his family’s Mohawk roots and shared different cultural aspects of the nation dating back to the 18th century. Included in the discussion were such things as why silver jewelry is worn, how shells were used to create a story or message on belts, and how gourds were transformed to create canteens or water jugs. Additionally,

he spoke about the different tribes that live in each region of New York, taught the students several Mohawk words and dispelled some common misunderstandings.

At the end of the event, the students learned how to sing and perform a traditional Mohawk lullaby as well as listened to few Mohawk legends.

to overcome. The Natural Helpers currently meets once every two weeks to discuss peer issues, the climate throughout the school, how they can best help and where to direct those struggling for additional assistance.

“The Natural Helpers program brings students together to discuss critical issues they experience in their everyday lives,” said Miller Place High School social worker Lisa Aitken.

“Not only did students feel more connected to one another, they also learned how to pay it forward and be the best resource possible for their peers.”

More than 30 Miller Place High School students in grades 9-12 recently participated in an intensive day-long training to learn how to become “Natural Helpers.” Natural Helpers is a Miller Place School District initiative which provides students with the tools they need to recognize when a peer may be struggling and offer effective support.

Participating students were nominated through an anonymous schoolwide survey, in which students wrote names of two peers they are most comfortable speaking with about a challenge or concern in their life.

“Students confronted with personal concerns or issues in their lives frequently turn to a peer for help first,” said Dr. Marianne F. Cartisano, Superintendent of Miller Place School District.

When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories.

For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house.

From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

confines of Long Island City.

With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included.

Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets.

Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold.

And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same.

Farewell to #580…

The Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School third grade students recently celebrated Veterans Day in the classroom. To honor veterans and active servicemen, students created a care package and wrote letters for third grade teacher Allison Brenner’s brother-in-law, and currently deployed Navy Petty Officer, Joseph Monaco.

More than 20 students wrote thoughtful letters about the importance of veterans, asked about Petty Officer Monaco’s deployment and experiences and thanked him for his service.

Students also included Halloween candy from home, some of their favorite coloring books and activity items and a group ‘Thank You’ poster.

Ms. Brenner showed students a picture of Petty Officer Monaco’s ship, the USS Comstock LSD45, and explained how packages are delivered to currently deployed naval vessels.

The purpose of this event was to raise student awareness about what it means to be a member of the military during Veterans Day. This event is part of the District’s initiative to teach students the meaning of Veterans Day and to help them express their appreciation in a creative way.

Miller Place School District’s Andrew Muller Primary School students were recently engaged in lessons about the importance of members of our armed forces.

During the lesson in Ms. Ashley Tinter’s class, she showed students a picture of her sister, a sailor in the

Navy currently stationed at a submarine base in Georgia on the smart board. Ms. Tinter taught students how to salute a member of the armed forces. The students then asked if they could salute Ms. Tinter’s sister to thank her for everything she does to protect the American

people.

This lesson was part of the Miller Place School District’s dedication to teaching students about the importance of honoring veterans and active servicemen and women.

Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions.

Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead.

Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm.

Some historians tie the practice

of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated.

An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king.

Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius).

Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings.

Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future.

Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another.

Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire.

Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year.

Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times.

During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry.

Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

The Miller Place School District’s North Country Road Middle School students recently helped spread holiday cheer throughout the community by decorating a tree on behalf of the school at the Tesla Science

Center.

Eighth grade student Patrick O’Connor and seventh grade student Abigail O’Connor spent time with local members of the community exploring the Tesla Science Center’s grounds and searching

for a Christmas tree to decorate.

After decorating the tree with tinsel, bows and ornaments, they placed a homemade sign reading ‘N C R Middle School’ on the tree to share with the community.

Freezing for a Reason The Miller Place School District recently celebrated the philanthropic efforts of 22 students from North Country Middle School who recently participated in the Town of Brookhaven’s 7th annual Polar Plunge competition to raise money in support of the Special Olympics.

The event gives Brookhaven residents an opportunity to have the exhilarating experience of swimming in the chilly waters of the Long Island Sound, while competing

for the team that can raise the most money for athletes of the Special Olympics New York.

The North Country Middle School students, “Team Extraordinary,” raised more than $10,000.

The team was started by North Country Middle School seventh grader Robert Fitton in 2014, after his brother was born with Down Syndrome. Robert personally raised more than $2,000, which was the fourth largest at the event.

Remembering Pearl Harbor Roosevelt following the attacks with the speech delivered by President George W. Bush after 9/11, noting the similar messages of unity and the need to rebuild. Lastly, after discussing the propaganda posters created during the time, the students created their own Pearl Harbor war posters. While researching images for their posters, they learned more about how a woman’s role in life changed after the attacks, the conspiracy theories surrounding the event and how Hawaii had not yet been named a state.

