The entire school population took part in the collection efforts, amassing 1,460 items to donate and approximately $50 in cash. Dr. Tara Sladek-Maharg’s social studies class accumulated the most goods with a total of 358 items and were honored with a pizza party for their efforts.

“I am overwhelmed and sincerely touched that so many students and staff were willing to donate to this important cause,” said student council adviser Allison Giannusa. “Their generosity will definitely make a positive impact on many local families.”

HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door.

They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation.

When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout.

This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising.

Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed.

Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed.

Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like.

Not that I am much better when it comes to this.

Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous.

They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch.

So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet.

Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much.

And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package.

In everything, it’s the thought that counts.

With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

Greenhouse Visit

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today visited Suffolk County’s newest cooperative project at the West Sayville Greenhouse.

County Executive Bellone joined Legislator Kara Hahn and the Suffolk Association for Habilitation and Residential Care (AHRC) to meet the members of AHRC who maintain the greenhouse by growing, tending and selling plants.

The Suffolk Association for Habilitation and Residential Care serves children and adults with developmental disabilities by providing programs, services and opportunities for them to grow and contribute to society in meaningful ways. Currently AHRC serves more than 2,500 individuals across Suffolk County.

Rocky Point High School’s varsity cheerleading team recently took home the firstplace title during this year’s Empire Regional Championship at Nassau Community College.

This was the 13th

regional championship title for Rocky Point and the first-place win that awarded them a bid to the National High School Cheerleading Championship hosted in Orlando, Florida in early February.

Prevent eye injuries when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working on the job. Wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, or eye guards that are made of polycarbonate. Talk to your eye care provider about the appropriate type of protective eyewear for your needs.

Wear sunglasses.

Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase your risk for getting an eye disease like cataract or age-related macular degeneration, which is a progressive eye disease leading to blindness.

When purchasing sunglasses, look for those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. These steps can help keep your eyes healthy and prevent vision loss and blindness from eye disease.

Through a partnership between Port Jefferson School District music teacher Vanessa Salzman and Paul Newland, outreach coordinator at

Stony Brook University, Port Jefferson orchestra students and their families are invited to attend concerts each year at the university. Tickets are provided courtesy of Staller Center Outreach Endowment.

In honor of the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Rocky Point High School’s Human Rights Club created several promotional items centered on the importance

She will be attending Molloy College to major in business this fall.

Peter is a two sport Scholar-Athlete who has served as the captain of

the Rocky Point football and lacrosse teams, is the president of the varsity club and was named an All-American in lacrosse.

Additionally, he is a member of the National Honor Society, History Honor Society, gives back to the community by coaching youth football and assisting in youth lacrosse clinics and tournaments.

He was named the most outstanding midfielder in Division II lacrosse and has received an athletic scholarship for lacrosse.

Peter will be studying mechanical engineering at the University of Virginia this fall.

Rocky Point High School seniors Abigail Bellport and Peter LaSalla have been named 2017 Suffolk Zone award winners by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

The pair was honored for being the top female and male senior physical education leaders in their school during the association’s annual awards dinner. The award criterion considered students’ leadership in physical education, scholarship, character and a role model to their peers.

Challenge Accepted Setauket Elementary School third-grade science club members learned about properties of boats and solid structures during a hands-on STEM-based learning challenge.

After learning about the 1620 journey of the Mayflower, the students worked with simple and commonly found household items to create small boats. They used such materials as construction paper, popsicle sticks, tape, paper plates, pipe cleaners

and foil. Once designed, the students’ boats were placed in a water bin and tested to see if they could hold five marbles and sustain ocean winds, which were replicated using a blow-dryer.

During a subsequent meeting, the students worked in small groups to build a sturdy shelter for the pilgrims and tested to see if their creations could withstand the weather elements the new settlers would encounter when

they arrived in America.

