or the 11th consecutive year, Rocky Point High School’s Varsity Cheerleaders have won a bid to compete in the UCA National Cheer Competition in Orlando this February. The team earned their trip to Nationals based on their performance at this year’s UCA Empire Regionals at Stony Brook University. On December 17th, Marc Rosenzweig of Willow Pet Hotel presented a check from their second annual fundraiser, which raised $1,883 for the purchase of canine bulletproof vests for the local K9 units.

Additionally, after seeing the story on NEWS 12, Ballistics Expert for the NYPD, Sal LaCova of Survival Armor, donated an additional vest for the cause to be presented at the event.

Willow Pet Hotel’s 2nd Annual Pet Awareness Festival was a great success in raising funding for canine bullet proof vests.

‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column…

As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s.

Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today.

By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

At one point during the fundraiser, the spotlight was on officer James Finn.

Officer Finn was interviewed

by News 12 Long Island due to his decision to name his

dog, K9 Glenn, in honor of NYPD Officer Glenn Pettit, who was tragically killed on September 11th, 2001.

With that in mind, Willow Pet Hotel decided to donate these bulletproof vests in honor of Officer Pettit.

On December 17th, Willow Pet Hotel hosted the presentation of the vest and monetary donations to pay for two additional vests for the United States Police Canine Association

region 7 (USPCA7) K9 Division. Officers and their four-legged partners were in attendance to accept the donations.

The donations exceeded expectations, and two vests were purchased, and the third was donated by Det. Sal LaCova. The vests will be presented to three different police divisions: NYPD Transit Canine Division, MTA canine and NYPD Emergency Services

Canine Unit.

“This day is for all of the canines that help protect us every day,” says Willow Pet Hotel owner-operator Marc Rosenzweig. “We wanted to give back to the community and show that we are always there and willing to support one another. We take care of pets for a living, so we decided to raise money and support those who protect and support us.

It’s the right thing to do.”

Rosenzweig also went on to say that, “This was a day full of fun that brought the community together.”

For the 11th consecutive year, Rocky Point High School’s varsity cheerleaders have one a bid to compete in the UCA National cheer competition in Orlando this February.

The team earned their trip to nationals based on their performance at this year’s UCA Empire Regionals at Stony Brook University. During the event, they dominated the division and captured the title by 12 points.

Students For The Day In an effort to gain insight into their students’ lives, two Earl L. Vandermeulen High School teachers recently posed as students for a day.

Both social studies teacher Jesse Rosen and English teacher Matt Sefick dressed as Port Jefferson students, completed homework assignments, changed for gym, took quizzes and tests and attended a full day of classes.

Rosen, who spent the day in tenth-grade classes, said the experience was eye

opening and one he will not forget. He said that while teaching, he would often become frustrated when students would start to pack up minutes before the bell would ring. However, after being a student for a day, he now understands why they do it.

Similarly, Sefick, who spent the day as a senior taking five Advanced Placement classes, said the transition from one class to the next was very challenging.

“One moment, I was thinking about the

unemployment rate in the United States,” he said.

“The next, I was in a dark room trying to develop pictures, and later, I was trying to evaluate the effectiveness of a written argument. To shift my focus from one subject to the next proved difficult.”

Based on his day as a senior, Sefick plans to make a few changes in his classroom, such as being more comforting to students who might answer a question wrong and more complimentary to those who answer correctly.

Dickens Fest Students from the Port Jefferson School District’s music department performed at the 19th annual Charles Dickens Festival’s Victorian Tea at the First Presbyterian Church in the Village of Port Jefferson on

December 6th and 7th.

The musical groups that performed included the Edna Louise Spear Elementary fifth-grade select choir, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School jazz ensemble, the Port Jefferson Middle

Grease Lightening School and high school orchestras and the high school chamber choir. The Tri-M Music Honor Society also performed chamber music at various locations across the village.

Pink Ladies and macho T-Birds were among the cast of characters that graced the Ward Melville High School stage this December when the school performed “Grease” as its annual musical.

The comical show, detailing the lives of several 1950’s high school students, transported audiences back in time as they watched the studentactors navigate such topics as peer pressure, personal

values and love. From the opening scene to the entire cast singing the closing number “We Go Together,” this year’s show was a hit during its three-night run.

World Of Research Rocky Point High School ninth-grade science research class learned about the complex work of several professional scientists during two workshops.

Dr. Gil Hanson, a geologist from Stony Brook University, visited the school to speak with the class about acid rain.

Despite society understanding its causes, Dr. Hanson explained that

acid rain continues to be a problem and detailed his research on its impact on the top layer of soil especially.

To enable the students to further understand the subject, they also had the chance to help collect soil samples from the woods behind the school and test the samples for pH. As one student’s research project is focused on the subject, Dr. Hanson provided him with some

ideas to pursue.

The class also had the chance to visit and tour the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Lab with their families. During the visit, physicists Dr. Chris Pinkenburg and Dr. Abhay Deshpande explained the experiments they have been working on and shared their enthusiasm for science.

The Long Island Museum is seeking volunteers interested in learning how to crochet for a major community-focused exhibition on museum grounds.

Hooked@LIM, The Crocheted Tree Project will begin with a three-day workshop from January 17th to 19th on crocheting with traveling artist Carol Hummel.

Following the workshop, volunteer will be given patterns and yarn to create individual pieces in varying sizes. Once the crocheted pieces are completed, Hummel will attach them

and wrap five trees on the museum grounds in spring 2015, where visitors may enjoy them for several months.

