The administration at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Sequoya High School is pleased to announce that 36 students attained honor roll status. The criteria for high honor roll was an academic average of 94 and a grade of 90 or above for honor roll.

Honor Roll ceremonies were held at the Sequoya High School in the morning and afternoon to celebrate the achievement of the students.

Teachers Jessica Koster

and Matthew Perry cochaired the committee.

They agree it has become prestigious to capture a place on the honor roll.

Koster said, “The students take it very serious. They want to be on it and seek to do better each year.”

Perry added, “Being on the honor roll in high school, and being able to list that on your college application, distinguishes a student from other applicants.”

Bridgett, a Southold CSD senior, said she is very excited to be on the honor roll. “I made it and it’s the first quarter. I’m interested in attending an art school like Fashion Institute of Technology. Being on the honor roll is a great achievement.”

And just like that, it’s less than two weeks until Christmas.

No sooner did I unpack my infamous Christmas closet and brace myself for the avalanche of décor which poured forth, then I must now begin to contemplate how in the world I’m going to fit everything back where I found it. ’Tis the season, indeed, short as it may be.

I’m sure I am not alone in discovering that, upon surveying the annual spread of lights and battery-operated trinkets, there are always some casualties carried over from the previous holiday season lights that no longer twinkle, animated knick knacks that have become somewhat more stationary, garland that was torn by the wind… whatever the case may be.

This year, remembering I had taken my remaining lights and

tossed them in the trash in frustration somewhere between Christmas ’16 and the dropping of the ball in Times Square, I knew I was in the market for replacements. Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might fit.

Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single.

Night. On the hour, at least.

How many days until Christmas?

And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one.

Suffice to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “flip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional.

Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the final present is wrapped.

Darn, wrapping paper.

The Annual Service Fair sponsored by Eastern Suffolk BOCES provided hope to parents, and information to social workers and mental health staff.

ESBOCES School Social Worker Jennifer FarnumWeber said, “The fair allows parents the ability to have more control over what programs their children are involved with. With

over 50 vendors, we hope they can find programs that relate to their children’s passions and they can make connections for future support.”

A parent of a 16 year old with autism from Northport found out about the Service Fair from her SEPTA group.

SEPTA stands for Special Education Parent Teacher Association. She shared

that she came to the fair to get help on what to do next. “The paperwork is overwhelming,” she shared, asking that her name not be used. “I have so many questions - Do I get Medicaid first, how do I get services for my son, what agencies should I talk to for respite care.”

A social worker interning at Central Islip attended the fair on the advice of his field supervisor.

He thought the fair was very beneficial allowing him the opportunity to collect information in one place and fill up his “tool box” with resources and information on new and improved services that agencies may be offering.

Farnum-Weber said, “We host the fair every year to give mental health staff and parents the opportunity to meet a wide-variety of service providers so everyone can prepare for the future.”

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Vince Miceli was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 47th annual Huntington holiday tournament. The honor came on the heels of his commitment to wrestle Division I at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

to be in his corner this year and look forward to watching him compete at Bloomsburg.”

Anthony Scotto, one of Long Island’s most successful entrepreneurs, understands more than just business – he understands the importance of giving.

Mr. Scotto immigrated to the United States from a fishing village in Monte di Procida, Italy when he was eighteen years old. Once in America, he went to work for his uncle in Brooklyn at Romano’s Restaurant as a dishwasher. As someone who always felt that “work was a good thing,” he wasn’t afraid to work hard. As an immigrant, Mr. Scotto felt a great hunger to do something, so he progressed from washing dishes to cooking meals to eventually venturing off with his two brothers and opening Scotto’s Pizzeria.

Anthony Scotto’s newest business venture, One North, a Mediterranean style restaurant located at the old Maine Maid Inn in Jericho, is nothing less than exquisite. This historical building sat empty for just about 10 years when, finally, local residents reached out to Mr. Scotto to ask if he was interested in renovating the building and opening a new business there. Two and a half years later, Mr. Scotto had it completely revamped, and it now looks better than ever!

One North offers a unique and tasteful menu, which Mr.

Scotto assisted in creating. It has a modern décor, which was inspired by European coastal living. A mozzarella bar creates a cozy setting near the kitchen; beautiful private event rooms are available to rent out; and you’ll never be left cold on their patio, which holds multiple heaters and a luxurious fireplace.

In the spirit of giving, Anthony Scotto donated $75,000 from his first week in business at the new location to the following charitable organizations: Heroes To Heroes Foundation, Cohen Children’s Medical Center and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. He knows what it means to struggle and feels that everyone has a duty to help the less fortunate. It was nothing less than obvious, upon speaking about helping those in need with Mr. Scotto, that he truly has a generous heart. Creativity Out of the Classroom

LI Academy Photography Teacher Liz Grafer likes to get her students out of the classroom so they can learn to recognize where and how to tap into creativity.

She uses field trips as an extension of the classroom

to maximize the impact and potential they have as artists through their craft.

“The location not only provides inspiration, but serves as a backdrop for the subject matter they must photograph,” she

explained. “The resulting work could not have been replicated in the classroom and can also be added to their portfolios.” Here’s her class at a recent excursion to Smith Point Beach.

HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door.

They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation.

When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout.

This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising.

Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed.

Poetry Reading enjoyment of the festival’s crowds, music and cheer, while seventh-grader Sophie Blumenthal’s “A Magical Night” shares the happiness of a family celebrating its holiday traditions.

The students were inspired to create their literary pieces as a component of the middle school English curriculum

and selected to read their poetry by a school committee. According to English teacher Kayleen Everitt, the public reading is an effective way for students to enhance their oral communication skills.

Two Port Jefferson Middle School students shared a unique opportunity when they read their poetry to hundreds of spectators during the opening ceremony of the 22nd annual Dickens Festival in Port Jefferson.

Eighth-grade student Heather Quiggle wrote “Winter in Port Jefferson,” which highlights the

Accreditation is a self-evaluation process that schools voluntarily undergo to demonstrate they are meeting a defined set of performance standards.

The accreditation process helps schools – and ultimately students – to continuously grow and improve.

Following the self-study, a team of volunteer educators from Association member schools conducts an on-site peer review visit to observe school operations and interview various stakeholders.

The visiting team makes its recommendation to the Middle States Association Commissions, which votes on the accreditation.

INTERFACE FOOD DRIVE - This year the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Thanksgiving Food Drive provided more families in need with hearty Thanksgiving meals than it ever has before. Through the drive 942 families and a total of 3,912 people in need in Brookhaven Town received a Thanksgiving Day meal. Last year the drive provided Thanksgiving meals to 823 families in need.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES has earned reaccreditation by the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools, a worldwide leader in accreditation and continuous school improvement.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES was accredited as a “Learning Service Provider” encompassing all of the schools and services that are provided to districts.

Members of the Port Jefferson School District music department entertained hundreds of spectators with seasonal music during various performances at the 22nd annual Charles Dickens Festival in Port Jefferson Village on December 2nd-3rd.

Musical ensembles included the elementary fifth-grade select choir, the elementary/middle school chamber orchestra, the middle and high

school orchestras, and the high school chamber choir; performing holiday favorites throughout the weekend. Students from the middle and high school orchestras also performed chamber music at the Port Jefferson Public Library.
