“Some people I met in the service are no longer with us because they lost their battles with depression,” said McLaughlin. “In a small way, doing this ride helps me think of them and lets me know I’m doing my part for them and for other veterans facing challenges.”

In teams of two, the 22 veterans operated pedalpowered kayaks in a physically demanding, fivehour cross-Sound journey. The hot sun, humidity and headwinds made the trip that much more difficult.

The number 22 is significant for this event because it is the estimated number of military veterans who take their own lives each day.

Here’s what the employees had to say about the event:

Devin McLaughlin of East Moriches, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, participated for the second time this year.

“I did the 22 PAC for my brothers and sisters in the armed forces and to support a great cause,” said Probst. “I hope this event helped to bring awareness to this issue because 22 veterans a day taking their own lives is completely unacceptable and preventable.”

“I was so proud to be a part of this great cause,” said Leuschner. “This is the least I could do for our veterans who have done so much for us.”

Leo Tolson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Center Moriches, said, “The trip was exhausting but I wanted to do something to help raise awareness of how many veterans need help.”

NEW YORK STATE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION CASE

NOTICE OF FILING OF SUNRISE WIND LLC’S PHASE I ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CONSTRUCTION PLAN FOR THE SUNRISE WIND NEW YORK CABLE PROJECT

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE, on November 18, 2022, pursuant to Article VII of the New York Public Service Law (the “PSL”), Sunrise Wind LLC (the “Applicant”), a 50/50 joint venture between Orsted North America Inc. and Eversource Investment LLC, will le a copy of its proposed Phase I Environmental Management and Construction Plan (“EM&CP”) with the New York State Public Service Commission (the “NYSPSC”) related to the Sunrise Wind New York Cable Project (the “Project”). The Project will deliver power from the Sunrise Wind Farm (“SRWF”)—which is under a 25-year Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certi cate (“OREC”) contract with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (“NYSERDA”)—located in federal waters on the Outer Continental Shelf, to the existing electrical grid in New York State.

Construction associated with Phase I of the Project includes: the establishment of several laydown yards and work areas necessary to construct the Project, civil works at the Project’s new onshore converter station (the “OnCS–DC”), certain civil works in New York State Department of Transportation-controlled rights of way, the installation and use of certain equipment in the Intercoastal Waterway adjacent to the Smith Point County Park, and expansion work at the existing Holbrook Substation. All of the work associated with Phase I of the Project will occur in the Town of Brookhaven. The Applicant intends to le its post-Phase I EM&CP(s), which will cover the remainder of the scope of the Project, in 2023. The post-Phase I EM&CP(s) will similarly include the opportunity for public review and comment prior to approval.

The EM&CP describes the construction procedures and environmental protection measures proposed to be used for the Project, including but not limited to: the location of the Project, proposed construction methods, construction noti cations, vegetation removal, traffic management, noise minimization, water quality standards, contaminated soil and water handling, stormwater management, terrestrial and marine rare, threatened, and endangered species protections, and many other measures to be implemented during the construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of the Project. SRW developed the EM&CP in conformance with the requirements of the conditions appended to the Project’s Certi cate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (“CECPN”) and in consultation with the New York State Department of Public Service, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State Department of State, New York State Department of Transportation, and the Town of Brookhaven.

Members of Rocky Point High School’s Math Honor Society and Science Honor Society attended a lecture at Stony Brook University geared toward high school students with an interest in math and science. Dr. Álvaro de Rújula, one

of the world’s leading theoretical physicists from CERN, the European Center for Nuclear Research, presented “Creativity in the Arts and Sciences,” a motivational talk about science and the future. After the talk the

students had a Q&A with the scientists who work for Stony Brook.

“It was a great experience and exposed our students to some higher-level physics,” math teacher Janece Alfredson said.

teens who need them the most. Started by Patricia Poggi, the effort is inspired by her three sons Edward, Jeremy and Patrick and involves the entire family and the local community.

It grew out of the family’s holiday tradition of “Poggi Plaid Pajamas” when they decided as a family that they wanted to share their warm and happy feeling with those in need.

Now an annual event, it started with a simple bin on the family porch to including organizations with drop-off

boxes. Their goal last year was to gather over 1,000 pajamas and they are working with everyone to make sure this year is the best yet.

