In an effort to share best practices and enrich teachers’ understanding of new educational strategies, Port Jefferson’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School’s pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and firstgrade teachers recently took part in a Fundations training workshop with Kerry Leo from Da Vinci Education and Research

Center.

Fundations helps to lay the groundwork for lifelong literacy as students learn to gain enjoyment from reading.

The program emphasizes phonemic awareness, reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension among other strategies. Pre-K through second-graders at the school are engaged

in Fundations activities and lessons within their classrooms daily. During the workshop, the teachers shared their ideas on the diagnostic-prescriptive instructional approach, which focuses directly on the student and helps to establish a teaching method for each child.

The Christmas Closet I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle.

To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig.

To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection.

Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors.

(And now, you, dear readers.)

It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within.

Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks.

The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own.

However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters.

Through a PowerPoint presentation and songs, the children shared what being grateful means to them. Family members then helped them to create a unique holiday craft in which they wrote on strips of orange paper what they

are thankful for, attached them together to form a pumpkin shape, added leaves and vines in green paper for a finished product of a table centerpiece for their home’s celebration of Thanksgiving.

During the months of November and December, the Town of Brookhaven presents Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial, an exhibit celebrating the centennial of women’s suffrage in New York State.

The exhibit aims to raise public awareness of the struggle for women’s suffrage and equal rights in New York State from the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention through 1917 when New York State

granted women the right to vote.

The large-scale exhibit at the New York State Museum in Albany opened on November 4th and they created a six-panel traveling exhibition that is displayed on the 2nd floor gallery in the Brookhaven Town Hall. It will be on display through January 1st, 2018 and will return for Women’s History Month in March 2018.

The exhibit was curated

by Jennifer Lemak, PhD,

Chief Curator of History at the New York State Museum. The reproduced panels were covered by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities.

The full exhibition catalog will be available to view in the Historian’s Office after December 1st.

The exhibit can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s ninth-grade global history and geography classes recently took a trip around the world by creating projects highlighting the culture of ancient Greece and its impact on today’s modern world.

Working in small groups, the students researched such topics as food, government, theater, art, architecture, myth

and religion, philosophy, athletics and many others topics as part of the assignment. Using their research, the students then created poster boards and displays highlighting the connection between the two time periods and the contributions traced back to ancient Greece. For example, one group made comparisons between the ancient Greek Olympics and the competition organized today while another created a replica of

a dinner table from ancient Greece and showcased items that were staples in the diet, how it changed over time and how the culture viewed food as art and something beautiful.

Antigone Astounds After weeks of rehearsal, Port Jefferson School District’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Drama Club members recently took to the stage to perform a flawless rendition of Jean Anouilh’s “Antigone”

before fascinated audiences.

Dozens of students took part in the fall production as actors, chorus members and as part of the lighting, audio, stage construction, painting and refreshments crews.

Collaborating

together, the students worked under the direction of Tony Butera to bring the story to life.

The show was adapted

by Lewis Galantiere and inspired by Sophocles’ work of the same name.

Fellowship and Food More than two dozen local seniors received a warm welcome from students and staff as they took part in the annual Port Jefferson Middle School senior citizen luncheon, a spirited afternoon of festive surroundings, friends and seasonal music.

Organized by members of the student council under the leadership of adviser Allison Giannusa, students volunteered throughout the event as servers and greeters and visited with the attendees socially.

Students enthusiastically asked questions about

the seniors’ families and interests and share their own stories in the hopes of creating new friendships.

The senior guests were also treated to two preview scenes from “Antigone,” the high school’s fall drama, and several musical selections.