At R.C. Murphy Junior High School, all eighthgrade students viewed a

live streaming from the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, as well as the USS Arizona in Hawaii in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day. The National WWII Museum webcast focused on the events of that momentous day and featured on-the-scene reporting with survivors and witnesses of the attack and iconic locations. Those locations included the USS Arizona Memorial, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor and The National WWII Museum.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, students throughout the Three Village Central School District took time to pause and remember the events.

HOLIDAY HELP - The Edna Louise Spear Elementary School recently held a holiday gift drive that resulted in the donation of enough gifts to make the holidays bright for 21 local children. The gifts were collected as part of the school’s annual Holiday Help gift drive, which is run by Jessica Peterson, school counselor, in collaboration with Port Jefferson parents, school district staff and the Port Jefferson Fire Department.

Learn to Code The Miller Place School District’s Andrew Muller Primary School recently organized an opportunity for students to learn about developing technology and how to code.

Eileen Laffey, the District’s technology

integration specialist and staff developer, worked with students from Kindergarten through second grade to introduce them to the inner workings of technological programing.

The activity was part of

the District’s involvement in the global initiative, Hour of Code, which is intended to inspire students to develop an interest in computer science at a young age.

Innovation was in the air at Rocky Point Middle School when the eighthgrade students in Robert Ciaccio’s Technology Solutions course worked to create cars powered by alternative sources of energy.

As part of a multi-faceted unit of study, the students learned to use the various tools in the classroom as they designed and constructed wooden cars.

The vehicles were required to follow a specific theme and be constructed in a way that they could be massed produced, meaning they had to meet specifications and restraints.

After

constructing the cars, the students then worked to modify it to make it travel down a ramp at a faster or slower rate.

Following that experiment, the students researched alternative sources of energy and developed solutions to move the car from the bottom to the top of the same ramp. Once they perfected their solutions, they tested them before their classmates and rated each project based on the assignment requirements.

“The focus of the course is problem-solving and studying the technology behind the technology

we know today,” said Mr. Ciaccio. “Within the program, I challenge the students to think outside the box and develop new ways to meet every day problems and obstacles.

They are not just creating something tangible, but developing skills that can be applied to every day events.”

Throughout the car project, the students also learned about the patent process and earned a patent for their designs and alternative energy solutions. Once a patent was earned, no other student could use that solution.

INTERFACE TOY DRIVE - In keeping with the true spirit of the holiday season, Brookhaven residents opened their hearts in a big way by donating thousands of toys at the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. The event, held on December 16th in the lobby of Town Hall, was co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau and JVC Broadcasting with on-air personalities from all five JVC radio stations broadcasting live. Through raising donations, the toy Drive will provide gifts for more than 7,000 children in need, ranging in age from infant to 15 years of age.

Safety Town

Minnesauke Elementary School students in the Three Village Central School District learned important safety rules and stayed active as they worked to navigate a giant obstacle course on scooters during this year’s Safety Town.

For the event, the entire gym was transformed into a mini-town, complete with road signs and activity stations, such as a fitness center, hockey station and carwash. In addition to learning about the rules of the road, the students were also able to practice exiting

a bus through a large cutout wooden bus.

While on the scooters, they were required to follow proper driving rules, including stopping at stop signs and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Superintendent Appointed The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education is pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Casciano has been appointed the district’s superintendent of schools during its December 13th business meeting. Dr. Casciano has been serving as the district’s interim superintendent since July 1st. Effective January 2nd, 2017, Dr. Casciano’s term

as superintendent will run through January 1st, 2020.

“Dr. Casciano brings a wealth of experience to the district and we are extremely pleased that he has agreed to stay,” said Board President Kathleen Brennan. “We are very happy and look forward to his time here in Port Jefferson.”

Prior to accepting the interim superintendent

position in Port Jefferson, Dr. Casciano was employed by the William Floyd School District for 41 years, including nine years as superintendent.

The Stony Brook resident holds degrees from Central Connecticut State University (BS), Southampton College (MS) and C.W. Post (PD in Educational Leadership).

He earned his doctoral

degree in educational administration from New York University.

Dr. Casciano is also a community leader, serving as co-chair of Congressman Lee Zeldin’s Education Advisory Committee, past president of the Rotary Club of Shirley & the Mastics, on the board of directors of the William Floyd Alumni Association and on the board of

directors of OCEAN Arts.

“I thank the Board for this opportunity to serve,” said Dr. Casciano. “I am looking forward to working together with our Board of Education, leadership team, faculty, staff, parents and community to achieve amazing things for the children of Port Jefferson.”