“The best part about this project is that it engages the whole community,” said Neil Watson, Executive Director of the Long Island Museum. “One of our goals at the Long Island Museum is to strengthen our relationship with the community, and it’s projects like this that help us to achieve that.”

Hummel has created similar installations at the Field Museum in Chicago

and other locations in Ohio, West Virginia, Norway and India. Her explosions of colorful yarn-covered trees are unexpected, eyecatching and fun.

Singing In The Season Rocky Point Middle School’s select chorus helped to ring in the holiday season during a sing-along with local senior citizens at the Rocky Point VFW.

During the event, the sixth through eighth-grade students performed three of their winter concert pieces before leading a sing-along with the

members in attendance.

The students’ festive attire added to the holiday spirit and all left looking forward to the celebrations ahead.

Leonardo Figueredo won Suffolk County Community College’s Chopped-like culinary competition Battle for the Beach with a delectable baked airline chicken breast with natural au jus and butternut squash risotto seasoned with cream and fresh thyme.

Student contestants were presented with a mystery basket of ingredients - a whole chicken and butternut squash - that they had to turn into a mouth-watering dish. The

competition is similar to the popular reality television show “Chopped” airing on the Food Network.

The judges - five of Suffolk’s faculty chefs and Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay - evaluated each student’s creation on creativity, presentation and taste.

Huntington’s Victoria Shannon placed second with her roasted breast of chicken paired with roasted cauliflower, garlic mashed

potatoes and butternut squash. Candice Weiss of Bayport placed third with baked chicken, roasted maple glazed butternut squash and asparagus spears.

Top Chef Leonardo Figueredo won a sevennight stay at the Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, Fla., and an opportunity to work under the supervision of the resort’s executive chef.

The prize includes roundtrip airfare and ground transportation.

Cookies With Santa The Christmas season officially began at Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing Home with the 5th Annual Cookies With Santa program on December 4th.

All the residents and their families enjoyed crafts, cookies and hot

chocolate, with Christmas music provided by a DJ. There was also a visit from Santa with a photo opportunity for the whole family.

To help make the season more meaningful, staff assists the residents in

writing out and sending their loved ones beautiful cards for Christmas.

Later in the month, the recreation staff will wrap a small gift for each resident so that everyone has something to open on Christmas.

Helping Neighbors In Need Giving back at any age is a way of life for the Lots of Love Club, a team of community volunteers from Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community. The dozen or so members of the club, who reside in the skilled nursing and assisted living accommodations at Jefferson’s Ferry, regularly raise funds to make donations to various not for profit organizations in the surrounding communities.

The club’s effort is twofold. First, the club holds a fundraiser on the premises of Jefferson’s Ferry, selling items

that they have made to residents, employees and visitors. They have, for example sold homemade baked goods, chocolate dipped pretzels and holiday ornaments.

With the proceeds, the club then purchases items to donate to a local charity.

“The Lots of Love Club is incredibly dedicated and resourceful,” said Jennifer Barrett, director of therapeutic recreation at the Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry, who works with the group.

“They don’t let age or ability stand in the way of contributing to those

in need. They raise every dime and spread their generosity around the community.”

This month, Lots of Love is selling a uniform-clad snowman tree ornament to support Operation Calling Card, which distributes overseas calling cards to members of the military deployed overseas.

Operation Calling Card holds particular resonance with the club this year, as they recently lost one of the club’s founders, who was a survivor of Pearl Harbor.

Ms. Barrett recently transported the Lots of

Love Club to Walmart so that they could purchase baby care products such as diapers and wipes to donate to Riverhead’s Life Touch, which helps single mothers.

The club has also donated boxes of food to the St. Gerard food pantry in Port Jefferson, made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a shelter in Bay Shore, and bought school supplies for Little Flower Children and Family Services.

In summary, Ms. Barrett said, “The Lots of Love Club makes the spirit of holiday giving a year round commitment.”

This fall, Nick will be attending Oklahoma State University, where he will continue his impressive wrestling career. Sabrina aspires to go into the medical field following graduation.

National Coding In celebration of computer science education week, students at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in the Rocky Point School District had the chance to learn about computer coding through a hands-on initiative called the Hour of Code.

During the event, which was sponsored by www.code.org, students joined millions of others nationwide in learning basic programming skills by completing activities geared toward their inquisitive nature.

In the computer lab and school library,

students logged onto the organization’s website and worked to transform simple commands into a string of coded actions.

After completing the 20 tasks included in the event, each student was awarded a certificate of commendation.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s community connections club helped to stir, sift and bake up a warm holiday season for those in need this year by creating tasty treats for local families.

Throughout the year, the club devotes its time to volunteering and making positive connections

with individuals living within the Three Village Central School District community.

From baking apple pies during Thanksgiving to knitting and crocheting hats for the neonatal unit at Stony Brook University the club spearheads several handson initiatives.

Motivated Student At its December 9th meeting, the Port Jefferson Rotary Club honored Port Jefferson Middle School seventh-grader Dennis Jourdain as November’s Most Motivated Student of

the Month.

Jourdain was nominated for the honor by his English teacher Deirdre Filippi, said Jourdain is a “super kid,” as well as hardworking and diligent.

“It is evident that Dennis is on track to repeat this feat before he moves up from middle school to high school,” she said.

Seeking Runners The American Lung Association of the Northeast is seeking charity runners to support its lifesaving mission by running in the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half marathon on Sunday, March 15th.
