses the firm’s law offices is known as the Thomas Wood House, Mr. Wood being the earliest known resident. The building was constructed circa 1860, around the same time Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States.

The site has ties to Long Island’s legal community.

The property was owned

by Alexander McCue and Edgar M. Cullen, both men were founders of the law firm Cullen & Dykman. Mr. McCue went on to serve as the Solicitor of the United States Treasury under President Grover Cleveland and incorporated the New York and Brooklyn Bridge Co.. Mr. Cullen went on to serve as the Chief Judge of New York at the turn of the last century. While Chief Judge, Cullen presided over the impeachment trial of Governor Sulzer.

Wyandanch UFSD Kappa League Honors Martin Luther King Jr. By Serving Community In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday on Jan. 18, the Wyandanch Union Free School District’s High School Kappa League volunteered their time to the Wyandanch Youth Center.

The group of young men, along with Wyandanch Memorial High School Principal Mr. Paul Sibblies, volunteered their time and talents to make improvements to the center that will have a lasting impact.

The group painted a classroom, built desks and chairs, built bulletin boards in several different locations throughout the center,

cleaned the air vents and did yard work outside. Kenneth Skeen, school maintenance crew leader, volunteered and helped the young men with carpentry and assembling of furniture.

“The Kappa League has always been proud to support our community,” said Sibblies, who also serves as the Kappa League adviser. “This year on Dr. King’s birthday, during a global pandemic, we are moved to serve our neighbors who need us and help bring us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.”

Following their first round of improvement efforts, the

Kappa League created an art center and game center and designated reading circle areas for everyone to enjoy. The students then hung photos to celebrate Black History which included Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglas, Langston Hughes and Louis Armstrong.

Ending their day, Board of Education President, James Crawford was on sight and thanked the Kappa League for their service and encouraged them to continue to give back to make their community greater.

Stepping Up To The Kindness Challenge Students and staff at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District celebrated and promoted kindness throughout the week of Feb. 22 as part of the JFK Kindness Challenge Week.

Different kindness events and activities were planned for each day of the week.

Every morning, a kindness quote was being read by a student ambassador from the school quality team.

Students and staff dressed up according to different kindness-centered themes.

John F. Kennedy also hosted a schoolwide project using links to create a paper chain of kindness.

This was part of a global effort with schools around the world to set a Guinness Book of World Record for the longest paper chain of love and kindness.

During their library classes, students created three-dimensional posters with quotes that promote kindness.
