Score For Port Jeff Soccer Players The Port Jefferson School District congratulates Earl L. Vandermeulen High School star soccer players Hailey Hearney and Morgan Bullis, who were named All-County and All-Division, respectively, and honored at the recent All-County dinner. Hailey finished the season leading Suffolk County in goals,

scoring 21 while adding another two assists.

“Hailey has a knack for finding the back of the net as she is an intelligent player who often puts herself in position to score,” said coach Taylor Forstell.

Morgan finished the season with five goals and two assists and, according

to Forstell, was the heart and soul of the middle of the field playing the center midfield position. “Her onfield energy helped to turn over many opposing team’s possessions and she was a force both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.”

Five Port Jefferson Middle School students and one Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student raised their voices at the annual Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival when they read their original poems during the evening lantern lighting dedication ceremony on Nov. 30.

Chen (“Wintertime”), Alice Snyder (“A Snowy Night”), Ava Tuccillo (“Winter”) and Devon Welsch (“Snowflakes”) and seventh-grader Vivian Kim (“First Snow”) took center stage for the yearly tradition around the village as each lantern was dedicated with a plaque for the weekend festival.

Eighth-grader Ruby Ray read her poem (“The Village Dickens Plan”) at the Dec. 1 morning opening ceremony. Senior Jonathan Kelsch recited a memorial piece he wrote to his friend Dylan, a former Port Jefferson student, in front of the lantern that was dedicated to his life.

“We are so proud of the

efforts that not only did these students put into the creative process, but to be so well-spoken and poised in front of a large crowd of people,” Monica Consalvo, who organized the students’ participation in the weekend event.

Jen Dzvonar introduced Fernando to her fellow Rotarians and invited Joe Coniglione to tell them why this young man was selected for this honor. Joe presented a long list of Fernando’s accomplishments, including the fact that he is an academic standout with a 96 GPA, has been involved in 9 AP classes,

and is a Fall 2 sport athlete, excelling in both football and soccer.

As a kicker, Fernando has an almost perfect record, known for successfully making 35 yard field goals. This student is also a track star, one of the elite in the state at 400 meter races.

He has the opportunity to play the 3 sports in college.

December’s Charity of the Month is:

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living.

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

Leslie was referred by her Care Coordinator to receive Options Home and Community Based Services, HCBS. Her history included abuse by people in authority and makes her shy when meeting new people and unsure about anything new or unfamiliar. Leslie and her husband have been married for several years and as they’ve aged, they have developed some health issues.

With minimal cooking skills, Leslie wanted to be able to prepare healthy meals for herself and

Leslie’s symptoms caused her such distress that she rarely left her apartment unless accompanied by her husband or mother.

Even though her mother lives only a half a mile from her home, she has not walked there independently in 3-years. Leslie was determined to overcome her fear so that she could live a more fulfilled life…..go to stores, visit family and take an art class. For months, Leslie worked to become more familiar with the walking route to her mom’s. She gradually grew more comfortable and walked with an Options employee until she was ready to take the walk on her own.

Leslie completed her first solo trip to her mother’s home and her family celebrated her accomplishment! They were so impressed by her courage that they became more involved in helping her achieve other goals. Now, with the support of her family, Leslie is applying for a gym membership and plans to work with her Options HCBS provider on becoming more fit and healthy. Leslie is less fearful of her community.

She has learned that each small step brings her closer to the life she wants for herself and her family.

By Patricia Scali of Bellmore, New York Nothing says The Holidays like dessert, and Patricia Scali’s family recipe for Red Devil Cake should add delicious festivity to your home this season! When Patricia and her two siblings were growing up, her late mom, Ethel Henry, began whipping up this delectable confection during World War II. When the war ended and the whole family was reunited, their Red Devil Cake tradition continued.

Patricia’s mom, Ethel, baked this cake for the entire family as her three children were growing up. As Patricia recalls, “My father loved my mom’s famous Red Devil Cake, and so did all three of us kids. You’re going to love it!”

Mel B: From Spice Girl to Survivor

Melanie Brown aka Mel B has reigned supreme as the spiciest of her band mates since bursting onto the entertainment scene as Scary Spice in 1996, with the group’s #1 hit Wannabe. She instantly began making headlines, and she never stopped. Her tempestuous marriages and some romantic near misses, including her split from Eddie Murphy heard ‘round the world, have at times overshadowed her on-camera talent on recent hit shows like UK’s X Factor and America’s Got Talent.

