The completed piece, which included a colorful house, trees and many decorations, was donated to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook as a holiday decoration. The students teamed up with several other classes to create holiday cards for the residents.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joined Community Housing Innovations (CHI) in launching the organization’s Fresh Start program. In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, this initiative allows the public to directly help the homeless through purchases of Bed Bath & Beyond® gift cards through a special toll-free number; 844-52-I-CARE. As part of the kickoff for this program, Mr. Bellone presented the Harris family with the first-ever CHI Fresh Startfunded $100 Bed Bath & Beyond® gift card, which he personally purchased as a gift. Mr. Bellone and CHI are encouraging the public to follow suit, especially during the holiday season.

“The holiday season is an especially important time to realize that we’re all part of a larger family and we’re

all going through tough times,” said Mr. Bellone.

“There are things that happen in life that create difficult circumstances and that’s when the community matters. We’re all in this together; we need to work together and support one another. I don’t know a better time to do this than during the holiday season.

That’s why it’s great to be here with this wonderful family. I’m proud to be a part of this.”

CHI also secured housing for the Harrises, a family of five – including children aged five, 16 and 17. The family signed the lease on the house in Bellport, New York during Thursday’s press conference with Mr. Bellone. The Harrises, who have been without a home for 14 months due to no-fault job loss and a sudden rent increase more than 30 percent, will move into their new house today, just in time to enjoy the holidays.

“It’s always hard to deal with homelessness; this is my first time going through this,” added Nathaniel Harris, father of the family.

“It’s really embarrassing when you struggle even though you work so hard.

I worked all of my life. So, to receive this opportunity, that somebody heard me, actually heard me, is amazing. I appreciate everybody who participated in making this happen for me. Thank you so much.”

As the largest provider of housing for the homeless in suburban New York, CHI connected with Mr. Bellone and the team at Bed Bath & Beyond to encourage individuals, families and businesses alike to purchase gift cards. One hundred percent of this anonymous, tax-deductible donation will be given to a family or individual currently living in a local shelter in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess and Orange Counties

Winter weather and storms will soon be here…

My First Christmas ‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about.

I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion.

Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…

I decided I had better get something to show my appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude!

Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some flashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting!

My human has promised me

a proper shopping spree after the new year, and I can’t wait.

Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go.

No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of flakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades.

All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle!

The World Stage Setauket Elementary School students in Lisa Wall’s fourth-grade class showcased their talents on an international level this year as they competed in the World Education Games, powered by 3P Learning in association with UNICEF. Over the course of three days, the students completed challenge questions in the areas of

literacy, mathematics and science. These focused on creating independent learning and critical spelling awareness; math fluency, as well as reasoning and problem solving; and interactive, virtual science experiments through digitally simulated real world environments.

Together, 21 students from Mrs. Wall’s class answered 5,393 questions.

The program, which is the world’s largest free online education competition, is held every two years and provides students with enriching opportunities to engage in activities aligned with the academic standards.

More than six million students from 20,000 schools in 159 countries were registered in this year’s competition.

Volunteers with special needs lent their helping hands at Camp Pa-QuaTuck on December 11th.

AHRC workshop students checked off windowwashing, bathroom cleaning and general housekeeping duties from

their to-do lists as they worked cheerfully for the good of the camp.

Friday was AHRC’s second time working in tandem with the camp. Russell Smith, an instructor at AHRC, said the two organizations

began working together via a suggestion from the camp’s Treasurer, Newt Homan, who works for Suffolk County Transportation, transporting the AHRC students.

Many of the volunteers have a personal connection with the camp, looking back fondly to the days when they attended summer sessions. “My favorite parts of camp were dancing, the talent shows and the camp fires,” said Crystal Concepion, a first-time volunteer, who plans to return and help the camp prepare for winter in the coming weeks.

Camp Director Bridget Costello hopes to expand the volunteer program to former campers outside of AHRC to further foster the connection between camp and camper.

The Miller Place High School music department was recently recognized as a GRAMMY Foundation Semi-Finalist for its outstanding commitment to music education during an academic school year.

As a semifinalist, the school is one of 119 schools nationwide in the running to receive a grant to support the music program. The school’s Symphonic Band,

Orchestra and Select Chorus have recorded audition tapes for consideration during the next round.

