For many, the holiday season is one filled with joy and laughter, but for Long Islanders facing financial insecurities, this time of year can be anything but. Each year, nonprofit agencies in both Nassau and Suffolk counties turn to United Way of Long Island seeking donations of toys, clothing, food, household items and volunteers to help make this holiday season a little happier for those in-need. The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet.

I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough.

But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week.

Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters.

And the stores. We all know

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators.

It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it.

When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly?

January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

Student Spotlight A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history.

I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school.

Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard?

Now, my school has changed a lot.

Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum.

Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day.

Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention.

In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars.

This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured.

I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster.

It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming.

The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time.

Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end.

If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today.

If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles.

The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

The Little Tree

To be noticed, it tried many tricks.

With hatchets, workers chopped down all Of the evergreens that had grown tall.

They took away all the towering trees.

Ignored the little one that hardly Reached above their knees.

To decorate houses and halls for X-mas The trees were meant.

All over different cities they were sent.

Proudly, with their needles raised, The wind their “good-bye” to the blue spruce traced.

The grounds yawned where the trees had been.

Only the unwanted little spruce was seen.

Snow soon after began to fall; The little tree dreamt of being strong and tall.

He knew that the trees that had left him Would shine and twinkle when the day got dim.

On the day before X-mas, a father and son For a walk in the snow covered woods had gone.

With a shovel, the two cut carefully loose The frosty earth around the spruce.

They took it to their modest home.

To be honored and cherished it had come.

The spruce, however, was given a special spot On its owner’s well cared for garden lot.

Each year, while the boy and the spruce did grow, A star was attached and glowed thru the snow.

The FREE Players treated the audience to a familyfriendly musical where they joined Dorothy Gale of Kansas as she dreamt of what lies over the rainbow.

Along the way they met the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion as they were taken on a magical journey through the Land of Oz, complete

with a wizard, witches and winged monkeys. At the end of their trip they discovered the importance of friendship, and realized there really is no place like home.

The FREE Players is a one-of-a-kind theatre troupe within FREE embracing the talents of performers of all abilities.

The FREE Players dedicate their energies to the arts through instruction in dance, drama, music, technical theater, and fine arts. Through the arts, individuals have made great strides in improving their interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to multitask, focus, and take direction, all of which helps them move towards their goal of being independent contributing members of

society.

The annual musical fundraiser supports opportunities for the men and women who receive services from FREE. Proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will go to enhancing current opportunities and developing innovative community programing alternatives.

FREE entered into a new partnership with the Bayway Arts Center where the theater will receive valuable help with their day-to-day operations by the men and women supported by FREE providing these individuals with the opportunity to explore and develop their full vocational potential.

Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) announced that it has entered into a new partnership with the nonfor-profit BroadHollow Theatre Company in East Islip. The new program will be a symbiotic relationship between the Theatre Company and FREE wherein the theater will receive valuable help with their day-today operations and the individuals supported by FREE will gain valuable experience in the community. As part of this partnership, persons with disabilities will be offered the opportunity to explore and develop their full vocational potential.

“We are so excited to enter into this partnership with the BroadHollow Theatre Company, who has long been a friend to FREE,” said Robert S. Budd, CEO for FREE. “We are pleased to be

able to offer individuals who participate in our theatre day program with opportunities to gain real world experience. It really shows them that anything is possible. I’m proud to be able to give them hope and help in making their dreams come true.”

Participants in the program will have the opportunity to engage in local community interactions/relationships with merchants, and working on opportunities that enhance their skills.

Training will focus on helping FREE’s men and women enhance their job skills through a community based initiative and at the same time allow FREE to support a local theater. The BroadHollow Theatre Company will benefit by enhancing the theater going experience for the community. A number of FREE’s men and women have been given

the opportunity to work as actors as a result of the training at BroadHollow Theatre.

“Our partnership with FREE aligns itself well with one of the key points in our mission statement – ‘extending a helping hand to those charitable organizations assisting the communities that we serve,” said Robert O’Neill, Executive Artistic Director, BroadHollow Theatre Company. “Our collaboration enables those individuals with an interest in theatre arts to continue to develop their performance skills as well as job skills for opportunities behind the scenes. Osteoporosis

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer

hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for

osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid

(NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go.

The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe.

Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo.

Shortcut: “I’m only driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.”

Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home.

Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.”

Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt.

Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts.

Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.”

Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each passenger should be properly restrained on every trip.

Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.”

Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly.

Raising Funds Port Jefferson students presented the Fortunato Breast Health Center at Mather Hospital with a check for $6,486.33 as part of Mather Hospital’s Paint Port Pink initiative.

To raise the money, the students participated in a variety of fundraising activities throughout the month of October. At the Edna Louise Spear

Elementary School, students collected donations in an hourglass jar; Port Jefferson Middle School students secured donations through bake sales, shoelace and frisbee sales; and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School varsity cheerleaders and student organization members held a “Flocking Fundraiser.”

As part

of the latter endeavor, community members paid representatives from either group to flock the yards of their neighbors with pink flamingos.

“The students did a tremendous job raising funds. We are very proud of them,” said Debra Ferry, director of physical education, health & athletics.

Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts.

• Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t

retrieve them.

• Protect your mail. Keep your eyes open for bills and statements. If you think one of your statements is missing, quickly call that company to let it know.

