with colored powder as they walked the 4K, which started at 9:30 a.m. Prior to the start of the walk, club members led a dance warm up.

Sophomores Emma Schoepflin and JiWon Woo were chosen to serve as Walk for Beauty ambassadors, meeting with the Ward Melville Heritage Organization to

help run and communicate information about the event.

Altogether, the students donated close to $1,000 to the walk, which raises money for breast cancer research. The students plan to continue the tradition of participating in the Walk for Beauty event for years to come.

Ward Melville High School student Emily Pashinsky was named the first-place winner of the Hofstra Celebration of Suburban Diversity 2014 student essay contest.

The contest, which was sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, was developed in collaboration with the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University.

Pashinsky’s piece, which was reviewed by a panel of judges, was assessed based on her content, creativity and organization. The panel unanimously decided that her piece best demonstrated knowledge and a keen interpretation of the diversity issues facing Long Island for future generations.

of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

Additionally, 17 students were named AP scholars for receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. Two members of the Class of 2014 were given the highest honor of National AP Scholar, which is awarded to students receiving an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

W.S. Mount Elementary School students and staff members teamed up with Cub Scout Troop 601 to raise funds and donations for Island Harvest, a food bank that assists individuals throughout Long Island.

Through a school wide food drive, the building

donated more than 2,600 items – or 2,300 pounds of food – to the cause.

To elicit extra support for the worthy cause, members of the troop shared information and statistics during the announcements each morning and Principal Kathryn White pledged to

reward the grade level that donated the most pieces with extra recess time. The winners were the third and fifth-grades.

In addition to the building drive, the Cub Scout Troop collected more than $300 through a weeklong coin drive.

Ten student teams and two administrator/teacher teams participated in the tournament, which required a $5 donation from every player. Each team played two games, with three teams advancing to the final round. In the end, a team made up of junior boys won.

The Riverhead Correctional Facility held a special unveiling ceremony yesterday for its new “Splashes of Hope” mural inside the jail, which was painted by incarcerated youth under the guidance of master muralist, Kirk Larsen. The project was funded and sponsored by “Splashes of Hope,” a Huntington-based nonprofit organization, and made possible through the generous donation of Theresa Santmann of Babylon. Santmann, who is also the Vice President of the organization’s Executive Board, had previously sponsored four mural panels in the jail’s Visiting Room.

Officer George, as the students called him, brought his message to life as he spoke with kindergartners and firstgraders about emergencies and strangers, third- and fourth-graders about nonverbal and verbal bullying, and fifth-graders about cyberbullying.

“Every single kid was focused on Officer George and what he had to say,”

said school Psychologist Allyson Carlson. “We plan to bring him back again next year.”

Parents were invited for a separate evening presentation in which Officer Lynagh, who works with the SCPD’s Community Outreach Bureau, instructed them on how to deal with and properly report cyberbullying.

This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.”

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college.

Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards.

And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building.

Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient.

Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too.

The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently.

Larsen, a lecturer at the Parsons New School in New York City, worked with the incarcerated youth several days a week to produce the massive eighty-five foot mural in the jail’s main corridor.

The mural depicts soothing scenes of nature and water, as well as a bridge which is meant to evoke a sense of passage to brighter times. More than 15 male youth worked on the project. A second

phase, which will begin in the coming months, will include young incarcerated women.

Spooky Strengthening The gymnasium at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in the Rocky Point School District was transformed into a spooktacular display for the 13th Annual Spooky

Gym unit.

During the weeklong program, students tested their locomotive, strength, agility and strategy skills by participating in a 12-station activity center.

Stations included a ghostthemed basketball hoop, hockey dribbling through a “grave yard” and a haunted house scooter trail.

Students Perform With Pianist Three student musicians from the Port Jefferson School District had a oncein a-lifetime opportunity to perform with worldrenowned classical pianist Lang Lang at the Tilles Center on October 26th as part of the Lang Lang Foundation’s 101 Pianists

program.

Senior Ryan Burke, eighth-grader Francine Leung and sixth-grader Noah Teaney were selected along with 97 other gifted piano students from across New York State after a rigorous audition process.

Based on her audition,

Leung was one of three students awarded honorable mention for her high-scores on her audition and was invited to perform a solo selection at Lang Lang’s concert preshow.

Extending A Helping Hand

As part of the school’s character education program, Minnesauke Elementary School students and staff members participate in a number of philanthropic activities each year.

This fall, the building coordinated several support drives for families in need, both locally and abroad.

The annual pajama drive received dozens

of donations from the school community. The new bedtime clothes were collected in conjunction with the Scholastic’s Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive. As part of the effort, the Pajama Program will provide new pajamas and books to children in need.

