The Harry Report By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked by a longtime friend and reader of this column for an update on “Harry.”

For those who may have missed Chapters I & II, Harry is my slightly psychotic goldfish, purchased for all of 17¢ to serve as a “friend” to another fish I had won at a local carnival. Well, one week later, “Harvey” the carnie fish was floating upside down and Harry was riding solo.

Now, nearly two months later, he is still enjoying his reign of the fishbowl,

alternately cowering behind (or amongst the branches) of his tree, and darting madly from one side (do round bowls have “sides”?) to the other, occasionally clunking into the glass as he zigs when he should have zagged.

Hopefully, there hasn’t been any permanent brain damage. It’s difficult to tell for sure.

One of his favorite pastimes seems to be watching me cook. As I prepare the food on the counter, he eagerly watches, as if hoping for a morsel to taste. I suppose it would be a nice change

from his dried flakes, although he does manage to suck those down with the ferocity of a small, finned Hoover®.

So that’s the update on Harry, for all who care to know. Hopefully, he’ll survive the holiday season and ring in the New Year with us all. Who knows, maybe Santa will even bring him a new fishy friend if he’s good! Although, based on the last experiment in cohabitation, perhaps I should leave well enough alone.

Brookhaven Memorial Hospital held its 2014 Hospital Ball on November 15th. This year, guests donned Venetian Masks to add to the festivities.

The event had over 460 attendees dining and dancing at East Wind Inn & Spa in Wading River.

Some of them expressed their creative side with masks ranging from the court jester worn by attendees, Ralph Maust, and John Sullivan to the distinctive long nose Zanni mask sported by past Chairman of the Board, Robert Schwartz.

Aside from collecting non-perishable food items from students and turkeys from teachers and administrators, the drive also collected toiletries and cleaning supplies.

County Executive Steve Bellone and Health Commissioner James Tomarken recently announced upcoming Opioid Overdose Prevention ProgramNarcan Training Classes.

The training, which meets New York State Department of Health requirements, will enable participants to recognize an opioid overdose, administer intranasal Narcan and take additional steps until EMS arrives. Participants will receive a certificate of completion and an emergency resuscitation kit that includes one dose of nasal Narcan. Blood Donations Needed

FREEZIN’ FOR A REASON - On November 22nd, the Town of Brookhaven and the Special Olympics of New York hosted the fifth annual “Polar Plunge: Freezin’ for A Reason” at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. More than 1000 plungers, including Councilwoman Jane Bonner, Councilman Kevin LaValle and other Town employees, braved the ice cold water of the Long Island sound to collectively raise over $168,000 for the Special Olympics. The team that raised the most money was the “Petro Polar Plungers.”

Raising Awareness In an effort to raise awareness about juvenile diabetes, Earl.

L. Vandermeulen High School sophomores Jiwon Woo and Emma Schoepflin held a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association on November 14th.

Both girls said they felt that not many of their peers understood what

juvenile diabetes is, and they wanted to change that.

“I wouldn’t have known what it was either,” Schoepflin said. “The only reason I know is because of Jiwon.” Jiwon, she said, has had juvenile diabetes since she was 6 years old.

To raise awareness, the Port Jefferson students sold gray juvenile diabetes

awareness ribbons to teachers and students, held a bake sale and decorated the school with the color blue. Through their campaign, they raised $400.

The girls plan to continue their mission, growing their fundraiser during the next few years.

High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
