The talented student-musicians and color guard performed a flawless routine and amazed the many onlookers along the parade route. Urgent Call For Donors New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a sevenday inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now,

reserves are below that minimum.

October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months.

Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower.

Honoring Dedicated Volunteers In celebration of Board Appreciation Week, the Three Village Central School District community came together to honor the volunteers that dedicate countless hours through their service on the board of education.

Representatives from

each of the district’s schools spoke on behalf of their board building liaison, the district clerk and the board’s high school student representative. The speakers shared insight into the individuals’ professional backgrounds, spoke about other ways

the volunteers give back to the community and even imparted a bit of humor into their speeches.

After being recognized, each member was presented with a token of appreciation from the respective schools.

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given.

The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

Free Feral Cat And Pit Bull Spay/ Neuter Program The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center has announced that it is offering a voucher program for free feral cat and pit bull or pit bull mix spay/neuter. Vouchers will be given to residents who live in the Town of Brookhaven and have feral cats or pit bulls that need to be altered.

Surgeries are scheduled by appointment only. For more information, please call the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center at 631451-6950.

Feral Cat Program Vouchers are given to residents who live in the Town of Brookhaven and have feral cats that need to be altered. Two vouchers are issued at a time to each resident. The vouchers are redeemed at the Integrative Veterinary Therapies in Ridge. You must call

the clinic to make an appointment once you have the vouchers. Cats must be brought into the clinic in a trap on the day of surgery.

The cats will be ear tipped and rabies vaccinated at the time of surgery.

Pit Bull / Pit Bull Mix Program The voucher automatically entitles you to one spay or neuter procedure for your Pitbull or Pitbull mix. To ensure the health and wellbeing of your pet and their ability to undergo surgery safely, we request that all dogs over the age of five undergo a free blood work screening at least one week before the scheduled surgical procedure. All surgical candidates five years or older must come to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter on a walk-in basis during our normal business hours

The Rocky Point School District honored retiring employee Mary Leckie at the Oct. 21 board of education meeting.

3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better.

Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer.

5. Manage moisture.

Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections.

The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers.

6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.

Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults.

Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy.

Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage.

Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone.