The school’s student council organized a Soles for Souls drive in conjunction with Stride Right. Minnesauke families

generously donated more than 500 pairs of shoes and boots to the effort, which benefited international communities in need.

In conjunction with Making a Difference Day and to ensure children across Long Island experience an enjoyable Halloween, the building also collected many bags full of gently used costumes for Little Flower and local families.

101 Pianists

Rocky Point Middle School eight-grader Bryant Liu and high school ninthgrader Allen Liu were selected to participate in the Lang Lang 101 Pianists Program at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on October 26th.

The Lang Lang Foundation developed

101 Pianists program, an opportunity for young piano students to learn from and perform with Lang Lang for audiences around the world. During this inspiring event, 100 gifted young piano students from throughout New York State performed under the guidance of the

world’s master of piano.

The Liu brothers were selected for this honor through a rigorous application and audition process and were chosen among more than 200 applicants in New York State.

Dianna D’Amico, a special education aide at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) imagined a way to spread love, pay it forward, and bring smiles to people on Thanksgiving, especially those less fortunate who are dependent on food pantry assistance or live in temporary housing.

Dianna created a campaign, 45 Pies in 45 Days on Facebook and Go Fund Me. She said, “The campaign began on October 13th, forty-five days prior to Thanksgiving.

Contributors can sponsor a pie for $10 for a homeless family or a family in need.

The pie(s) will be delivered prior to Thanksgiving.”

Principal Sue Goltz approved the activity for ESBOCES students at Centereach Academic Center to empower them

to pay it forward and help community members.

The four students involved in making the pies are Robert R., William Floyd UFSD; Gabriella C., Comsewogue CSD; Diana D’Amico, ESBOCES aide; Matthew V., Comsewogue CSD; and Pa’shaun M., William Floyd UFSD. These students are working toward their Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Credential.

They work together, take direction and responsibility, and earn hours and experience. They will receive the credential at graduation in June 2015.

Matthew said, “I learned that you can be a student, a teacher, anyone, and you can make a difference in someone’s life.” The students said they enjoyed working on this project

because they all enjoy cooking and eating. They learned culinary skills and worked on their social skills while working side by side in the school kitchen.

The 45 Pies in 45 Days exceeded its greatest expectations.

With more than a month before Thanksgiving, over 200 pies have been commissioned to be baked for local shelters.

D’Amico said, “Local establishments have donated to the campaign to cover the cost of supplies such as pie ingredients, boxes for the pies, and labels for the boxes. It’s as easy as pie. Sponsor a family in need for $10. Pies, smiles, and love will be spread to those less fortunate this Thanksgiving.”

Grant For Green Roof Approved Earl L. Vandermeulen High School will soon be home to a new green roof, complete with vegetation, thanks to a grant that was awarded to the Port Jefferson School District by the New York State Water Quality Improvement Program.

According to plant facilities administrator Fred Koelbel, the $206,250 grant will allow the district to construct the new 3,400-square-foot green roof

atop an existing flat roof that sits over the boys’ locker room.

Not only will the new green roof be aesthetically pleasing, it’s also environmentally friendly and includes an educational component.

Environmentally, the green roof will be designed to use rainfall to water the vegetation that will be planted, preventing storm water runoff that normally

The project, which will require minimal maintenance once complete, will also allow for an Environmental Club monitoring project. The Environmental Club will be measuring the amount of rainfall absorbed by the foliage, as well as monitoring the temperatures of the classrooms that surround the roof, since the new green roof should keep those classrooms warmer in the winter and cooler in the spring and summer.

Koelbel said he hopes the project will a serve as an example of the green technology that is now available to reduce polluted runoff, improve water quality and restore the habitat of New York’s waterways.

Also in attendace were two local politicans; Tom Cilmi and Steven Flotteron. Tom Cilmi has been serving the people of Suffolk County as a legislator since 2009. Over the years, he has been involved with many business and

community organizations.

Steven Flotteron was elected to serve on Islip’s Town Council in 2006 and has been passionately involved in projects and initiatives that help improve the quality of life of Islip’s residents.

Legislator Tom Cilmi and Councilman Steven Flotteron presented The Mondays at Racine’s Honorees, Carmen DePasquale and Joseph Mastalia, with a citation for being great mentors. The two public officials also presented Mondays at Racine a citation for the wonderful work that is being done.

400 guests were served cocktails, appetizers, dinner and dessert from Marconi Manor Caterers. Nina Etcetera provided entertainment during cocktail hour. D.J. Nina Rizzo kept the party atmosphere going in between speeches and official presentations. Comedian Joey Kola kept the guests laughing with his raw humor. Twelve volunteers helped the evening move smoothly and 65 quality baskets and items were raffled off thanks to the generosity of the community.
