On Friday, July 21st, for the 10th consecutive year, thousands rode through the streets of Babylon alongside proud veterans to support wounded service members. This year’s event had over 1,500 riders participate alongside more than 50 wounded Veterans. Since the first Soldier Ride in 2008, over $750,000 has been raised for injured service members. The Town of Babylon is proud to announce that 50% of the funds raised at this year’s Soldier Ride with go directly to Suffolk County United Veteran (SCUV), a project of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. Adam Faine, the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride Manger, presented Matias Ferreira with an official Wounded Warrior Cycling Jersey and he was also presented with a Proclamation from Supervisor Schaffer. Mr. Ferreira, a former Marine who lost both legs in Afghanistan, became a Suffolk County Police officer in March of 2017. Continued From 4 struggles veterans face when returning from combat. Mr. Pauley was deployed to Tal Afar, Iraq where he was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) which sent shrapnel into his right arm above the elbow. Also speaking were Councilwoman and Veteran Jackie Gordon and County Executive Steve Bellone. The Wounded Warrior Project provides services to service members, in both the United States and internationally, who have been injured during combat and works to raise awareness regarding issues that affect them as they continue to adjust to their new life.

A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

I have discussed the difference between direct cremation and a traditional funeral with cremation instead of burial. I have previously discussed the relationship of the Catholic Church and cremation. On March 21, 1997, the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments granted the indult requested by the American Bishops to permit the Diocesan Bishop to allow the presence of the cremated remains of the body at the Funeral Liturgy in the Dioceses of the United States. The new ritual adaptations became mandatory on November 2, 1997 in the Diocese of the United States.

Before you read this series of articles, I want you to understand that I am interpreting information I have received from the United States Catholic Conference, Office of Worship of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the Liturgical Press. I strongly recommend you discuss the concept of cremation and interment with a priest at your church. He will answer all of your questions and explain the pastoral differences between cremation and interment. We have all heard, “Catholics are not allowed to cremate”. This is simply not true. Canonical prohibition against cremation was lifted in 1963 on the eve of the Second Vatical Council by the authority of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (then the Holy Office). Since 1963, cremation of the deceased has become an acceptable alternative to interment PROVIDING cremation was not chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teachings. Permission for cremation would be denied only when it is based on secretariat spirit, hatred of the Catholic religion or the Church, or a denial of Christian Doctrine. However, “The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed.” The reason interment of the deceased is preferred over cremation is fundamentally one of pastoral care. The young lady was on her feet quite a bit at SSCM’s Awards Ceremony, earning a Parents Association Scholarship, an award for Altar Service and one for Excellence in Music. The highlight of the day came when Theresa was named as the recipient of SSCM’s Cyrillian Award,
a unique honor for the student hand-selected by SSCM’s Principal, Sister Susan Snyder, and based on all around academics and service. Theresa’s name will be added to the names of former recipients of the honor, on a commemorative plaque, which hangs in the halls of the school for posterity. Patrick Vierling graduated from Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School in June with awards and scholarships galore! There were no surprises here considering Patrick’s history of academic excellence paired with his commitment to community service. This ambitious young man has been on the short path toward success throughout his years at SSCM,
from his kindergarten days through his involvement in SSCM’s 8th grade accelerated algebra program. Patrick has been an active member of SSCM parish and school community, serving as an Altar Server for several years and acting in a volunteer capacity at every major SSCM event, from Parish Outreach food drives to Breakfasts with Santa.
In addition to his academic success, Patrick has rounded out his thrust for learning and community time with a healthy dose of athletics, having enjoyed three years on SSCM’s Cross Country Team throughout his middle school years. He was also a member of SSCM’s Shakespeare troupe, a member of SSCM’s Distinguished Scholars, and was in the Gifted and Talented Program at SSCM. With his choice of high school acceptance at Holy Trinity, St. Anthony’s and St. John the Baptist High School, Patrick will be happy to attend St. John the Baptist in the fall, having earned a Coop Scholarship based on his CHSEE (Catholic High School Entrance Exam) scores! If that weren’t enough, Patrick also managed to capture several other honors, including an SSCM Senior Citizens Scholarship, awards for Altar Service and Excellence in Social Studies, a Parents Association Scholarship and the Monsignor Rooney Scholarship from the Holy Name Society. King Kullen and its full-service natural food marketplace, Wild by Nature, recently helped raise funds to benefit three organizations providing services to children with disabilities. The annual “Brighter Future for Children with Disabilities” campaign encouraged customers to donate at the check-out counter, with King Kullen rounding the amount raised to $9,000 to be
divided equally among The Viscardi Center and the Nassau County and Suffolk County Chapters of AHRC. King Kullen CoPresidents Brian C. Cullen and J.
