West Babylon High School student-artist Anna Fleury was named the first-place winner in Riverhead’s East End Arts Gallery art “Composition” competition. Her artwork titled “Red Roof” is a
photo on canvas and an aerial view of the Fire Island Lighthouse. Her work will be on view from June 20th through August 1st. Anna, a sophomore, is a student in Heather
Korchma’s Drawing and Painting II class and Christine Iaquinto’s Photo II class. She will continue her art studies in Ms. Korchma’s Advanced Placement Studio class this fall.

The athletic achievements of Babylon High School students Colin Godfrey and Ashley Lucas were recognized during the district’s midJune Board of Education meeting. The district’s administration, Board of Education and athletic department congratulated the winning track stars for their outstanding post-season honors and presented them with certificates of recognition. Colin earned third place in the long jump and 10th place in the high jump at this year’s NYSPHSAA Division II Track and Field Championship, as well as All-State honors. Ashley earned third place in the 100-meter dash and fifth place in the 200-meter dash at this year’s NYSPHSAA Division II Track and Field Championships, All-State Honors and the Good Sportsmanship Award.

Babylon Memorial Grade School sixth-grade students had the chance to construct and launch their own rockets as part of a gradelevel interdisciplinary unit of study. The project, which tied into the students’ science and math curriculum, focused on the properties of a rocket, the impact wind speed, wind direction and weight have on the flying object as well as the conditions needed to ensure flight. They also discussed the NASA rocket launch program and selected a day for their simulation that mirrored the official process. After constructing
their original rockets and associated parachute, each student took a turn at sailing it high into the sky off a launching pad on the back field of the school. The students participated in a debriefing exercise with their teachers after the launch – discussing what conditions contributed to some rockets not launching and sharing what they would have done differently with the experiment. Incorporating their English Language Arts skills, the students then reflected on the entire process through a short writing assignment.

West Babylon Senior High School seniors Nicole Cutrone and Julie Barrett have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Class of 2014. Each is an exceptional student whose academic achievement is equaled by her athletic, co-curricular and philanthropic pursuits. With a 109 grade point average, Nicole maintains that her personality is partly behind her academic success. “With my personality, I was never able to slack off. It mattered that I did the work,” she said. “It is really nice to know that all my hard work has been validated.” Nicole is a National Advanced Placement
Scholar and a Board of Regents Scholarship recipient. As a member of the Science Olympiad team, she placed in three regional competition events and acquired fourth and fifth place at the New York State competition. The Town of Babylon recently granted Nicole an Historical Society scholarship for top scores in history. Nicole is a member of the Leaders Club, where she organizes and participates in local fundraisers, and the Leo Club, which focuses on community service and local charities. She is editor of the Yearbook Club and a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the Vincent Foley Foreign
Language and math and science honor societies. Nicole has been a member of the field hockey team during all four years of high school and has received two varsity letters for her achievements on the field. She also volunteers at the library, where she teaches young children how to read, and tutors peers in math. Nicole will attend Fordham University, where she will pursue her studies in biology. With a 108.5 grade point average, Julie received the rank of class salutatorian. Like Nicole, she explained that hard work is the key to being one of the top students. “There are students who are smarter, but did not take the time to do homework or to work hard,” Julie said. “Doing the work everyday is the key to success.” Julie is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and the recipient of a Board of Regents scholarship. She is a member of the National Honor Society

The Babylon IDA awarded ten Town of Babylon students with a $1,000 vocational scholarship. Chief Executive Officer Robert Stricoff spoke to the crowd and commended the students and their families on their outstanding academic achievements. The Babylon IDA wants to encourage the continuation of education for the students and provide them with the means to do so. Supervisor Schaffer presented Sister Alice with
an official Town of Babylon proclamation to thank her for many years of dedicated service and for creating the church vegetable garden, which provides fresh produce for the church outreach food pantry. In her service with the church, Sister Alice served on numerous committees and led several successful parish missions.

Inspiration. It can come from anywhere. A song. A movie. A book. A beautiful sunset. A peaceful walk along the shoreline. Anywhere. As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on
Facebook (see above). It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers. Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life. Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience

Wearing colorful shirts inscribed with their promotion year, Babylon Elementary School secondgrade students took part in a moving-up ceremony in June. As their name was announced, each student
proudly walked to the front of the gymnasium and was congratulated by Principal Jessica Kemler. They concluded the milestone occasion by joining together in song, performing a number of selections.
Later that afternoon, the students participated in a variety of spirited field day events and celebrated their promotion to Babylon Memorial Grade School together.

Soccer Marathon proceeds to sick children and their families from local communities to help defray medical costs. This year the tournament raised close to $30,000 which was split with the Ryans and two other
families. Taylor suffers from Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, a rare debilitating neurodegenerative disease which effects 1 in 200,000 children.
Guiding Visitors
Babylon High School student Timothy Martin recently received his Eagle Scout ranking – the highest rank attainable in the Boy
Scouting program – after completing a thorough application process and an extensive service project. With the help of the
Babylon Village Historical Society and several elected and village officials, Timothy creating a walking tour video showcasing 18 historically significant sites located in Babylon. The video has been made available on YouTube and will be used in the education center for the Babylon Village Historical Society. Future plans for the effort are being considered, which include transforming the video into a mobile phone application that guides people through the village and shows them videos and pictures of the points of interest.

Batting For A Cause Starting Saturday, June 14th at 8 a.m., Mike Filippone batted baseballs for 24 hours until 8 a.m. on June 15th at Sawyer Avenue Park in West Babylon. His goal was to set a new Guinness World Record but also to raise money for the Dan Gambardella Memorial Fund. Dan was both a coach and a friend to many in North Babylon
who was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Dan’s wife Linda started this fund in his memory as a way to help families who were going through a crisis of their own. The money was raised throughout the day and night by people who bought buckets of baseballs to pitch to him, raffles donated by local shops, T-shirts advertising the event and food sold.
Mike fought heroically all 24 hours, and even though his body was physically exhausted, his heart and mind would not let him quit. Mike wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of his family, friends and the community who stayed with him through all of the 24 hours.