The GRAMMY Foundation was established in 1988 to cultivate the understanding, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of recorded music to American culture - from the artistic and

technical legends of the past to the still unimagined musical breakthroughs of future generations of music professionals.

The Foundation accomplishes this mission through programs and activities that engage the music industry and cultural community, including students, as well as the general public.

The Edna Louise Spear Elementary School Guidance Department also held a successful gift drive.

program yielded donations of coats, boots and toys for 24 Port Jefferson children. Also assisting in the effort was the Port Jefferson Fire Department.

The organization donated funds to help purchase additional wish list items.

For the past ten years, Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community residents have rolled up their sleeves and donned aprons for the annual Thanksgiving feast to kick off the holiday season with 5th grade students of Setauket Elementary school, and this year was no exception.

Every year, as part of Jefferson’s Ferry’s Intergenerational Program, Jefferson’s Ferry Director of Therapeutic Recreation Jennifer Barrett and Setauket Elementary SPREADING MAGIC - Earl L. For many of the children, it’s their first time undertaking such a large cooking task and for the residents, the joy, excitement and energy of their youthful companions help to bring the nostalgia of holiday tradition to their homes at Jefferson’s Ferry.

After all the preparations have been completed, everyone sits down family style to enjoy the tasty rewards of their labor, as well as share the things they are thankful for and reminisce about their own memories and traditions.

“Our feast is one of the most special events held at Jefferson’s Ferry all year long,” said Ms. Barrett. “The nostalgia and emotion brought out by this display of team work, as well as the sharing of the meal, is overwhelmingly beautiful.”

Jefferson’s Ferry’s Intergenerational Program brings Setauket Elementary fifth graders and residents together for monthly activities, both at the school and at Jefferson’s Ferry over the course of the school year.

This marks the tenth year of the program.

Shaping a Village Setauket Elementary School fourth-grade students in Lisa Wall’s class recently worked as architects and decorators as they collaboratively helped create a Gingerbread

Village.

The completed piece, which included a colorful house, trees and many decorations, was donated to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony

Brook as a holiday decoration. The students teamed up with several other classes at Setauket to create holiday cards for the residents as well.

Santa came to visit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on Sunday, December 13th, bringing with him the joy of the season – and pancakes!

Everyone had a smile on, thanks to the green and red decorations and the pretty Christmas tree.

While volunteers served breakfast, Santa and Mrs. Claus asked the kids what they wanted for Christmas and gave out candy canes.

The fundraiser benefited Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a summer camp and weekend respite for children and young adults with extra physical and mental needs.

Many families attended the breakfast, which was run by The Moriches Rotary Club and staffed by volunteer students from organizations like the Interact Club at the Center Moriches School.

One young student, Isabella Burke, shared her experience as a waitress for the fundraiser: “It makes you feel bigger, like

you’re doing something important,” she said. “It’s fun!”

Over 300 guests were served a pancake breakfast and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. Children and families were also invited to visit with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, during which time they could have their pictures taken with the couple.

“This year’s breakfast went much smoother than in previous years,” noted event coordinator Maureen Klersy of the Moriches Rotary. “It was faster, more fluid and less congested because we reorganized the workflow. I think guests were a lot happier with the service.”

As the breakfast crowd began to thin out, the Moriches Rotary took the chance to share some happy news and announced the addition of two new members; Laura Traina and John Gruber were applauded and congratulated on their

acceptance into the rotary.

Moriches Rotary and other community organizations help make Camp Pa-QuaTuck possible with their event coordination and sponsorship. Thanks to the support and participation in fundraising events, the camp is able to send several campers to summer sessions free of charge, so that they may enjoy a week-long vacation in a safe, encouraging environment. The campers engage in activities such as swimming, music and movies, socialization, sports, and visiting the petting zoo on camp grounds. LIFE LESSONS - The Miller Place High School recently welcomed Ruchi Shah, a scientist who developed an all-natural way to keep mosquitos from spreading diseases such as malaria and dengue fever to speak with students. Shah spoke to her life experiences, founding her company Mosquitoes Be Gone, her work with chemistry, biology and her goal to expand her product to parts of the world where these diseases cause multiple casualties. With her lecture, Shah aimed to inspire the students to pursue their passions, persevere through failures and move toward success.