The shelters were required to have a door and a roof, be only two inches taller than the paper pilgrims they were provided and could not be wider than a paper plate. Once constructed, they were tested on how successful they could brave the weather elements using a water bottle, hair dryer and heavy jar of marbles, each respectively representing rain, wind and snow.

Featured Lesson P.J. Gelinas Junior High School art teacher Michael Sacco was recently selected to have one of his cuttingedge lessons and associated student-artwork featured in the December issue of

SchoolArts. This is the eighth time a lesson by Mr. Sacco has been published in the national educationallybased magazine.

The article titled “Luminous Light Circles”

features artwork from Gelinas students past and present. The lesson featured is based on Mr. Sacco’s eighth-grade lesson on using white pencils on black paper.

Sharing in the spirit of the holiday season, the staff at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District sponsored a

Setauket Elementary School first-grade students in the Three Village Central School District are learning about the basics of computer programming and building their coding skills using interactive beebot devices.

The hand-held beeshaped devices enabled the students to code the object’s movements through the touch of a series of buttons. They

selected between forward, backward, reverse and more options as they program the bee’s path through a map with the goal of landing on a specific shape.

These bee-bots are used as part of the district’s elementary STEM program in grades K-3. As part of their activities, the students work to navigate the bee through the map surface, which can be

made using with different objects, including shapes, geographic locations and money concepts.

Through the activities, the students are not only gaining a greater awareness of computer programming, but also reinforcing classroom lessons from a variety of content areas, including mathematics and social studies.

On December 7th, Supervisor Ed Romaine thanked members of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club New York Chapter 26 for their heartwarming contributions to the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. Each year, the club holds an event to collect Teddy Bears for the drive.

Three Village Central School District’s Ward Melville High School’s Virtual Enterprise class recently competed against 90 other schools from across Long Island during a Leadership Conference at Long Island University, Post campus, and earned a semifinalist spot as a result of their performance.

Prior to the contest, the students created a comprehensive business plan on their original

firm concept — Mac Attack. The student’s plan was for a restaurant that puts a unique spin on the classic mac and cheese. All dishes start with a macaroni and cheese base, including gluten free, dairy free and vegan options and they offer a host of customizations to create the perfect mac and cheese for all.

With the support of their teacher, Ilene Littman, the students spoke about their

restaurant during the event. The “elevator pitch,” which lasted 60 seconds, covered topics such as company goals, the target market, niche and appeal to investors. Mac Attack’s pitch was presented by Niki Friedwald, a senior and the company’s CEO, to a crowd of more than 1,500 attendees.

Virtual Enterprise is a virtual world company filled with various businesses run by high school students in a virtual world.

Message of Strength Port Jefferson School District’s Edna Louise Elementary School students learned about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, as they welcomed special guest speaker Chris Pendergast who has been living with the illness for more than 20 years.

In addition to sharing the

history of the progressive, neurodegenerative disease and his personal journey from diagnosis to founding the ALS Ride for Life Campaign to raising awareness and funds for research to find a cure, Pendergast engaged the students with inspirational words of hope and encouragement in meeting any of life’s challenges.

Using an augmentative

communication device — an alphabet board to spell out his thoughts — Pendergast was assisted by his volunteers in “speaking” with the students, sharing in language that was age-appropriate for the elementary grade levels, his positive messages of strength and determination.

Warm Holiday Rocky Point School District students in grades K-5 helped to ensure that those children in need had a warm holiday by collecting 150 pajamas for the Pajama Program, an initiative organized through Scholastic’s Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive.

Recognizing that

Scholastic matches the donation of pajamas with a book, the fourth-grade students in Kristie Jackson, Deborah Vieira and Lisa Celentano’s classes wanted to add a special touch to their donations. Students from these classes created their own collection of fairy tales to add to the donation.

The students researched fairy tales and the structure of the written pieces before proceeding through the writing process to develop their own fractured fairy tales. The completed stories were bound altogether to give each recipient a copy of the students’ Fairy Tales Collection.