Take outgoing mail to a postal mailbox or the post office. If your mail suddenly stops, go to the post office. Thieves sometimes submit change of address forms to divert mail to their address.

• Check your bank and credit card account activity promptly upon receipt of a written statement.

If you see any problems, immediately report them to your financial institution. The Federal Trade Commission offers guidance on immediate steps to take to limit the harm.

On December 7th, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright, and members of the Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) celebrated the 350th Anniversary of the historic Brewster House (c. 1665) in East Setauket.

The house, which was home to six generations of Brewsters, is considered the oldest in the Town of Brookhaven. During the American Revolution, it served as a tavern and general store, entertaining British troops. A frequent

visitor during that time was American Patriot Caleb Brewster, a member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. As a Continental Army Officer, Brewster served under spy ring organizer Major Benjamin Talmadge, and participated in a number of critical military actions.

In addition to celebrating the 350th Anniversary of the Brewster House, Supervisor Romaine and Councilwoman Cartright presented a $10,258 check to the WMHO from the Town of Brookhaven/New York State Department

Prior to being presented with recognition certificates, the honorees performed several selections for those in

Facing the Truth The Port Jefferson community took a stand to become more informed about the dangers of overdose from prescription opioid medications by attending the Suffolk County Police Department’s powerful presentation, “The Ugly Truth.” Hosted jointly by the Port Jefferson School District, the Suffolk County Police Department, Port Jefferson Village Board and Port Jefferson Village Alliance, the evening of presentations by experts in the field disclosed the issues regarding opioid use and overdose, signs of a drug overdose and the potential life-saving method of administering intranasal Naloxone (Narcan).

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert explained that the goal of the forum was for the community to gain a better understanding of the issue, while Jason Spiller, who brought the program to the district, explained that the end game is to break the cycle of drug use and overdose by being more informed. Karen Sullivan, who assisted Spiller, said her goal was for the community to be “proactive and not reactive,” as seen in the large attendance at the forum.

SCPD Deputy Commissioner Tim Sini said the county is in the middle of an epidemic, but that this is an opportunity to prevent future deaths

due to overdose and medication abuse. “We are not going to arrest ourselves out of this epidemic,” Sini stated.

“Early education is the best solution.”

Chief Police Surgeon Scott Coyne noted that all SCPD officers have received Narcan training. Police officer George Lynagh also talked about heroin use and packaging, while Medical Examiner Dr. Ruth Kohlmeier discussed the trend of “polypharmacy,” the mixing of drugs.

Jason Byron, from the Emergency Medical Training Unit of the Suffolk County Police Academy, explained the signs of an overdose and led training on how to administer the life-saving drug Narcan.

Interim Director The Port Jefferson School District is pleased to announce that the Board of Education appointed Edward A. Cinelli as interim director of health, physical education and athletics at its December 8th meeting.

Cinelli will officially take the helm of the department following the December holiday break and assist in the search for a permanent director this spring.

“We are very excited to have Mr. Cinelli serve in this position while the search for a new director commences,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert said.

“His vast experience and wealth of knowledge within the areas of health, physical education and athletics will be a great

asset to our students, staff and district.”

Prior to accepting this role with Port Jefferson, Cinelli served for 11 years as the executive director of Section XI sports in Suffolk County, a position in which he coordinated, facilitated, supervised and provided the communications network for all matters relative to interscholastic athletics in Section XI throughout the county. Before that, he worked in the PatchogueMedford School District for 30 years, serving as director of interscholastic athletics and physical education for more than 18 of those years. He began his educational career as a physical education and social studies teacher at Tekonsha High School in Michigan.

Cinelli holds a Bachelor of Arts in physical education from Hillsdale College, a Master of Arts in physical education from Adelphi University and a School District Administrator Professional Diploma from Long Island University. He also holds New York State School District Administrator and New York State Physical Education Recreation certificates.

Throughout the years, Cinelli has earned several awards and accolades.

He was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame, received the New York State Athletic Administrators Association Apple Award, and was designated Suffolk County Athletic Director of the Year.

Freezin for a Reason

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) staff from special education facilities in Centereach, Oakdale, Port Jefferson, and Westhampton Beach participated in the Town of Brookhaven’s Polar Plunge – Freezin’ for a Reason – for Special Olympics at

Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Collectively, the four centers raised over $5,400.

Centereach Academic Center Principal Sue Goltz said, “The Polar Plunge is a unique way for the staff to engage in team-building exercises while raising donations for a good cause

like Special Olympics.”

Many ESBOCES staff members participated in the plunge last year. They spread the word about how much fun they had, for a good cause, and managed to convince more people to plunge this year.

After learning that 80% of water bottles end up in the nation’s landfills and that many in the community do not recycle on a regular basis, Rocky Point students and members of the Girl Scout Ambassador Troops 2945 and 1984 Brianna Florio, Nikki Garguilo, Skylar Intravaia, Kelly McCauley and Alexa Titone sought out to make a difference.

As part of the Girl Scout badge Justice which asks members to evaluate environmental injustices - the group has launched a campaign to inspire their peers to help the environment through recycling water bottles. Teaming up with the high school’s Be a Nicer Neighbor Club, the students proposed placing recycling receptacles

Inspiring Recycling by the school’s cafeteria and gym, and using the funds collected from the deposits to conduct such activities as cooking for the homeless or to support local charities.

The group was commended for their efforts during a recent Board of Education meeting.
