Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 7th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest which will then help supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to the more than 300,000 hungry Long Islanders through its distribution network of 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs on Long Island.

First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life.

The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people

have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live.

I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died.

But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence.

I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense.

Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

Finned Wit & Wisdom By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude.

I suppose this means my dinner will be late too.

What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again.

Speaking of which, these

late-night feedings have to stop. Back and forth, I swim my laps, anxiously waiting for my Human to arrive.

Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see?

I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late.

I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied.

I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity.

As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will

greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between.

From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around.

Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins.

Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August.

Scraggy Chefs To enhance students’ reading experience, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School librarian Selinda Moore has whipped up a new reading incentive program called, Scraggy Chefs.

Through the program, Port Jefferson students are motivated to borrow cookbooks and, with

the help of their family, create the dishes they’ve read. Students have made everything from cupcakes and pizza to more exotic dishes such as sushi.

Students are encouraged to celebrate their culinary successes by submitting photos of their dishes to be prominently displayed in the school library.

“This program boosts students’ reading skills and also hones in on other interdisciplinary skills, including math and science,” said Ms. Moore.

“Students are learning to follow directions, about the importance of sequencing and strengthening their fine motor skills.”

Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of approximately 23,000 turkeys and more than 74,000 pounds of food, which were then provided to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays.

Mercy Center held its fifth annual run/walk over the bridge for homeless teens at Smith Point Park on Saturday, October 17th.

Participants from all over the Island came out to support the cause and enjoy the beautiful and unique 3.1 mile course over the bridge. The most senior runner was 79 and the youngest was 6; both belong to the running club North Country Road Warriors. They were among 20 other club members who came this year to run and walk the event.

The Warriors, who hail from the north fork between Port Jeff and Wading River, travel everywhere for great races and support this event wholeheartedly each year.

Sponsorships of all levels for the race made the day possible. EW Howell Construction Co. takes the top sponsor spot every year and encourages partners and affiliates to join in support, resulting in the events costs being fully covered.

Chainsaw Carving The sounds of a chainsaw echoed through the Edna Louise Elementary School playground on October 7th as Port Jefferson art teacher Richard Anderson transformed a piece of wood into a work of art as his students watched with awe behind a safety

perimeter.

Throughout the demonstration, Mr. Anderson, who has been chainsaw carving since the age of 7 and professionally for the past 22 years, explained to students that art comes in many forms.

He further enlightened

students about artistic concepts including texture, form, shape and color. He additionally showed students how art can tell a story, as he created a variety of images, including an eagle, a bear and owl.

Runners Excel The Earl L. Vandermeulen varsity cross-country team had a great run at the Disney Cross-Country Classic, held on October 9th in Disney World.

During the competition, Port Jefferson’s Justin Julich took first place

overall in the Peter Pan Division, a varsity boys 5K race that featured 187 national runners. Julich, a senior, finished with a time of 16:24.60.

Julich’s win, along with teammate Sam Walker placing third and Alex Rebec placing in the top

25, put the Port Jefferson team in 3rd place in the Peter Pan Division.

“This team truly achieved greatness. We are very proud of them,” said Port Jefferson’s Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Debra Ferry.

Across the Port Jefferson School District, students are doing their part to help raise awareness and funds for John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s breast cancer outreach project, called, “Paint Port Pink.”

Throughout the month of October, students are building on the outreach campaign by raising awareness within their respective schools through fundraising efforts.

At the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, students are collecting

monetary donations in a large hourglass; Port Jefferson Middle School student council members are selling pink shoelaces and Frisbees; and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s varsity cheerleaders and student organization members are participating in a pink flamingo “flocking” fundraiser.

The flamingo fundraiser raises money as community members provide a monetary donation to have the cheerleaders place

a flock of pink, plastic flamingos in a neighbor’s yard.

“Through their participation in this community event, our students are being exposed to valuable lessons in community service and character education, as well as learn the importance of giving back,” noted Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Debra Ferry, who helped organize the district’s participation.

Taste of the Season Arrowhead Elementary School kindergarten students celebrated the fall harvest during an interactive and educational Oktoberfest.

The event featured a number of workstations, each of which had a curriculum component connected to the activity.

During the apple tasting and apple graphing

sections, they used their five senses to identify which type was their favorite and charted their responses on large paper.

They found star patterns in an apple stamping section and worked on artistic skills during a leaf rubbing activity.

Mathematics skills were utilized as the students worked to estimate the

Cooperative learning skills were fostered as each class created a scarecrow to put on display their in the classroom.

As a follow up, the students completed writing activities on the types of apples their preferred the next day within their classrooms.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Parris Garant has been named as a Scholar Artist by the Long Island Alliance of the Arts for her vocal talents.

To earn the title, which is bestowed annually to just

21 students across Long Island, the Port Jefferson native participated in a highly competitive selection process.

As part of that process, she was required to submit a video of herself singing in

Rocky Point School District students and staff have been working to raise funds and awareness to support breast cancer initiatives through several creative and longstanding events.

This year’s 12th annual “Pack the “Track” event brought together hundreds of students, faculty and

In addition to singing, Garant is also a violinist and sits second chair in the school’s orchestra. She is also the vice president of her school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Finalists Mentored Seventeen high school students mentored by faculty at Stony Brook University have been selected as regional finalists in the 2015 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology – one of the top nationwide research competitions for high school researchers. Stony Brook University mentored a total of 51 semifinalists in the competition, marking a University record. The results rank the University among the institutional leaders who mentor high school researchers from Long Island and around the country.

The regional finalists, selected from the group of 466 national semifinalists, will advance to one of six regional competitions held over three consecutive weekends in November. Winners of the regional events will then advance to the National Finals held at George Washington University in December where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top awards of $100,000. Thirty-one of the 51 students mentored at Stony Brook participated in the Garcia Program, which is directed by Miriam Rafailovich, PhD, a Professor in the Department of Material Sciences & Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
