Members of P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team were invited to visit the local branch office of the National Weather Service (NWS) as a result of team members Liam Sauer’s and Andrew Zhang’s first-place medal in the MeteorologyClimate event at the 2015 National Science Olympiad Tournament.

During the visit, nine members of the 2015 team,

along with their parents and team advisor/Gelinas science department chairperson Gary Vorwald, toured the National Weather Service office located on the campus of Brookhaven National Labs in Upton, NY. Upon arrival they were greeted by meteorologist Gary Conte, who spoke with them about how the NWS forecasts and prepares for severe weather. The group

was also invited to tour the facility where weather data is collected and forecasts are developed. The visit ended with a launch of a weather balloon, which is launched at over 150 sites across the United States twice each day. It carries instruments through the atmosphere and measures temperature, humidity, air pressure, and wind.

Shelters Need You r Help

I would like to br ing some much ne eded attention to our local animal shelters. This past summer, I decided to volunteer at the Babylon Animal Shelter. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home.

Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e adopt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r.

MY LIFE STORY

Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close.

Let’s begin at the beginning.

When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third.

Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done.

I learned to hate my own

name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself.

When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad?

No, because words are words and they don’t affect me.

My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy.

We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing.

At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words.

My hobbies, besides writing,

include playing video games and streaming on Twitch.

Like most people, I wish I could change some of the things that I have done. People ask me what I want to do when I grow up. Some people say, “You’ll be a bum on the streets.” I don’t listen to them because they’re the same ones who think drugs are good.

After everything I’ve learned, there is no better mystery than life itself. What’s the point of living? It’s to achieve your life’s goals. My goal is to be a great YouTuber; I know I can. * Names changed to protect students’ right to privacy.

Messages of Hope

Following the tragedy that Paris experienced this November, 42 Ward Melville High School students worked collaboratively to create a profoundly emotional video message for the citizens of that nation. The piece

came together as a result of a request received by teacher Cortney Weisman from Class of 2007 alumni and WBLI on-air morning show correspondent “John Online” Mingione.

The students, which primarily came from

the school’s Advanced Placement French and French D classes, worked with teachers Eric Jourdain and Melissa Quiros to translate messages of hope, peace and inspiration submitted

by Long Island listeners of the WBLI and WBAB radio stations. Many of the students then volunteered to record the translated messages and appear in a video production for the Long Island radio.

The Seiskaya Ballet’s Nutcracker has become a perennial holiday favorite on Long Island. This year’s staging of the Nutcracker is again scheduled for six performances: December 18th through 21st at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts.

This classical ballet rendition has earned praise

from critics and audiences alike. The cast will be led by guest artist Nick Coppula (Cavalier) formerly with the Pittsburgh Ballet plus Seiskaya’s award winning principal dancer Alexandra Palma with 1st soloists Jenna Lee, Natasha Butkevich, Diana Atoian, Brianna Jimenez, Madison Mursch and Jamie Bergold.

The company’s 2015 Nutcracker season should again garner praise.

The Seiskaya Ballet’s Nutcracker is considered Long Island’s premier Nutcracker production.

Exploring Careers Rocky Point High School students had the chance to learn about a variety of future postgraduation options during two interactive learning experiences.

The school’s College and Career Prep class recently had the chance to visit and explore the campus of Stony Brook University.

During a walking tour, the students gained a better

understanding of the large and diverse school campus and sought answers to individual questions during a 45-minute question and answer session with a college admissions officer.

Students in Dorothy Burns’ Sports and Entertainment Marketing class learned about the business side of the Long Island Ducks baseball team during a workshop

with Sean Smith, an account executive for the LI Ducks. Throughout the program, Mr. Smith spoke about the company’s marketing efforts, use of promotional materials, the team’s target market, how they build brand awareness, the importance of sponsorships for the company and the different careers available in the field of sports marketing.

COMMUNITY DAY - On November 21st, community organizations joined together at the Stony Brook University celebration of friends and neighbors called “Three Village Community Day,” held at LaValle Stadium. This family-friendly event included food and activities with free parking for the community. Parents from the Three Village Elementary school PTAs worked together to raise funds by selling football game tickets, with the proceeds going to benefit local schools.

Students Feeding Students Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Leo Club members donated their time to stand in front of Stop and Shop in Miller Place and collect canned goods for local children in

need on November 15th.

