On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, Town of Babylon officials were joined by the founders of P.S. I Love You Day, Brooke and Jaimie DiPalma, local school officials, and residents for a press conference

discussing the importance of the day, held the second Friday of February each year. After the DiPalma sisters lost their father to suicide, they started P.S.

I Love You Day with the mission of supporting

Commit To College Sports

ROBERT MOSES CLUB PROMOTES REUSE, RENEW, RECYCLE - In the North Babylon School District, the Robert Moses Middle School EnvironmentalRecycling Club members spearheaded a project to recycle used sneakers. The club oversaw promoting the project, collecting the sneakers from the classes, counting the sneakers, and boxing up the sneakers to be given to Nike. Nike then grinds the sneakers down and turns them into different surfaces such as tracks, playgrounds, tennis courts and much more. The project at Robert Moses collected nearly 100 sneakers that would have otherwise gone into landfills. Since 1990, Nike’s program has collected more than 28 million shoes for recycling. In addition, Nike has placed Reuse-A-Shoe bins in all its U.S. retail stores including the Deer Park Tanger Outlet store. Photo courtesy of North Babylon School District

Watching the transition to adulthood brings upon many mixed emotions for the parent of any child. One of the deep concerns for parents of children with disabilities is how their child will succeed as they mature into adults. Will they live a productive life? Will they be able to support themselves and have independence? Will they be able to experience the beauty of accomplishments and achievements? Will they have a great quality of life?

An important consideration is employment. Meaningful employment gives a sense of pride and allows one to contribute to society in a significant way. It also provides financial stability and helps people fulfill their goals and dreams. Sadly, statistics show that about 80% of adults with disabilities are unemployed, and those who are employed are often underemployed.

The Corporate Source (TCS) is a nonprofit organization based in Garden City. They have been fulfilling their mission for 26 years, which is to promote employment opportunities for people with disabilities and to provide services leading to independence and fulfillment.

TCS is both an employer and service provider, with employees in the NY Metro area, Long Island, the Albany Capital Region, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the USVI. 85% of their direct labor have some type of a disability, including intellectual and developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, physical disabilities or other medical impairments, visual and hearing impairments, or mental health di culties that qualify as a disability under government regulations.

TCS provides outsourcing services in several areas including facilities management, janitorial, mail-room and courier services, switchboard operations and kennel attendants. Candidates for employment are referred to TCS from many sources, such as the Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) services which is o ered through the

New York State Education Department and the Veteran’s Administration (VA).TCS also takes referrals from private agencies, local school districts, vocational training programs o ered through the Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) and more.

TCS has proudly adapted their hiring process to accommodate people with disabilities. Once an application is completed, candidates have an interview and short skills assessment to determine if the job is an appropriate match. Specialized training or prior experience is helpful, but TCS will absolutely train qualified candidates. Once on the job, The Corporate South can provide job support when and where it is needed or collaborate with job coaches from other organizations to promote the best chances of success on the job. Another special service that this organization o ers to their employees, as well as to outside referrals, is what they call “benefits counseling”, which is where certified benefits counselors provide meaningful advice to adults, youth and veterans.

Town Of Babylon Dedicates Courtroom To Beloved Judge

The Town of Babylon recently honored the late Judge Toni A. Bean, a second district court judge and impactful community member, with a courtroom dedication at the North Amityville Municipal Building. A ceremony and plaque unveiling recognized the work and dedication of the lifelong Amityville resident who possessed a storied legal career, including establishing her own legal practice in Amityville in 1982, before being appointed and then elected to the Suffolk County District Court bench in 2004. She sat as Acting County Court Judge in the

domestic violence sector from 2012-2015 and again from 2020 until her death, winning three elections and planning to run a vigorous re-election campaign as the second-most senior district court judge.

“Judge Bean and I first met in 1985 through the Amityville School Board,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

“We began our friendship, both professional and personal, and it is one I will always remember and cherish.”

Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Suffolk County Legislator Jason Richberg, Deputy Suffolk County Executive Vanessa Baird-Streeter, Honorable Judge Andrew A. Crecca, Town of Babylon Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Madeline Quintyne-McConney, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, Memorial Presbyterian Church Reverend Scott Williams, Grace Community Church Pastor Reverend Alexia Burgess-Huart and Judge Bean’s sisters —Dr. Jane Ann Bean-Folkes and Amityville Union Free School District Board President Lisa Johnson. Susan Quintyne delivered a powerful tribute through song and was joined by the rest of the room.

In addition to her judgeship, Judge Bean was a valued community member, serving as the chairperson of the North Amityville Housing and Rehabilitation Association, a former trustee of the Amityville School Board, a former committee member of the Town of Babylon Democratic Committee and a life-long member of the Central Long Island Branch of the NAACP and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She was heavily involved with career day programs at schools throughout

the Town of Babylon— especially in Amityville—as well as the Advisory Board of the Town of Babylon Ujima Committee, the Town of Babylon Youth Court Advisory Committee and the North Amityville Community Parade and Festival Day. Her numerous accolades include being the 2019 NAACP Gala Honoree and receiving the Friend of Education Award by the Amityville Teachers’ Association, the Community Advocate Award by the North Amityville Economic Council, the Woman of Distinction Award by the Holy Trinity Baptist Church Scholarship Committee,

the Senate Proclamation for Community Service from State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., the Honorable Marquette L. Floyd Achievement Award from the courts and a plethora of others from local and state associations and elected officials.

“When Toni became involved in something, she was involved. She was committed,” said her sister Lisa Johnson. “It was not to say I am a member of this organization or that organization. She did the job through and through no matter what, and that is the message I want to give to you today about my sister, Toni.”

BACCA (Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts) invites poets and visual artists to participate in Ekphrastic and Back, a cross-media event in which poets and visual artists will use the opposite medium for inspiration.

Ekphrasis means “Description” in Greek. An ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the “action” of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning. Poets and visual artists are encouraged to submit original work inspired by a piece of their choosing from the opposite medium:

• Poets are asked to choose a visual arts piece to inform/inspire their writing.

• Artists are asked to choose a poem or prose to inform/inspire their visual arts piece.

In lieu of a fee, poets and artists may make a suggested donation of $10 to BACCA, or they may become a BACCA member.

Ten poets and ten visual artists will be chosen to display their work, both poems and art pieces, for a one-night event on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 from 7 PM to 10 PM in the BACCA Arts Center at 149 N. Wellwood Ave. Lindenhurst, NY. Poets will have the opportunity to read their poetry during the event. Additionally, one poet and one artist will be selected to create original pieces throughout the evening. About BACCA

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 27, 2023 and Sunday, May 28, 2023. This will be the demonstration team’s 9th performance at the Bethpage Air Show.

It was announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention yesterday that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the United States Marine Corps F35B Lighting II will be performing, along with the world famous Skytpers, Long Island’s David Windmiller and Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot.

“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday and Sunday weekend shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island for our 2023 show!”

It was also announced that the United States Navy Blue Angels will return as headliners for the special 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024.
