Tom Donnelly’s Pet Food Drive For Baxter’s Pet Pantry Of LI

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May

Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 12th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have

generously donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets.

Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code

Her project was focused on period poverty and the impact of not having access to hygiene products for women worldwide. In her presentation, she spoke about delivering the hygiene products she had purchased along with donations to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. STUDENT-ARTISTS HONORED - At the Feb. 16 North Babylon School District board of education meeting, several student-artists were recognized for their accomplishments. North Babylon High School students Matthew Holcombe, Emily Miccio and Peyton Silvestri were honored for being named All-County Artists. Silvestri was chosen as New York State Art Teacher’s Association artist of the month. Her artwork will be featured on New York State Youth Art Month website and social media platforms leading up to Youth Art Month in March. Her artwork was also chosen as the overall winner for the NYSATA YAM Flag contest. She won art materials from Blick art supplies. What To Do

When Things Don’t Go Your Way

As a real estate broker, I knew that the boom years of 2020 and 2021 wouldn’t last forever. For two years, houses for sale often had multiple offers before they were ever listed. Many homes went for above the asking price; sometimes well above the asking price.

But, as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Today, interest rates are more than double what they were a few years ago, home sellers aren’t leaving their 3% mortgage rates, and home buyers are waiting for more homes to hit the market and for interest rates to come down.

What do we do when business, and life, suddenly change directions? Some people put their heads in the sand and wait for everything to blow past them; others run to find a safe spot. What about the ones who stand

and face the obstacle in front of them? Often, they are the winners.

In business, when a good economy turns bad, companies will abandon their projects, lay off employees, and slash expenses. Smaller companies may go out of business because they didn’t prepare for the downturn, and they ran out of money. Look at the stores in town; that will tell you who planned

for a weaker economy and who failed to plan.

Tough times bring stress, anxiety, and tough decisions; they also bring opportunities for the people and businesses that prepare for them. Prices for many items will come down because companies have fewer customers buying their products (think of everything from home appliances to cars). Competitors will go out of business, and their customers will look for new places to spend their money. The same is true for vendors and suppliers.

What is your plan when things don’t go your way? Will you stand and fight while looking for opportunities, or will you wait for everything to blow over? I hope you decide to fight. We need stronger small businesses in our community, and we need our residents to support them along the way.

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Located at 286 Middle Island Rd in Medford, the Long Island Chapter works to raise awareness, recruit new puppy raisers and volunteers and support one another’s work on behalf of the Canine Companions’ mission. This Chapter is a lively network filled with opportunities for social engagement from puppy classes to fundraisers. Beyond the satisfaction of doing good work for Canine Companions, lifelong friendships are often formed among chapter members.

The benefits of having a service dog can be indescribable, often life-changing.

Canine Companions provides dogs for an array of disabilities; they o er service dogs for adults, children and veterans with a physical or auditory disability or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education settings. The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year.

In recent years, Yucca, a Facility Dog, became a new furry member of the Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead, NY (placed by Canine Companions). She helps students learn responsibility, come out of their shell and even helps those that experience issues at home, such as past traumas or emotional/social issues.

“Having a dog there to just talk to or pet can really help the children,” explained teacher Emilee Raynor. “Yucca loves our

students and they know she is not judging them, so they take more risks when working with her than with their peers.”

Yucca is incorporated into daily lessons, such as language practice, when students read to her and describe the commands Yucca is following. “I have already seen the huge impact that Facility Dog Yucca has made in the classroom. Students are so excited to come to class. They work hard for Yucca and understand their responsibilities.”

Yucca’s impact is among countless success stories. If you are looking to make a di erence, you can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love.

Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

Nicholas Sullivan was celebrated as Boy Scout Troop 399’s 71st Eagle Scout at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Saturday, January 7th, 2022. The Court of Honor recognizes a Boy Scout’s promotion to Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout signifies a scout’s hard work, leadership, and determination. The recipient must earn at least 21 merit badges, provide leadership, and serve the local community and society. Scouts are required to complete a capstone project that benefits their

community in order to be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Mr. Sullivan completed his Eagle Scout Project in March of 2022. He built a Free Book Exchange Mobile Library Bookcase for Woods Road Elementary School in North Babylon. He filled the bookcase with donated books and presented it to Principal Archer. His goal is to improve community youth literacy.

Boy Scout Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, NY, and a member of the Sagtikos District of the

Boy Scouts of America’s Suffolk County Council.

Troop 399 is sponsored by the North Babylon Lions Club. Honoring North Babylon ‘Arrow Of Light’ Cub Scouts

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, (D-Deer Park) recently joined with Town of Babylon Councilman

Terry McSweeney to recognize 17 North Babylon Cub Scouts who earned the “Arrow of Light” award, the highest honor in Cub Scouting.

Cub Scout Pack 112 members Dominic Argutto, Alexander Canosa, Logan Cook, Dylan Denes, Matthew Lasorsa, Jason Levinson, Nico Lombardo, Wilhabelle Louis-Jean, Owen Ortlieb, Logan Panetta, Kyle Rizzo, Thomas Tierney, Vincent Velez and Connor Webster, under the direction of

Pack 112 Cubmaster Louis Cook, earned the Arrow of Light awards. They received commendations from the elected officials at ceremonies held during the Blue and Gold dinner on February 11 at the Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in Calverton.

“I congratulate the dedicated members of North Babylon Cub Scout Pack 112 who worked hard to earn their Arrow of Light awards,” said Legislator Donnelly. “This a momentous occasion in their lives and I wish them the best as they continue their commitment to serving the community and others.”
