Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day.

My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes.

I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient.

People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”

What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed.

It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing.

Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you.

Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell.

Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.

Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain.

Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players.

Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime.

Go do something you enjoy.

No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour.

Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

Election Day Content Provided By: Suffolk County League Of Women Voters November 6th is Election Day. New Yorkers have an abysmal record of turning out to vote. In the 2016 presidential election, New York ranked 41 out of the 50 states for lowest turnout. In 2014, which was an off year election, similar to this year, New York ranked 49/50, with only one state having lower turnout than us. What will happen this year in New York?

What will happen in Suffolk County? Will you be making your choice known or abdicating your power to others?

Minnesauke Elementary School kindergarten through second-grade students learned important safety lessons during a recent fire prevention program provided by the dedicated members of the Setauket Fire Department.

Throughout the program, volunteers

reinforced the importance of having a predetermined family meeting place, the need to regularly replace smoke detector batteries and the number to call in case of an emergency.

Outside the building, students were able to tour two working fire apparatuses, take an

up-close look at the firefighters’ lifesaving equipment as well as an ambulance and rescue boat. Each student was then provided with a keepsake informational goody bag, which included materials to reinforce the messages that were discussed.

This year we have seen increased polarization and heightened civil discourse throughout the country, in our state and even in our county.

Although all the noise may appear to indicate that most voters are paying attention and interested in politics, this simply may not be the case. Yes, certainly there are more people speaking out. Students in high schools and colleges appear engaged and energized, holding marches and their own voter registration drives. Women as a group are more visible, running for public offices as well as organizing voter registration and voter turnout initiatives.

We have also seen that voter turnout in the primaries this year was much higher than in the 2014 primary. However, in the 2014 general election, only 28 % of new Yorkers voted. How many of the 72% who did not vote, will this year? We hear from those who are engaged, but what about the silent majority? How many are turned off to politics because of the rhetoric? How many feel that there is no way they can make a difference so why bother? How many have become so mistrustful of what they hear and read, that they stop trying to find out about the candidates, their positions, and decide not to vote?

There are many places where voters can go to be informed, hear from candidates themselves, learn about issues from non-partisan organizations. There are voter guides both paper and online. One example is the LWVNY guide, VotingNewYork.org, which will not only let each voter know candidates on their ballot, but also candidate bios, endorsements, and where they stand on important issues. In addition, it will let readers know their poll site and if desired, send a reminder to vote. Many community organizations are hosting candidate debates as well as some media channels. Voters should listen to what the candidates have to say as well as to questions they avoid. If they have been in public office before what they have done can be compared to what they promise they will do. If they would be new to elected office, learn more about their positions and their abilities to communicate with people of all backgrounds and opinions.

On November 6th, each of us will be voting for our member of the House of Representatives and also one US Senator from New York.

We will also be voting for NY Governor, NY Lieutenant Governor, NY Comptroller and NY Attorney General, as well as our NY State Senator and NY State Assembly member. In addition, the Suffolk County Comptroller and Suffolk County Clerk are also on the ballot.

There are also some special elections in several of our towns.

Therefore, this election is important for all levels of our government.

This outcome will affect everyone, those who vote and those who do not. Not voting is not protesting what is going on. It is giving up. It is relinquishing power and abdicating it to others.

You can check your registration and polling place at SuffolkVotes.com or call Suffolk County Board of Elections (BOE) at 631 852-4500 or the NY Board of Elections at 800 367-8683. Know who is on your ballot and which candidates will represent you. If you cannot get to polls on Election Day because you will be out of the county, in a hospital, or have primary care duties and you have applied for an absentee ballot, you can send in your completed ballot, postmarked no later than November 5th, to the Suffolk County BOE. Ballots may also be hand delivered to the Suffolk County BOE or a poll site by 9pm on November 6th. The Suffolk County BOE has extended hours and will be opened Saturday, November 3rd from 9am to 1pm.

Suffolk Land Acquisition On Tuesday, October 2nd, the Suffolk County Legislature voted to approve Procedural Motion 13, which authorizes the County Division of Real Property to make an offer to purchase four parcels of land off of Whiskey Road in Middle Island owned

by Stone Point Group, LLC, for open space acquisition.

Legislator Anker moved forward the acquisition process in an effort to preserve this environmentally sensitive property. The preservation efforts are supported by local community members, environmental groups, and the Middle Island Civic Association. The

parcels will be purchased in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven with the County contributing 70% of the purchase price and the Town contributing 30%.

“I am proud to be part of the Suffolk County Legislature which has taken a strong lead in acquiring and protecting environmentally sensitive properties to protect our natural ecosystems and our vulnerable groundwater aquifer,” stated Legislator Sarah Anker.

The County will now send an offer letter to the owners of the property, who will have 60 days to respond.

If the owner accepts the offer, the County will go

into contract and prepare an Environmental Site Assessment to determine if site remediation must occur before the County can close on the sale. The purchase will undergo a review by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) and an acquisition resolution must then be approved by the Legislature before the County can close on the sale of the property.

Rocky Point Teacher Makes District History

Rocky Point Middle School science teacher Audra Hallock has been selected as a New York State Master Teacher Program, the first in the school district.

The NYS STEM Master Teacher program is a competitive program, and only selects veteran educators who demonstrate a commitment to student achievement, promote STEM inside and outside the classroom, seek out professional development opportunities and work with colleagues to improve STEM instruction. As a STEM Master Teacher, Audra will design, create, facilitate and participate in STEM professional development for the next four years, at Stony Brook University.

“Being selected as a New York State Master Teacher in STEM is truly quite an honor and I am excited to begin working with and learning from other master teachers from the region and state,” said Ms.

