In what made for a joyous and celebratory event, family members, friends and educators packed Babylon High School’s Coach Williams Memorial Field for the Class of 2013 commencement ceremony on June 22nd. Following members of the U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Color Guard, the American Celtic Pipe Band and high school administrators and teachers, soon-to-be graduates were aglow with smiles as they proceeded to their seats on the field. The ceremony began with opening remarks from Assistant Principal Steven Goldberg, as well

as a salute to the flag by Senior Class President Genevieve Gravina and Vice President Alex Malhas. Genevieve and Student Council President Carolanne Murphy offered reflective speeches to their classmates, while Principal Al Cirone and Mr. Goldberg offered words of praise for students’ successes and optimism for their future. BACCA Award Winners The West Babylon Junior High School art department is pleased to congratulate the winners of the 2013 Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts Art Show. This was BACCA’s 24th annual art show competition, in which students were rewarded for

the work they produced in a myriad of media, including acrylics, watercolors, charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, oils, graphics and mixed media. Receiving awards in the grade 5-8 category were studio art students Camilla Lyczko, who placed third, Christina

Capobianco, who placed first and earned an honorable mention, and Ivy Greco, who placed second. The show ran from May 28th through June 7th and culminated in an awards reception to honor the winners at the Old Town Hall in Babylon.

Mr. Rozakis discussed how graduation for students is a major change, but that change is a sign of growth and progress. “When you leave here today, you will be graduates of the Class of 2013,” he said. “That’s a huge change — one of the first big milestones of a very long and prosperous life.” Following speeches from students, administrators and educators, students took to the dais one by one to receive their diplomas. Several graduating students also joined their fellow musicians to perform a number of selections with the school’s chorus and band. The ceremony closed with the traditional release of white doves, symbolizing a hopeful future for the graduates, who marked their first moments as alumni by tossing their caps into the air.

Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny

how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of

our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

Spangled Banner before several speakers imparted some words of advice onto the graduates. “Moving up day is a tradition,” Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis told the students. “Traditions are important because they remind us of where we came and who we are now, and help us feel confident as we move forward into the future.” Noting the students’ readiness to move up to the high school, he added, “Babylon is a unique and special school district. You have received an excellent foundation on which you will now build remarkable high school careers. Each and every one of you has your own special skills, talents and dreams. I am confident that your high school years will be productive, enjoyable and very, very successful. Let’s all work hard to make these dreams come true together.” In addition to the warm words of congratulations from Mr. Rozakis, the students listened attentively as two peers reflected on the memories they have made over the past three years and the dreams they collectively share for their futures. PTA President Heather Tenety also offered her praise. Members of the class performed a moving version of Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” that left everyone in the audience in awe. When his or her name was called, each class member crossed the stage to shake the hands of the district administrators and Board of Education members in attendance and receive their moving up certificates. Before concluding the ceremony with the Grade School’s alma mater, Babylon Junior-Senior High School Principal Al Cirone and Assistant Principal Steven Goldberg welcomed the students to their new school.

The Babylon School District Board of Education has appointed Steven Goldberg as the new principal of Babylon Memorial Grade School, effective July 1st. Mr. Goldberg is a familiar face within the school district, having served as assistant principal at Babylon Junior-Senior High School for nine years and the principal of the junior high school from 2009-2011. Mr. Goldberg is entering his 24th year in the field of education. He began as

a permanent substitute for math and science in the Massapequa School District before taking on an administrative role as a guidance counselor in the Sewanhaka School District. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology/science, a master’s in school counseling, and SAS and SDA certificates in school administration. He has been an adjunct professor at Long Island University for the past 13 years.

First-graders in Debbie LoSardo’s class at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently explored a variety of sea life during the Seashore Safari that took place in their classroom. The hands-on lesson gave students the opportunity to use their five senses and interact with animals, allowing them to feel the

pinchers of a horseshoe crab, hum to mud snails in an effort to coax them out of their shells, race sea stars and let hermit crabs tickle their palms. The students also discussed several facts about their experiences and wrote stories about one of the animals they had observed based on what they had learned.

Following four years, 728 school days, 5,096 school hours and 305,760 school minutes, the 402 members of the North Babylon High School Class of 2013 gathered together one final time as a class on June 22nd to celebrate the school’s annual commencement exercises. Members of the Board of Education, administration, teachers, special guests, parents and friends surrounded the students as they prepared to collect their high school diplomas and move their tassels from left to right. With the sun shining down on the graduates, the students listened as they received words of advice from Town of Babylon Supervisor and NBHS alumnus Richard Schaffer, Superintendent of Schools Patricia Godek, Principal Raymond A. Williams, and social studies teacher and faculty speaker Erin Casserly. The students also reminisced on days gone by and the years to come as valedictorian Brian Manzo, salutatorian Katherine Schneider and senior class presidents Ashley Levine and Aubree Surrency delivered their addresses. “Your high school graduation is a pivotal moment because it is both a beginning and an end,” remarked Mrs. Godek. “High school’s been a time for learning, developing character, fostering social awareness and strengthening friendships. What you have learned has been important, but what have you learned about yourself?” Added Mr. Williams, “Wisdom, courage and compassion together are the foundations for a good and productive life.