Throughout the day, the students, with the assistance of their advisors Brian Chalmers and Kristine Vaccaro, collected 50 boxes of food and $250

in cash and gift cards.

The donations will be distributed to families in need by Island Harvest as part of the organization’s Students Feeding Students Challenge.

HOLIDAY MAGIC - The 5th Annual Mount Sinai Turkey Trot, hosted by the Mount Sinai Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) Club, was recently held. The annual trot raises money for Holiday Magic, a not-for-profit organization that dedicates itself to making the holidays special for less fortunate children and their families. The Mount Sinai SADD club will purchase holiday gifts for 67 children, largely as a result of the participation at the annual 5K event.

I recently came upon a column I wrote just about a decade ago for this very space, detailing that strange phenomenon that occurs around this time of year – the annual appearance of the species known as “the male shopper.” Following is an excerpt…

Men can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24th in 25 minutes.

A truer statement has never been made. One of two things happens when men make their one trip

to the store each year – they either A) pick out something “useful” like an appliance – toaster, vacuum, the big-screen TV they always wanted; or B) buy everything in sight to make up for their lack of shopping prowess during the rest of the year.

Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping.

Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.

Talent, indeed.

I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner.

So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started.

Plus, they still have to wrap.

Blood Donations Needed The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to end the year with real meaning by donating blood for hospital patients in need.

Holiday activities, severe weather and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, can pull people away from their regular blood donation schedules. This creates a greater need for blood donations this time of year, especially around the winter holidays. To encourage donations, all those who come to donate December 23rd,

2015, through January 3rd, 2016, will get a longsleeve Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.

Jamie Czesak made her first blood donation on December 27th, 2013. “As I spent Christmas with my family, I realized how lucky I was to have my health and how we never really know when our last Christmas will be. I decided that I would face my fears and do one of the few things I can do to help save someone’s life donate blood.”

Summit a Success the latest developments in detection, treatment and reconstruction.

Hundreds of guests attended this year’s program which was hosted

by Kristin Thorne, WABCTV Eyewitness News Correspondent. Jennifer Griffin, National Security Correspondent for Fox News Channel and breast cancer survivor, served as keynote speaker and presented a touching speech titled “Entering the Cancer War Zone.”

“Fighting breast cancer is as much psychological as it is a physical fight. And the one thing I learned is that feeling beautiful through that process is very important and may even affect the outcome of the treatment,” explained

Griffin. For her efforts in the fight against cancer, Griffin received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the LI Breast Cancer Summit.

The Breast Cancer Summit was created to assist those diagnosed with breast cancer, to bring together community and resources, and offer knowledge and support.

The event attracts hundreds of attendees, including cancer experts, researchers, doctors, nurses, breast cancer survivors, and advocacy groups. The program covers such topics as innovative breast cancer treatment, the latest cancer research updates and care, and progress achieved in the fight against cancer.

Toys for Tots Donation Drive Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 17th year.

This drive will run until December 18th. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery.

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters. This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into responsible, productive,

patriotic citizens and community leaders. Please help your community by dropping off a donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike.

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas.

When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one.

That Christmas, a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot program was so successful that the Marine Corps

adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign and since then has distributed over 370 million toys to more than 173 million children.

In 2009 Griffin received the news which would change her life and become the biggest battle she would ever fight.

She was diagnosed with stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. After 17 rounds of chemotherapy,

a double mastectomy and radiation treatments, she was declared in remission.

She is a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness.

“Since my return to work after cancer, I have thrown myself into working with wounded warriors, especially amputees and those suffering from posttraumatic stress - perhaps we share a bit of common ground - scars inside and out....I may look fully healed but there are triggers that take me back to that traumatic time.

Programs such as this Breast Cancer Summit are vitally important resources for those touched by this disease so we can learn what resources exist and how we can access them,” said Griffin. “I am

honored to be a part of such an important event that attracts leading experts who share insight and information with the public.”

Griffin joined Fox News Channel (FNC) in October 1999 as a Jerusalem-based correspondent.

Since 2007 Griffin has reported daily from the Pentagon where she questions senior military leaders, travels to war zones with the Joint Chiefs and Secretaries of Defense, and reports on all aspects of the military.

Students Join Forces High school, middle school and elementary school students in the Port Jefferson School District teamed up to build a new native species garden in front of the BOCES

building on High Street in Port Jefferson.

The students, who are all members of their schools’ respective environmental clubs, worked throughout the day to prepare
