Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Varsity Club raised $1,200 for Wreaths Across America, by raising awareness and funds to recognize National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 19.

The Varsity Club members sold wreaths to be a part of wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and more than 2,600 additional locations across the country, at sea and abroad.

The club was introduced to the fundraising opportunity last year, when now senior Liam Cooper introduced the concept to assistant principal, Kevin Bernier, who in turn reached out to club advisers, teachers Deirdre Filippi and Jesse Rosen. The collaborative effort has now raised more than $2,700.

The 2018 ReviewTrackers Online Reviews Stats report found that star ratings affect consumer behavior, as 80 percent of consumers say they trust 4-, 4.5- and 5-star ratings the most. The good news for consumers is that product reviews need not be long to be effective.

ReviewTrackers notes that the average review is now roughly the size of a tweet and has gotten 65 percent shorter since 2010. That means it’s simple, quick and effective to support local businesses via online reviews of their products.

Jazz Loft Holiday Gala 2020 Fundraising Concert Available for Streaming

Holiday season 2020 will continue to test everyone’s patience and strength of character, but the Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook, is now offering a musical experience that will be like no other-a virtual holiday gala featuring an all-star lineup of Jazz performers. The concert was filmed at the Jazz Loft on December 8, and is now available for viewing on the Jazz Loft’s website for a $20 donation.

“The holiday season is usually the Jazz Loft’s busiest time with concerts scheduled throughout the month, but of course this

year is anything but usual,” said Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel. “We are doing the next best thing by bringing a stellar lineup of Jazz performers here to the Loft to be filmed, all while following proper socially distancing protocols for our performers and film crew.

The result is a wonderful holiday experience for viewers.”

Manuel says the format of the show follows in the traditional footsteps of holiday specials once hosted by famed crooners like Andy Williams and Bing Crosby.

This Christmas Give the Gift of Saving a Soldiers Dog from being Abandoned Overseas, Time Is Running Out A soldier’s dog is in urgent need of rescue, or he could be left behind as his soldier is being deployed back to the U.S. from serving overseas.

Due to reduced flights and heighted requirements for animal travel there are just days left to make this rescue happen and keep this soldier and his dog together.

“The United States military does not leave best friends behind. We need your help to reunite them here in America,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “Even small donations will add up to help. We want to give Specialist Lucas the great Christmas present of bringing his dog back home with him.”

When soldiers are deployed they can get lonely, miss home, and become depressed. Every once in a while they are lucky enough to come across a stray animal that they befriend, which brings them happiness. That’s exactly what happened to Army Specialist Lucas, when he came across a dog that he’s now desperate to bring back to the U.S. with him now that his deployment is over.

“I noticed his calmness, he just wanted some love and attention. I love all animals but he was special,” says Specialist Lucas. “I can’t imagine having to leave my best friend behind, God only knows what will happen to him and my heart will be broken.”

The soldier saw the dog walking around, lonely and hungry, near the base where he is stationed.

As he considered how he could help, the dog made his way to him, wanting attention. Specialist Lucas decided to name him Boy Dawg, and they instantly made a connection. Each day, the dog would seek

him out for attention and food.

Over time, they created a bond that has helped Specialist Lucas during his time being deployed.

When he got word that he was going to be sent back home to the states, he couldn’t imagine leaving Boy Dawg behind to forage on his own again. By this point, he considered him part of his family. He reached out to Paws of War to see if they could help him bring his dog back home.

Paws of War has helped numerous soldiers to bring their pets back to the U.S. However, this year the mission is more challenging to pull off.

The pandemic has severely limited the number of flights coming from the U.S., especially those allowing dogs. Plus, flights from overseas are costly, and there is a lot of red tape that needs to be addressed and logistics to overcome.

The only way they can successfully bring Boy Dawg home with Specialist Lucas is with financial help from people in the community. They are urgently accepting donations so they can plan

the mission and secure the flight.

COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result.

Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, long-

haulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus.

“The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those

who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted.

But we have also seen younger patients show longterm health impacts after recovering from the virus.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of short- and longterm health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is

revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus.

Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician.

He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen.

To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program.

Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medically-supervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education.
