chool spirit was on full display at the Port Jefferson School District’s annual Homecoming parade and football game on Saturday, October 18th. Spirit Week kicked off the festivities beginning October 14th, followed by a parade down Barnum Avenue and Main Street on October 18th. The parade featured cheerleaders, junior football players, the middle school band, the Homecoming court and class floats. A great time was had by all!

The Empire State Information Fluency Continuum (IFC) was developed by the New York City School Library System to provide assessment and benchmark skills for grades K-12. School librarians across New York State are utilizing IFC because it empowers students to follow their sense of wonder to learn the way the world works.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Administrative Coordinator for the School Library System (SLS) Gail Barraco invited Mary Zdrojewski, school librarian from Scio CSD, located in Allegany County, NY, to present at a recent school library liaison meeting. She said, “Mary came highly recommended because she is very versed in the Information Fluency Continuum. Instead of getting someone that just talks about the theory, I really wanted

to benchmarking what students want to be. We want them to go into the world using the skills they learned and be digital citizens.”

“I think it’s a really educational event and a nice program they put out for the community,” Setauket resident and first time open house attendee Michale Badillo said.

As residents entered the firehouse, children were greeted with a welcome goodie bag with fire safety reading material and a plastic firefighter helmet

to wear during the event.

Firefighters interacted with community members as they participated in the event festivities and encouraged questions, testing their fire safety knowledge.

“We enjoy running this event every year for the community,” Setauket Fire Department Chief Anthony Todaro said. “We believe continuous reinforcement of fire safety is important for the prevention of fires.”

Mary uses songs, board games, and a variety of other strategies in her school library that create engaging and meaningful learning. At the SLS meetings, attendees played Librarian Bingo and made “Wonder Cans” - a craft project that Mary created. She said, “The Wonder Can is a device I use to spark questions and investigation. Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature.

Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with

record snowfall yet again.

Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end.

Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’.

In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted

house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day.

For now, anyway.

And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax.

Association Wins Grant Family & Children’s Association, one of Long Island’s largest nonprofit human service organizations, has just been awarded a new fiveyear “Solutions To End Homelessness Program” (SEHP) grant totaling $193,934 per year.

Funded by the NY State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, this grant will support Family & Children’s Association’s efforts to provide transitional living services, including housing and independent living skills training, to the approximately 1,500

homeless youth living on Long Island.

Change Makers A small cohort of Rocky Point High School students and staff members worked together build bonds and learn the skills necessary to create a positive environment during this year’s Challenge Day. The powerful, highenergy program engaged more than 100 10th-and 11th-grade students and select staff members in

a series of experiential learning opportunities.

With the help of program facilitators, individuals worked to increase personal power and selfesteem, shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and eliminate the acceptance of teasing and violence.

In the spirit of “pay it forward,” participants were

encouraged to share the knowledge they gained during the workshop and empower their peers and those in the community to stand united and make positive life choices.

This is the third year the school has coordinated the program. Students were selected to participate based on teacher and adult recommendation.

Scholar-Artist Recognition Six talented students from the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) are among the Long Island seniors named 20142015 Scholar-Artists.

Sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Newsday, the ScholarArtist Award honors students for outstanding academic achievement and excellence in the arts. Scholar-Artists are profiled in Newsday and honored at LIAA’s annual gala. They are also eligible for scholarships to several Long Island colleges.

Elena Brosseau, a Film Production student, is a Scholar Artist from the Comsewogue UFSD who credits the school with encouraging her interests in filmmaking skills and for showing her how she can make a career out of it. Elena says, “This award reassures me I’m doing the right thing and that I’m on the right track.”

Alexandra Infranco, a Dance student, is a Scholar

Artist from NorthportEast Northport UFSD is working hard setting goals for herself – she hopes to be a professional dancer on broadway or a choreographer. “This award shows that my hard work is paying off and that I can balance academics and dance,” says Alexandra.

Jacqueline Minogue, a Theatre student, is a Scholar Artist from the Southampton UFSD and credits the school with enhances her performances. “I feel that being able to take musical theatre classes on a daily basis at LIHSA has made me a better performer and more prepared for the future,” says Jacqueline.

Scholar Artists Merit Award: Max Novick a Film Production student from Roslyn UFSD has earned the Scholar Artist Merit Award and plans on attending film school when he graduates. Max says, “My long term goals include writing, directing,

and producing major studio feature films made with an independent integrity and quality.”

Rachel Donders, a Theatre student from Northport-East Northport UFSD has earned the Scholar Artist Merit Award and reflects on her time at LIHSA as giving her the opportunity to grow tremendously as an actress. “LIHSA has not only helped me to grow as an actress, but as a person, The teachers are really supportive and want you to succeed,” says Rachel.

Casey Landman, a Theatre student from Roslyn UFSD has earned the Scholar Artists Merit Award. “I found myself surrounded by the most warm-hearted, openminded people.