Hallock. “Learning truly is a lifelong process and I am eager to continue my own learning at this level and to then be able to bring new ideas and techniques into the classroom.”

There are approximately 980 current STEM Master Teachers statewide, and Audra is one of only 93 STEM Master Teachers on Long Island.

“We are very proud of Ms. Hallock being selected as Rocky Point’s first ever NYS STEM Master Teacher, and are looking forward to her sharing new, meaningful strategies and resources with her colleagues, in support of Rocky Point students,” said Aaron Factor, director of math, science and technology.

Prior to being selected as a STEM Master teacher, Ms. Hallock had to go through an exhaustive application and interview process, including a demonstration lesson. She also shared information about her work with sixth-

grade GATES students and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Through a partnership with BNL, Ms. Hallock has facilitated students’ exploration of plant and animal populations on Rocky Point School grounds.

Specifically, she has helped students examine specific changes to Allegheny Mound Ant populations, and the impact of those changes on surrounding flora.

“Education is the cornerstone to success, and it is the brilliant, dedicated teachers in New York who make a difference in countless lives and inspire the leaders of tomorrow,” Governor C u o m o said. “Congratulations to the 275 newest members of the Master Teacher Program, who will join the ranks of the top educators in the state as they work to further their skills and their impact on students in every corner of this great state.”

Hispanic Heritage Month On October 5th, more than three hundred residents attended the Town of Brookhaven’s Fifth Annual Hispanic Heritage Night Celebration, hosted

by Brookhaven’s Hispanic Advisory Board.

During the annual celebration of Hispanic culture, sixty-four Hispanic/Latino high school seniors from thirteen school districts throughout Brookhaven were honored for achieving a grade point average of 95 or higher.

The Town Board and the Hispanic Advisory Board also honored Suffolk Community

College Associate Dean of Athletics and Special Events, Nefalti Collazo, Town of Southampton Director of Housing and Community Development Diana Dominguez Weir and United States Air Force 1st Lieutenant Genis B. Guzman, who could not attend the event.

These three remarkable individuals have made positive contributions to the Hispanic Community in Brookhaven Town and throughout Long Island.

In 2013, Supervisor Ed Romaine established the first Hispanic Advisory Board in the Town of Brookhaven to

help improve cultural understanding between the Hispanic community, civic and business leaders, Brookhaven government, and Town residents. 15th Annual Monte Carlo Night for the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation’s Resident Assistance Fund, which was established to provide an extra cushion to help cover the monthly fees of residents who have outlived their assets or experience an unanticipated financial need through no fault of their own.

All About Endangered Languages Three Village Central School District’s Ward Melville High School linguistics class took a look into current research on endangered languages in the indigenous areas of South America during a recent guest lecture presentation by Dr. Jose Elias-Ulloa, an associate professor of linguistics at SUNY Stony Brook.

At Le Petit Salon de Musique on Sunday, November 11th, at 2:00 p.m., Welsh-American soprano Rachel Schutz will use her remarkable vocal skills to express the diversity of voices, perspectives, and cultures, represented in the vast repertoire of American vocal music.

Schutz has been hailed for her “diamantine high notes, and giddily delirious coloratura.” She is active both in the opera house and on the concert stage, having sung extensively around the United States, Asia and Europe. Her appearances have included

Carnegie Hall’s Stern, Weill and Zankel Halls; the Ravinia Festival, the Ojai Festival, the Tanglewood Music Center, with the Hawai’i and Riverside Symphony Orchestras; the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series, and the Boston Pops Orchestra.

She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from Stony Brook University, and is member of the voice faculty at Ithaca College.

Rachel will be accompanied by acclaimed pianist Hsin-Chiao Liao.

Change with ‘Ryan’s Story’ Port Jefferson Middle School students were introduced to a powerful speaker who began his presentation by letting them know that the story they would hear would be sad, but his intention was to have them all think and act differently about the issue of bullying. He succeeded.

A voice of hope in the suicide prevention movement, John Halligan who lost his 13-year-old son Ryan to suicide, shared a video montage of his child and spoke of his life

and challenges before his death in 2003.

According to English teacher Allison Giannusa who coordinated the presentation, many of the 6-8 grade students took away several positive messages including optimism, as well as learning from mistakes and, most importantly, that they are loved. As a followup to the presentation, the students reflected on what could have been done differently to prevent Ryan’s death.

In memory of his son,

Halligan spearheaded a bully prevention bill in his home state of Vermont and successfully led the passage of the law pertaining to mandatory suicide prevention education in public schools. He has spoken to thousands of students and continues to advocate for more education and prevention of bullying, cyberbullying and teen suicide throughout the United States, Canada and Latin America.

Stony Brook University Hospital Appoints CMO

Stony Brook University Hospital has appointed Mark Sands, MD, MBA, FACR, as Chief Medical Officer, effective November

Dr. Sands earned his Bachelor of Science and Medical Degrees from Northwestern University, as well as a Masters of Business Administration from Case Western Reserve University-Weatherhead School of Management.

He previously served as the Enterprise Associate Chief Quality Officer for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he was responsible for standardizing high-risk quality clinical operations across 10 Health System

hospitals, 15 Family Health Centers, and eight Ambulatory Surgery Centers. In addition, he is also board certified in Diagnostic Radiology and acted as Vice Chairman of Clinical Operations and Quality of the Cleveland Clinic’s Enterprisewide Imaging Institute (Radiology).

Dr. Sands’ 27-year career in medicine and experience in a variety of leadership positions at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation allows him to

bring a unique perspective on the healthcare landscape to his new role.

As Chief Medical Officer, he will oversee the clinical operation that includes the quality of care and patient safety, coordination of clinical care, development of clinical information systems and physician engagement.