“I am proud to partner with EJ’s PJs and the Poggi family to help deliver the warmth of the holidays to everyone. I thank Patricia and the boys for all they have done and invite everyone who is able to visit my office to donate. Let’s make sure that all of our children and teens have what they need,” stated Senator Mattera.

Since Veterans Day occurs in November, our Charity of the Month is one of Suffolk County’s foremost advocates for the interests of our veterans, the Ronkonkoma-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide range of support services to Suffolk County veterans by connecting them with affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, case management, financial and legal referrals, employment assistance programs, and food pantries to help combat food insecurity.

This article in particular focuses on one important component of MHAW’s veteran services, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Named to honor the memory of an Iraq War hero and Army medic from Mt. Sinai who lost his battle with PTSD, the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project is a peer-to-peer initiative offered in collaboration with the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

The Dwyer Project serves veterans, service members, and their families with such post-service transitional issues as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury, although a formal diagnosis is not required for participation. They offer weekly peer groups both in person and virtual, and they also host monthly in-person community resource activities as well as a bi-monthly senior veteran group.

The Dwyer Project’s trained “Veteran Peer Mentors” have served in various branches of the Armed Forces and understand the reintegration needs of those who have been in the military, regardless of era or branch of service. This Project accepts all veterans, no matter their discharge status. All group sessions are confidential and anonymous in a safe, and trusting environment, free of judgment.

“Peer specialists are critical allies for our veterans,” says Colleen Merlo, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. “They understand what other veterans are going through and can offer

As described by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, peer support workers are “people who have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support workers help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.”

It is a true power to have this type of communication,” said one a local veteran that is involved with The Dwyer Project.

“My facilitators are fantastic in organizing programs and ideas for how to help each other. The group is fundamental to what we need. When you get veterans together and get them talking, they can work out their issues. This is one of the most important programs for veterans I have ever seen.”

The Dwyer Project’s free, confidential, peer-to-peer approach has attracted support from both veterans and mental health professionals statewide. In fact, this year’s state budget includes funding for this Project in all 62 counties. Additionally, a national veteran peer initiative is pending in Congress, and it all started here in Suffolk County.

Legendary Drummers Face Off At Jazz Loft’s Drum Summit

The Jazz Loft will bring the drums to center stage on Friday, November 18 at 7 p.m. by welcoming legendary drummer Ronnie Zito, who played, toured, and recorded with

Bobby Darin. Zito will face off against Stony Brook alumnus Dr. Darrell Smith in a friendly drum battle at the Drum Summit event.

During the early years of his career, Zito toured

with Peggy Lee, drummed for the Woody Herman big band and began to earn a reputation as an elite studio drummer. During the 70’s and 80’s Zito worked with Cher, Roberta

Port Jefferson Peer Leaders Gift Children Halloween Costumes

The Port Jefferson School District’s Peer Leadership Club collected and donated dozens of Halloween costumes for local children.

The students, along with advisers Ms. Kristin Britt and Mrs. Melissa Zinger, set

out to make Halloween an even more festive one for children assisted by Port Jefferson-based Give Kids Hope Thrift and Donation Center.

“It was a great success,” Ms. Britt said, in her office at Earl L. Vandermeulen

High School, which was overflowing with costumes and bags that were delivered to the organization in time for children to get dressed up for their trick-or-treating adventures.

“It’s a huge honor to be able to welcome Ronnie Zito to the Jazz Loft,” said Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel. “His contributions to jazz are incredible and his many years with Woody Herman and Bobby Darin are just two highlights of a career that has spanned seven decades.”

In addition to being a bandleader and drummer, Dr. Smith is a highly respected and gifted

educator. His current tenure as Director of Jazz Education and Performance at the worldrenowned education program at Jazz House Kids has given him a platform to spread his passion for jazz to hundreds of talented young musicians around the city.

Zito and Smith will be joined by a section featuring Mike Hall on bass, Rich Iacona on piano, Steve Salerno on guitar, Eric Kay on tenor saxophone, and Tom Manuel on cornet.

Ticket prices are $30,

$25 seniors, $20 students, $15 children and free for children five and under. The ticket includes entrance to the Jazz Loft museum where several period drum sets from the 1920s-1960s will be on display. Tickets can be purchased at https://www. thejazzloft.org/tickets
