Everything Old Is New Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So did everyone get what you wanted for Christmas this year? Aside from the pleasure of each other’s company, of course… I asked for a combination DVD/VCR player – one of those retro, bordering-onobsolete creations that I personally feel should be a staple of every household. How else can you view all those old home movies and classic Disney videos? And, in my case, about 20 years’

worth of dance recital recordings… Add to that the fact that, given the option, I would much rather watch a DVD movie rental on a ﬂat screen TV as opposed to my computer monitor. Sure, I realize most people stream media on their laptops nowadays; but I’m not most people, and I would like to have the option of viewing movies on something larger than a smartphone. Hence, my request for this outdated piece of machinery, the gift

that keeps on giving, allowing us the pleasure of reliving those timeless memories on a larger scale. Priceless, if you ask me. So once the winter weather settles in and hibernation starts looking awfully appealing, I plan to fire up the old (new) machine and have myself a minimarathon of movies, TV series I’ve been meaning to catch up on – and of course those classic dance routines. Stony Brook University held its 17th Annual December commencement ceremony today in the newly renovated Island Federal Credit Union Arena, where 1,571 students had their degrees conferred. The new graduates, which range in age from 20–77, joined approximately 150,000 of their predecessors around the globe whose lives and work personify the Stony Brook University mission. During his commencement address, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., spoke about the tradition of graduation, the increasing value of a Stony Brook degree, and reinforced the competitive advantages and opportunities that Stony Brook graduates will have as they enter new chapters in their lives. “Recently some have questioned the value of a college degree, have stated that a college education may not be worth its cost. Let me make it very clear. Your investment in your Stony Brook degree will be one of the best investments you (and your family) ever

made,” said President Stanley. “In addition to earning higher wages,” he continued, “college graduates are more likely to find jobs than those who didn’t attend college. Your decision to attend and receive a degree from Stony Brook University means you are on a path towards a better life, and I congratulate you on that choice and your future.” President Stanley also encouraged students to keep in touch with mentors and professors who helped graduates achieve academic success. He urged students not to “lose these valued mentors, as they can continue to play an important role in your life, a wonderful source for counsel, free advice, and those ever so important recommendations.” He continued to reassure graduates that “wherever in the world you end up, know that we are proud of you, and that you will always have a home at Stony Brook University.” At the ceremony, remarks were also delivered by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-

NY) and student speaker, Danielle DeSantis, who received a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology. DeSantis, selected by a committee of staff and faculty from a pool of submitted speeches provided through the annual senior speaker competition, shared her thoughts about her years as a Seawolf and offered the following advice to her fellow graduates: “…Go find your mountain! Go see what’s beyond this wave of life, and howl to the world ‘I am a Seawolf!’ … Stony Brook gave us our sea, and now we need to take the reins into our own hands and see what is past the waves of college.“ Next month, DesSantis will begin classes toward the pursuit of a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Administration at Stony Brook University. The money was raised during the New York School Bus Contractors annual convention held in October in Port Jefferson. This world famous tradition dates back to 1904, when the New York Times relocated to what was then known as Longacre Square. Helping Neighbors In Need Giving back at any age is a way of life for the Lots of Love Club, a team of community volunteers from Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community. The dozen or so members of the club, who reside in the skilled nursing and assisted living accommodations at Jefferson’s Ferry, regularly raise funds to make donations to various not for profit organizations in the surrounding communities. The club’s effort is twofold. First, the club holds a fundraiser on the premises of Jefferson’s Ferry, selling items that they have made to residents, employees and visitors. They have, for example sold homemade baked goods, chocolate dipped pretzels and holiday ornaments. With the

proceeds, the club then purchases items to donate to a local charity. “The Lots of Love Club is incredibly dedicated and resourceful,” said Jennifer Barrett, director of therapeutic recreation at the Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry, who works with the group. “They don’t let age or ability stand in the way of contributing to those in need. They raise every dime and spread their generosity around the community.” This month, Lots of Love is selling a uniform-clad snowman tree ornament to support Operation Calling Card, which distributes overseas calling cards to members of the military deployed overseas. Operation Calling Card holds particular resonance with the club this year, as

they recently lost one of the club’s founders, who was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. Ms. Barrett recently transported the Lots of Love Club to Walmart so that they could purchase baby care products such as diapers and wipes to donate to Riverhead’s Life Touch, which helps single mothers. The club has also donated boxes of food to the St. Gerard food pantry in Port Jefferson, made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a shelter in Bay Shore, and bought school supplies for Little Flower Children and Family Services. In summary, Ms. Barrett said, “The Lots of Love Club makes the spirit of holiday giving a year round commitment.”

Each year, Catholic Health Services (CHS) seeks nominations from its staff for the Patrick J. Scollard Award for Leadership. This year’s winner of CHS’s highest honor is Richard C. Bie, licensed professional engineer and assistant vice president, plant engineering for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip. Chosen from among colleagues across CHS, he was recognized at the system’s 11th annual leadership conference, held at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale. “Richard’s commitment to Catholic Health Service’s mission is apparent in both word and deed,” said CHS President and Chief Executive Officer Alan D. Guerci, MD. “He is dedicated to assuring that those who seek care are provided the best possible environment.” Bie has spent the better part of his career applying his unique skills and talents to the health care industry, including the last five years with Good Samaritan. There, he implemented energy efficiency processes throughout the hospital such as operational changes to shut off equipment during unoccupied hours, a house-wide steam trap maintenance and repair program, expansion of a central chilled water distribution system, and replacement of older lighting within the main hospital and off-sites with newer, more efficient LED lighting. Also, he collaborates with others throughout the facility in planning for and addressing complex challenges to improve results, leading to significant cost savings, simpler processes and quicker response times.

Top Leaders Bie lives in Hauppauge with his wife Suzanne, and their three children Jennifer, Jimmy and Kevin. One of the two leading finalists for the Patrick J. Scollard Award is Antoinette Jordan, RN, from St. Francis Hospital, the Heart Center®, Flower Hill. She is the nurse manager of the hospital’s intensive care unit. Jordan supports nurse hand-off communication at the bedside, fostering patient and family education and has worked hard to establish a culture of safety. In addition to her leadership skills, Jordan’s clinical achievements are notable. Under her guidance, her unit

achieved the Gold Level Beacon Award in Critical Care in 2013. Also, Jordan volunteers at a local nursing home coordinating recreational activities for residents and visits sick parishioners. To support the efforts of a nonprofit organization providing free medical treatment to families in Jamaica, West Indies who cannot afford health care, she traveled there to lend nursing expertise

and to live the CHS mission to “advocate for the poor and underserved.” Jordan lives in Hempstead with her husband, Denroy Morris. The other leading finalist for this notable honor is New Hyde Park resident Mary Ellen Conrad, director of the Nassau Day Programs and Supported Housing, from Maryhaven Center of Hope, Port Jefferson. For more than 30 years, she has been a proponent of the CHS mission, developing, implementing and sustaining one of the largest mental health service delivery systems in Nassau County. Her career began when there was little funding to operate programs, so she had to creatively staff and run with both quality and efficiency. Having identified a need for residences for those with a mental health diagnosis as well as an intellectual or developmental disability, she presented the idea to administration.
