Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,

investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.

As businesses, we were gratified when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019.

The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table.

This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Students in Amy Malone’s fourth grade class at Babylon Elementary School have been working on a social emotional project to make real world connections to the content they are learning in class and the community.

Students are learning about New York history, and during their lessons, the class started exploring a locally made nonfiction

coloring book with some popular landmarks on Long Island and the history about them.

The author of those books – Jake Rose – recently visited the class to talk about the process of creating his books.

Some of Rose’s books include local towns like Greenport, the North Fork, the Hamptons, Montauk and Riverhead. Following

the presentation, there was a question-and-answer session to learn about some of the author’s favorite spots to visit.

Ms. Malone’s class plans to create their own Babylon book, featuring maps and landmarks. During the next month, they will work together to create and print a book so each student can have their own copy.

Honored For Their Work West Babylon School District administrators and board of education members thanked and recognized members of the school community for their efforts at the Feb. 9 board of education meeting.

Members of the Suffolk County Police Department, and West Babylon’s School Resource Officer Osias, were presented with tokens of appreciation and thankyou cards handmade by

students throughout the district. Officer Osias had supported the students of West Babylon for many years and recently announced her retirement.

Members of the South Bay Kindness Squad were also acknowledged for their efforts to spread cheer through the school community.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly remarked how she saw

the students holding up kindness signs outside of the school one day and it made her smile. Dr. Farrelly also presented thanks to custodian Mike Kuffo and teacher Ms. Shaw for the murals they have created in the school buildings. Both volunteered their time to create the works of art in the elementary school buildings after school and on weekends.

McCaffrey paid a visit to the Starbucks on Route 109 in West Babylon for a “Coffee with a Cop” event sponsored by the Suffolk County Police Department’s First Precinct COPE Section. The “Coffee with a Cop” program, facilitated by First Precinct COPE officers, provides a unique opportunity for the public to interact with the police in a casual setting.