In her recently released memoir, Brutally Honest, Mel opens up about her ten year marriage to exhusband, Stephen Belafonte, whom she claims kept her captive with multiple forms of abuse. She is finally speaking out and advocating for victims of domestic partner abuse, and she is excited about 2019’s Spice Girls reunion tour.

Allison Kugel: After all you have been through, how are your spirits?

Mel B: Obviously, I’m still on my healing path and it’s going to be an ongoing thing. I’m taking care of myself, meditating, doing my Reiki and eating well. I actually couldn’t be happier right now. I know there

are more happier times to come, but right now I’m in a really good place and it’s taken me a long time to even get to this place, so I’m thankful.

Allison Kugel: Let’s go back a bit.

What did the Spice Girls fame of the 1990s feel like for you?

Mel B: It was tiring, but we really didn’t care because it was five girls together who had each other, living our dream life. We were living in England, struggling financially, not having much to eat, convincing people to let us borrow their recording studios so that we could sit down, and write and [record] our music. There was a phase of a couple of years where it was really tough. When we got to release our first single, Wannabe, and we signed with a record company and got Simon Fuller involved to manage us, it was really good, happy times that all five of us had dreamed of. We were traveling the world, singing, performing, dancing, writing music and making a movie. It was a really beautiful few years. Of course, we were tired, because we didn’t allow ourselves any time off. We knew that we had to soar through life like a big tornado and strike while the iron was hot.

Allison Kugel: What do you feel you came into this life as Melanie Brown to learn?

Mel B: The number one thing is that I come from a white mother and a black father. Back in the 1970s when they got together and had me, that was seen as something that wasn’t really done. They had a lot of things that they had to overcome in bringing me into the world and raising me. I had to find my own identity. Apart from the likes of Neneh Cherry and maybe Tracy Chapman, there really wasn’t anybody that I could look up to where I felt like I belonged, or anyone who I felt like I even looked like. For me, it was all about creating a path where hopefully other mixedrace girls, and other mixed-race kids could actually follow. I do believe I am here, somewhat, to make it okay to be in the skin that you’re in.

Allison Kugel: Obviously, the situation with your most recent ex, Stephen Belafonte, is extremely contentious. In general, how are you navigating co-parenting your three daughters with three different fathers in the picture?

Mel B: My oldest is nineteen, so I had to do the every other weekend and certain weekdays for eighteen years.

I’ve never said a bad word about any of their fathers to my daughters.

Angel’s eleven years old and she sees her dad (Eddie Murphy) on a regular basis. She’s actually going to his house [this] week to do the family Christmas card, which is really lovely.

My seven-year-old, Madison, that’s all happening through the courts, so that is kind of out of my hands. One thing I do with all my three girls, is I make sure they know that they’re loved, and that they came from a place of a loving relationship. Even though they didn’t quite work out, and me and their dads didn’t stay together, they all know that they came from a lot of love. One thing that is mandatory is that I always make it a very exciting thing when I send them off to their fathers.

Allison Kugel: After the abuse you experienced, are you frightened for your daughter, Madison, when you send her off to see your exhusband, Stephen?

Mel B: All I can say is that I fought through the courts for her to have mandatory therapy every Saturday with a specialized therapist who is very aware of the situation. If there was anything for the therapist to be concerned about she would be able to flag it, based on the kind of intense therapy that she is doing with Madison. I have to trust and believe that if there was anything that I should be majorly concerned about,

I’ve got a professional right there that can spot it before I do.

Allison Kugel: I would imagine it took courage to keep a lot of the more explicit passages in your book. What was the hardest part, not just to write, but to keep in the final draft?

Mel B: Everything that is out there now is pretty salacious, and I know it seems so random about the sex and the drugs I wrote about. The physical and emotional abuse had already kind of been out there [in the media]. I just wanted to make sure that I clarified and made my puzzle understandable.

When you read my book, you do understand that certain things were due to coping mechanisms, which are very common with somebody that’s in an abusive relationship. The book addresses things like why it took me so long to leave. It’s because you’re trapped, and you don’t have friends and family because you’ve been isolated due to how your abuser does things. That’s why in the back of my book, I put the 15 warning signs of what an abusive relationship looks like. Sometimes we don’t know until it is too late, and you’re heavily in it. I want my book to be an education and insight into what it looks like to be in an abusive relationship.