Technology Summit More than 700 educators and vendors came together at the 2014 Long Island Technology and Education Summit to learn about the best and most innovative ideas in education technology today. The summit was made possible

by Nassau BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and Eastern Suffolk BOCES, in partnership with lead sponsor Teq. This year’s summit had more than 30

workshops, in which attendees learned how to effectively use emerging technology to enhance the academic experience for students.

Topics included how to “flip” a classroom, enhancing school security through technology, creating a TV studio on a shoestring budget, and using Google apps. During two poster sessions, teachers from local school districts demonstrated web tools,

programming, iMovie for English language learners, and ebooks, just to name a few topics.

The first keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Dede, the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, spoke about “the global knowledgebased economy” and “how we need personalized learning with a skilled person at the heart of it.”

Dr. Dede also discussed a new curriculum research project, EcoMuve, that is expanding the limits of the classroom through the use of 1:1 mobile devices to explore and learn. He went on to say that success in work depends on a person’s interpersonal skills.

Afternoon keynote speaker Bill Daggett, Founder and Chairman of the International Center for Leadership in Education, offered insights

into making students college and career ready.

He explained that data mining and artificial intelligence will become more sophisticated as people’s habits and experiences are monitored by computers.

Two Long Island educators, Christopher J. Pellettieri, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction of the Rockville Centre UFSD, and Alison

Chiquitucto, kindergarten teacher from South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon UFSD, were awarded the 2014 Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation in Technology Award.

The award recognizes excellent work in successfully implementing new technology and strategies in classrooms to help improve student performance.

Distinguished Research Ten Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students were recognized by the Board of Education for research projects they completed during the summer.

Those honored were Caroline Biondo, Ryan Burke, Carly Cherches, Noah Davis, Aliza Doyle, Ju Mi Ha, Dunia Karzai, Julia Kharzeev, Donal McSweeney and Natalia Zaliznyak.

The Port Jefferson students’ projects spanned a variety of scientific

studies.

Biondo, for example, worked with Dr. Heather Lynch in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University to collect data on stone stealing in penguin colonies.

Cherches worked with Aleksev Bolotnikov at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Department of Nonproliferation and National Security to test and fabricate CZT crystals to build detectors that are being used to pick up

gamma radiation sources.

Doyle worked at the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of Dr. Sigrid Veasey on the behavior of mice with certain sleep disorders.

Other research projects included DNA extraction, incremental particle tracking, evaporation of protein drops, mutations contributing to neuropsychiatric disorders and protein crystallography nucleation.

Sundial Dedicated With the help of the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School’s Green Team, the Port Jefferson School District dedicated a sundial in memory of Sheldon Katz, a long-time Port Jefferson resident and the founding member of the Royal Education Foundation, at a ceremony on October 15th in the school’s new courtyard garden.

“My hope and the hope of the board is that the sundial will teach and inform our children for many years, just as Shelly has done,” said Scott Zamek, the chair of the Royal Educational Foundation.

The sundial, which was unveiled during the ceremony, was donated by the Royal Educational Foundation and sits atop a wooden pedestal carved by elementary school art teacher Richard Anderson.

Katz’s wife Audrey pointed out that the sundial is a very fitting tribute, since her husband was an avid sailor.

The courtyard garden, which was in the works for the past two years, is the result of teachers, parents and community members working together. The project began when teachers and Green Team members Kari Costanzo

and Laura Kelly decided to clean up the area, which was rundown with overgrown bushes and tree roots upheaving the sidewalk.

Together, they reached out for help and received donations from Prudential Bank, White’s Nursery, the Peconic Herb Farm, Ace Hardware and Ging’s Nursery. The school district installed new sidewalks, a picnic table and benches, and the Royal Education Foundation donated a water barrel that is being used as a water source for the garden.

Showing Port Pride School spirit was on full display at the Port Jefferson School District’s annual Homecoming parade and football game on Saturday, October 18th.

Spirit Week kicked off the festivities beginning October 14th, followed by a parade down Barnum Avenue and Main Street on October 18th. The parade featured cheerleaders, junior football players, the middle school band,

the homecoming court and class floats designed around the theme of Dr. Seuss’s Oh, The Places You’ll Go. The seniors’ float depicted the Leaning Tower of Pisa; the juniors, a royal paradise; the sophomores, New York City; and the freshmen, an igloo.

During the football game, Port Jefferson shut out Greenport, 19-0. Mike DiCalogero scored a 75-

yard touchdown to give Port Jefferson a 13-point lead with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, and Corey Carnahan followed that up by collecting a sack on fourth down to give possession back to Port Jefferson. Nick Caltagirone had 18 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown, and Garret Hiz ran four times for 29 yards and a touchdown as well.

W.S. Mount Elementary School fourth-grader Ava DellaPietra will soon see her name in lights as she has been cast in the national tour of Irving

Berlin’s White Christmas.

