Dr. David Taylor, an assistant professor of sustainability at Stony Brook University, recently visited Rocky Point High School and delivered a talk related to environmental stewardship, the con-

nection between literature and conservation, and his own experiences in traveling the world to help support environmental initiatives.

In this first of a four-part Rocky Point

School District STEAM Lecture Series, Dr. Taylor shared stories about traveling with environmental theater groups in Cuba and the impact storytelling can have on environmental

conservation efforts.

He also discussed the development of Nassau and Suffolk counties, and how environmental spaces have been preserved. Middle School and High School students spoke with Dr. Taylor after his presentation to discuss Stony Brook University and its role in sustainability.

“The series is designed to provide students and the community opportunities to interact with professionals in STEAM fields and to generate enthusiasm for pursuing STEAM-related career paths,” said Mr. Aaron Factor, Rocky Point School District’s Director of Math, Science, and Technology.

The next STEAM lecture is slated for ROCKY POINT STEAM LECTURE SERIES - Stony Brook University’s Dr. David Thursday, Jan. 23.

Pre-K Fall Festival Three Village Pre-K students at Nassakeag Elementary School celebrated the fall harvest during a special outdoor festival on the grounds of the outdoor learning center.

Under the direction of teacher Melissa Panasci, the students had prepared for the festival by painting large trees on wooden planks and prepared apple pies.

During the festival, the students “picked” different color apples off the trees they made, decorated pumpkins they picked from a patch in the playground, stuffed scarecrows and even tasted the pies they had prepared.

Family members were able to attend the festival and enjoy celebrating the change of season together.

2019 will mark 40 years The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) has hosted its magical Holiday Festival in Stony Brook Village. This year’s event will take place Sunday, December 8 from 11 am to 6 pm and visitors are sure to be in awe of the featured 14-foot giant puppets on parade.

The procession of puppets, led by Tom Manuel (President and Founder of The Jazz Loft) and a New Orleans Brass Band, will begin at 2:15 pm at the Stony Brook Fire Department in the Harbor Crescent section

of the Village. There will be additional festivities throughout the day including community school bands, a petting zoo, holiday train display, of course, Santa, who arrives with great fanfare aboard a Stony Brook Fire Department truck at 2 pm to the front of the Post Office to hear children’s wishes until 5 pm. He returns in dramatic style at 5:30 pm atop the Stony Brook Fire Department’s 3,000 light float for the annual tree lighting.

There is also the Promenade of Trees competition where families

and community members decorate some 60 holiday trees which stay on display for all to enjoy through January 3. The public will vote in a winner who will receive a $150 Stony Brook Village Gift Certificate, usable in all shops and restaurants. A donation of $25 must accompany the registration form. A portion of your donation will go to the Santa’s Children’s Fund which provides food and clothing for needy children and families. LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! The Charity of the Month for November is: Long Island Cares www.licares.org

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need.

They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

So who faces hunger on Long Island?

More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless.

According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.

There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year.

That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran.

Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits.

So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Additionally, food donations are always welcome. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. St. James Model Railroad Display: The St. James Model Railroad Club presents a 38’ X 48’ O scale train layout, the result of 35 years of continuing improvements, represents Railroading from the Age of Steam to Present Day with many freight and passenger trains running simultaneously in a scenic, imaginative setting. Featured will be many brightly illuminated, scratch‑built structures, animated accessories, bustling towns, a colorful circus and amusement park. Features 11 Trains Running Simultaneously…Up to 15 Trains run per session.

Admission to the train display is by donation to the St. James Model Railroad Club: Adults $2.00, Children 50¢. Please note: The St. James Model Railroad Club train display is not handicap accessible.

Mills Pond Gallery Fine Art Showcase: Member Artist Showcase, which features fine original artwork of sixtytwo member artists, will be on view through December 20. Exhibiting artists hail from 28 communities across Long Island. A wide variety of media is represented including oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, mixed media and photography.

The Beo String Quartet Visits Students in Port Jefferson Middle School had an opportunity to become a part of an engaging musical performance when the Three Village Chamber Players, featuring the Beo String Quartet, visited the school.

Performing a number of classical pieces for students in grades 6-8, the students were encouraged to join in on the creative and collaborative production with musicians Ryan

Ash, Aviva Hakanoglu, Jason Neukom and Sean Neukom, who crafted the entertaining works to connect and inspire the students.

“We are so grateful for these musicians to share their time and talents with our young students,” orchestra teacher Dr. Vanessa Salzman said.

“They not only treated us to a wonderful performance, but engaged and energized the audience to become active

participants and listeners within the chamber music experience.”

The Three Village Chamber Players have been an integral part of the music education experience in Port Jefferson, dedicating their time and sharing their music with students for the past several years.

“We look forward to a continued partnership with them,” added Dr. Salzman.

Brook and Port Jefferson Station, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and the Long Island State Veterans Home announced a partnership to complete a three phased effort to expand memorials located in Stony Brook Village, on the Setauket Village Green, at the Setauket Veterans Memorial Park and along the Port Jefferson harbor.

Phase I of the project, which focused on the Stony Brook and Setauket Village Green sites was completed in time for this past Memorial Day. Phase II, which will renovate the Port Jefferson harbor memorial is nearing completion and will be unveiled on Veterans Day. The final phase will update the Setauket Veterans Memorial Park located along Main Street.

Brook to commemorate the sacrifices made by the latest generations of America’s service members was launched last Veterans Day and has raised nearly $22,000 of the $35,000 needed to complete this three phased effort.

The two signs were designed by the Office of Legislator Hahn to update

the community on the progress of this project and printed and placed by the Town of Brookhaven at the two memorials located on Brookhaven Town parkland.