Allison Kugel: Why make the recent public declaration that your middle daughter Angel’s father, Eddie Murphy, is the love of your life?

Mel B: One of the parts of the book that my friend couldn’t quite piece together was… why was I at my most vulnerable when my abuser came into my life. I’d just had Angel.

She was two months old and then the monster came into my life. My friend and co-writer, Louise [Gannon], was trying to figure out why I was feeling so vulnerable. Then it became, “Oh, you felt vulnerable because of the Eddie situation, so let’s talk about that.” I wanted to be able to talk about it and express it. I didn’t even fully understand it when we started talking about it; what went wrong and how it all kind of fell apart. It was important for me to put it all down on paper and do it from my recollection. I needed to remind myself that I do know what a loving, respectful relationship is, because I had that and much more with Eddie. It was so important for me to put pen to paper with that, because I also had never spoken about it. I wanted people to know, and I wanted my daughter to know that it was a very loving courtship. It didn’t end well, but it was one of the biggest love stories of my life.

Allison Kugel: You’re about to run off to a Spice Girls meeting later.

Can you share?

Mel B: It’s about our 2019 tour. We put six shows up for grabs and we ended up doing thirteen because they sold out. We’re going to be talking about staging, choreography and our dancers. It will be all of us on tour, but without Victoria. She sends all of us her blessing, but she has always been adamant that performing is not really her thing. She’s busy with her family and her fashion empire. I still have hope that at some point she joins us, but as of right now she’s not.

Allison Kugel: The Scary Spice of twenty years ago was brash and bold, and very tell it like it is. You were the tough girl. After everything you’ve been through publicly, with heartbreak and abuse and people seeing that you are quite vulnerable, who will Scary Spice be as you head out on the 2019 Spice Girls tour?

Mel B: I’m still the same. A little more educated and more aware, and I would say more honest which could be misinterpreted as being even more brash and even more loud (laughs).

The Holidays are a time of hope, love, joy and reflection.

It’s a time to slow down, put our routines on hold and spend time with family. For those of us who are fortunate enough to have some time off, we are granted the best gift of all... the ability to be present with the people we love.

For me, the days that fall between December 24th and January 2nd create a sacred pocket of space between me and the rest of the world. I can simply Be. Much of the time we forget that we are human beings, and not human doings. While some celebrate the season with raucous affairs and big crowds, I prefer getting cozy close to home, and I bake a ton! There is no wrong way to do the Holidays!

Board of Ed Honors Student Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Annalisa Welinder was commended for her many accomplishments at a recent board of education meeting. Introduced by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Casciano as a truly exceptional student both in the classroom and in the concert hall, Annalisa stood with pride as Principal Christine Austen spoke glowingly of her

many accomplishments throughout her educational career in Port Jefferson schools.

In addition to being named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program, Annalisa has challenged herself by taking 13 Advanced Placement courses at the high school and takes an applied linear algebra class through Suffolk County Community College.

An avid reader, poet and athlete, she has a talent and passion for music and has attended Julliard’s pre-college division music program since childhood to perfect her exceptional violin skills.

She also recently served as concertmaster for Julliard’s Pre-College Centennial Gala at Lincoln Center, alongside world-renowned classical musicians.

Operation Remember Following nearly two decades of continued conflict, veterans of recent wars will soon receive the recognition they have earned on those foreign battle-fronts back on the home-front.

American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts located in Setauket, Stony Brook and Port Jefferson, the Long Island State Veterans Home and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (District 5, Setauket) announced a partnership to update four existing local war

memorials. The memorials will commemorate the sacrifice made by the latest generations of America’s service members of the Cold War, the Gulf Wars and the Global War on Terror.

The partnership has established a Veterans Memorial Fund, and is calling for donations to cover the cost of updating the memorials to include new plaques and monument stones to be inscribed with the names of Wars since the war in Vietnam.

The partnership hopes to complete the updates in time for Memorial Day 2019. Organizers expect the updates to memorials located in Stony Brook Village, on the Setauket Village Green, at the Setauket Veterans Memorial Park and along the Port Jefferson harbor front to cost approximately $30,000 and be funded through donations made to the fund.

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the

following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill.

Have at least two ways to escape from every room.

Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes.

Conduct practice drills at least twice a year.

2. Install and maintain

smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire.

Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.