DellaPietra will be appearing as Susan Waverly in the stage adaption of the beloved classic film. In this dramatic role, she will perform a solo song and work with the entire cast to help tell the story of two showbiz buddies putting on a show in a picturesque Vermont inn, and finding their perfect mates in the bargain. The tour will be traveling to Peoria, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Boston and New Haven during the 2014

holiday season.

Performing on the national stage is not something new to DellaPietra, as she traveled to 27 cities in the role of Little Cosette in the 2013 National Tour of Les Miserables.

Unsung Heroes During the Welcome Inn’s 25th anniversary celebration, members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s chamber ensemble performed, paying tribute to 135 active volunteers who’ve given

The Port Jefferson ensemble performed a number of classical pieces at the event, which was held at Lombardi’s on the Sound on October 17th.

As a symbol of their commitment, students and staff members were invited to sign a banner in the days following the program.

Star Students Six Edna Louise Spear Elementary students have been named Star Students in the American Library Association’s yearlong Read Campaign.

Port Jefferson kids chosen this month as Star Students include: Samuel Matvya, kindergarten;

Elizabeth Camp, first grade; Colin Veit, second grade; Julia Perrotta, third grade; Jack Speidell, fourth grade; and Huda Jatoi, fifth grade.

School librarian Selinda Moore said all of the students were chosen for their excellent attitude,

behavior and work ethic in the library. As a reward, the Port Jefferson students have their photos displayed on the bulletin board outside the library along with a summary of their favorite books.

The Annual Golden Gathering allows seniors to meet in one location, have access to a variety of information, programs, and services such as those provided by the ESBOCES students.

Adult Nursing Teacher Catherine McLaughlin said, “My students are participating in this event because I want them to learn the dynamics of hypertension. They can speak to the elderly about how to control hypertension by modifying diets and lifestyles.

Mathematic Scholars The Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY Old Westbury has named Port Jefferson Middle School students Mayu Takeuchi and Peggy Yin as Long Island Scholars of Mathematics.

The title allows them to participate in a free mathematical and science program through the

institute.

Takeuchi and Yin are among 84 students across Long Island to receive the prestigious opportunity this year. To qualify, Takeuchi and Yin competed against 600 top-ranking students.

Acceptance was granted on five criteria: nomination, school transcript, teacher recommendation, a

statement written by the student and a rigorous entrance exam.

Both students will now spend 60 hours in class during the course of 20 Saturday mornings participating in the institute’s program, which covers topics including algebra, geometry, discrete math and number theory.

Uniting Against Bullying R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff joined together to commemorate Unity Day on October 22nd by blanketing the building in a sea of orange – the official color of bullying prevention.

The event, which was hosted by the school’s PBIS committee in conjunction with National Bullying Prevention Month, symbolized the school’s commitment to increase awareness of bullying and to connect the community

together as a school.

During what Murphy called bullying prevention week, the students memorialized how they would end bullying and stand up for kindness on pieces of orange paper, listened to daily announcements on the topic and attended a workshop with renowned speaker Lee Cutler. The completed slips of paper were joined together to create a chain that was displayed outside the school’s library.

During his address, Cutler shared several personal stories and how these life events inspired him to think about the individual he wanted to be.

He challenged the students to think about how they would address similar situations; in particular ones dealing with civil and human rights, as well as moments of peer pressure and personal ethics.

Culter conducted a similar program at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School.

Running In Memory Earl L. Vandermeulen High school senior James Burke, a member of the Port Jefferson track and field and cross-country track teams, finished first in the annual New York City Tunnel To Towers Run on September 28th.

Burke completed the 5K – which spanned from the

Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to Lower Manhattan – with a time of 17:56.5, putting him ahead of all male runners.

The race raised money to construct homes for veterans who are injured in battle. Burke ran in memory of his late uncle, William F. Burke Jr.,

who died while rescuing civilians in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11.

This is not the first time Burke has shown his running strength. He won the Division II state championship in June and is ranked fifth in the nation in the one-mile run.

Wounded Warrior Fundraiser In an effort to give back to the community, the Port Jefferson Middle School Student Council has been busy raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Advisor Allison Giannusa said the students spent the week of October 14th raising money during their

lunch periods. To date, they’ve raised $105 for the organization.

The students got the idea to help Wounded Warrior from the Royals football team, which has been sponsoring the WWP for the past year.

“There are so many good

causes out there, but I felt Wounded Warrior is one that is often overlooked,” said Coach Andrew Cosci, who said the idea to help the WWP came to him after he saw Syosset High School doing a similar project for the organization.

Healthy Eating Day National Eating Healthy Day is Wednesday, November 5th, and the American Heart Association wants people to listen the advice of generations of mothers: Eat your vegetables (and fruit).

Americans typically consume about half their recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables. The American Heart Association recommends eating eight or more fruit and vegetable servings every day. For an average adult consuming 2,000 calories daily, that

for heart disease and stroke are preventable through behaviors like making better food choices, getting regular exercise, keeping a healthy weight and not smoking.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports.

The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million

free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added.

Consumers can get a free

credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com.

The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports.

“Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