Special Event Set Long before there were the Gates’ and the Zuckerbergs of the world, there was Ward Melville.

A major Long Island philanthropist and national business leader, the scope of Ward Melville’s generosity and vision included significant restoration of historic structures, purchase and preservation of environmental and commercial properties, education and countless other endeavors.

Ward Melville’s dream was to create a “living Williamsburg,” a place where history and

culture would blend with natural beauty.

Along with architect Richard Haviland Smythe, he designed what was to become the first planned business community in America, the Stony Brook Village Center. The Three Village area - Stony Brook, Setauket and Old Field has been forever changed because of this forwardthinking benefactor. He was President of Melville Corporation, the 3rd largest retailer in the U.S. with some 10,000 stores, which owned Thom McAn Shoes, Marshall’s, CVS Pharmacies, Kay-

Bee Toys, Wilson’s Leather and Suede and more. Ward Melville also donated the very land that today houses one of our nation’s leading research institutions, Stony Brook University.

The Stony Brook Community Fund, now the Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO), was founded in 1939. On January 19th, 1940, Ward Melville hosted a dinner at the Three Village Inn to present his plan for the future of Stony Brook Village. On January 19th, 2016, this milestone will

be commemorated at the Inn where it all began to “Celebrate What Was...Be Part of What’s To Come.”

Starting at 6 p.m. with live music, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner and dessert, guests will enjoy the same menu, hear Melville’s original speech and see the original model of the Village. There will even be chocolate cigars in place of real ones enjoyed in the day. The evening continues with an 8 p.m. sneak preview of The Jazz Loft next door which will soon showcase an historic collection of over 10,000

items of jazz memorabilia and serve as an education and jazz performance venue as well.

This 6,000 sq. ft. structure, formerly the site of the Suffolk Museum, now the Long Island Museum, was another of Melville’s philanthropic works.

Bringing this culture to Stony Brook Village is a case of history repeating itself while looking toward the future. During the 50s and 60s, the likes of Tony Bennett and Lionel Hampton performed at the “Dogwood Hollow Amphitheatre” in the very spot where WMHO’s

Educational & Cultural Center now stands in Stony Brook Village. The vision that Ward Melville had over 75 years ago still resonates today and the results of his efforts on behalf of the citizens of Stony Brook and beyond, both economically and culturally, will continue to touch generations for many years to come.

Long Island Authors’ Circle A group of published Long Island writers has formed an organization to be known as the “Long Island Authors’ Circle.” The newly established ‘LIAC’ is currently composed of six charter members who have been published individually in virtually every fiction and non-fiction genre; from poetry and drama, to journalism and novels.

The core group consists of four women and two men

who hail from St. James, Northport, Dix Hills, Massapequa Park, and Smithtown. Their varied backgrounds include: Town Councilwoman, Newspaper Publisher, College Professor, Literary Critic, Businessman, and Television Personality.

Purpose of the Authors’ Circle is the exchange of information and ideas valuable to members in the execution and furtherance

of their respective writing crafts. Communication is conducted primarily via email, though physical meetings are held when proposed and unanimously agreed to by the charter participants.

Each of the core members may sponsor new Long Island candidates for membership if they have been published. When unanimously approved, nominees are invited to

join the organization.

The “Long Island Authors’ Circle” has no mandatory meetings or dues; no officers, committees, or elections; no by-laws ... and participation in the group’s activities is at all times strictly voluntary.

“We’re sort of like the free-and-easy ‘Algonquin Round Table’ established

by Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and company,”

said celebrity biographer, Richard Grudens, and poet-dramatist-novelist, Charlene Knadle, agreed.

“This sort of ‘loosely structured’ group is often the most successful,” she noted. Journalist, Pat Biancaniello, pointed out that “…with the availability of modern electronic communications, a productive ‘meeting’ can be conducted in minutes, where once it would

require hours, or days.”

The author of eleven novels, member Jeb Ladouceur, said that he has resisted joining organizations demanding time that he might otherwise devote to writing in his Smithtown study, and author Dina Santorelli was quick to agree. “The time seems right for an association like this,” she
